I've done some lengthy tests on OM-1's A.I. Subject tracking and it's birds and animal tracking is much improved than E-M1X, but just how much better? Find out in this video. #animaltracking #microfourthirds #photography

Thanks for this video! I agree with you on E-MX1's behavior on bird tracking! At the beginning I could not use it so well since my response speed was faster than E-M1X and ended up lost focus so many times! Plus as you said, it is not possible to choose target with nipple. But just after it was announced one of Japanese bird photographer mentioned that "can do that".... I'm looking forward to compare myself the difference soon, I hope.

It is worth mentioning the improved user interface for subject tracking. Subject tracking is engaged with C-AF or C-AF+TRK, and can be controlled via function button (toggled on/off and selected using control dial). With the E-M1X, it took a menu dive to turn it on/off, so I used to just leave it on and set up C-AF or C-AF+TRK to switch between them. With the OM-1, I can set up two different C-AF modes with different AF Target Areas, and toggle subject tracking on/off, making it easy to switch AF target area while using subject tracking or switch subject tracking off if it gets confused. This is a very good thing. I do want to add, however, that the OM-1 lost a very useful feature. With the E-M1s, you could specify AF Mode in the Home Position settings. I would specify S-AF as AF-Mode and single point as AF Target Area, and leave AF Target Position unchecked (this is important), and I would set the joystick center button to the Home Position function. This way, with the function lever in either position (set to C-AF), I could use the joystick center button to toggle to S-AF and back to C-AF. The OM-1 does not allow AF Mode to be set in Home Position, and doesn't toggle back to the previous AF settings with the Home Position function (it sets it, and leaves it). I think this is a very bad thing. Especially the fact that you can't get back to the original AF Target Area, but also the loss of that third AF setting is a move backwards. I've contacted OMDS about it. If anyone else would weigh in on this with them, it might help convince them to fix it (i.e. just make it work like it did with the E-M1s).

It's 2023 now, I am still on an E-M1III. I am still leaning towards the E-M1X to add to my setup instead of the OM1. Here's why: 1. It's less than USD1,000 "like new" on MPB. That's half the price of the OM-1. 2. It comes with a grip. The OM1 battery grip is considerably more expensive than the optional E-M1III grip which I cannot reuse on the OM1. 3. I can leverage the same batteries I already have for the E-M1III. 4. I don't have to learn two different menu systems when using my E-M1III and an E-M1X. If I added the OM-1, I'd have to deal with two different menus. 5. The body ergonomics of the E-M1III and E-M1X are MUCH better than the re-designed OM1 with its new wheel placement (WTF?!) and the smaller buttons (again, WTF). 6. The subject detect auto-focus is probably good enough - or not USD1,000 worse than the OM1. Same for noise/dynamic range. It's not a big deal.
@NO3V

Looks like the OM-1 highlights the fronts of the cars and focuses on those. There might be situations where (the depth of field is shallow enough and) I'd want the driver in focus, but typically I think the front of the car is more relevant and the better choice - an option would be even better still obviously.

I am really interested in your journey with the menu system. I have owned a long list of Olympus digital cameras, but never felt like I "got used to" the menus. I still struggle sometimes to find something in the menus. Having said that I'm not looking forward to starting from scratch...again. Is it possible to save the settings from an M1.3 and load them into the OM-1? I'm guessing that would be too much to ask. Failing that, could you make a list of the items you would change on your new OM-1 right out of the box? I have such a list for my M1's as each model has slightly different menus and I can't copy/paste the settings. So first day with a new Olympus is dedicated to getting the basic menu setup the way I like it. The next step is to setup the custom menus 1-4. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. FYI, I don't do video. Stills only. If that matters.

I agree. The E-M1X was promoted as the 'Flagship' and touted for Subject Tracking AI. It would be a real shame if nothing is done in the future to improve that -- even if it is not quite at the level of the OM-1. I bought my E-M1X about 4 months ago, and love it, but the Bird AF needs improvement -- that said, I am not about to sell it already and move to the OM-1, so I sure hope OM Systems will choose to do a good firmware upgrade.
@lens.eye.
@lens.eye. 2 года назад
@@gregm6894 Hate to disappoint, however, it is very big chance that no update will happen to previous models (other than support of new lenses). PS. What we see now in OM-1 is very big step forward, and it is something what was planned (due to number of rumors) in E-M1X firmware update year ago but from marketing prospective (to give OM-1 its market without competition with E-M1X) they apparently decided do not improve (X/III) anymore.

At the moment, Bird af only works with caf with tracking for EM1X which works well for a perched bird but BIF it is a bit too slow. Just took my OM-1 for birding today and the bird af is so much better. I got shots that were possible with the EM1X, the af acquisition is so quick as long as the birds are in the frame, they will focus instantly where as with the EM1X, it takes like half of a second before the camera can start tracking and by then, the birds might be gone. I got so many more good shots today .

I have the exact opposite issue with the EM1X bird tracking. It can't focus on a bird perching at all (even a single bird by itself), but for BIF it does great!

I know that a lot of people think this doesn't matter that much, and in many ways I agree, but I would still like to see a 43 megapixel om systems camera. I am very happy with my 20 megapixel E-M1 iii, but if an OM-1X (E-M1X ii) came out with 40+ megapixel, I would be willing to spend $3000+ for it. That being said, I think this is where OM needs to go. If they want to become one of the most sought after nature wildlife cameras, they will do 3 things to compete with Sony/Canon/Nikon: 1) Keep the similar performance to OM-1 (maybe 24 frames per second would suffice), 2) bump the megapixels to compete with the R5, and 3) keep putting an emphasis on improving video features. Look, I am extremely happy with what I have, but I want my investment to keep winning financially, and imagine how many people would prefer the lightweight portability of micro 4/3, but the detail and flexibility of having larger files for cropping, and higher res video and/or more video fidelity: i think this is the winning formula for OM, and micro 4/3 as a whole

I don't use bird tracking anyway. Works for large birds such as eagles and herons, but for small birds is not recommended at close range. The middle range is OK and the bird should not be too fast. I found that for fast-moving small birds, which is a challenge for any camera, continuous AF works better than tracking in the E-M1X. As tracking, I do it much more successfully than the camera itself. In 90% of cases, the camera does a good job. For still objects, any camera can do the job. I own almost all camera models and the Olympus is the camera I use all the time. I am extremely pleased with the E-M1X. I'm glad you're happy with the OM-1 as well. Good luck!

Yep, can see OM1 is better in the genres you discuss, but birds and moving cars not really my thing, epic landscape, street, macro and of course birds in the bedroom, so not actually seeing much to tempt me with the new system.

Sadly, this camera changes nothing. m4/3 system's main problem was never subject tracking or AF accuracy. The real problem is, that the big companies went mirrorless and started making cameras and lenses that are smaller, cheaper, more capable and modern than the DSLR models. From there, m4/3 lost its main advantages - size, price and mirrorless functionality like IBIS, EVF and silent shooting. And now, the differences with the mirrorless Canon, Sony, Nikon or Fuji are things like level of detail, low light performance and DR in which departments the m4/3 cannot compete because of the smaller sensor. Maybe the GH6 model has its place, because video works with slightly different rules, but a photo-centric flagship model with m4/3 sensor is a no-go imo.
