Om Shanti Om was THE representation and a satirical take on Bollywood and one of the biggest blockbusters of all time. Farah Khan knows how to make good commercial films and in my opinion her way of presenting SRK on screen in unbeatable. Miss those days when SRK used to just come casually and break all records
I think you might have missed it, Jaby. The phobia of fire of the later character of Shahrukh khan was carried from his previous life where both Om and Shanti died in fire. However, towards the end, it is evident that he overcomes this fear when he turns the fire on his forearm out by his other hand.
Achara cried at 'Om Shanti Om'! Try 'Kal Ho Na Ho' and then we can get into a long discussion about the tear inducing power of Shah Rukh Khan 😂 About the change we witness in Om - it's not just about all the memories coming back to him but is also an acknowledgement of the privilege he got by just being born as the son of a huge film star. There is a very subtle discussion going on about nepotism, a rampant phenomenon in the film industry, right before the 'Om Shanti Om' song. I think by working doubly hard as an actor, Om is justifying all the benefits he received. With all the debate around nepotism that took place recently, this is actually a really good message.
Chak de india is the movie for you jaby. Which i am sure you will 'love' Following every review of yours.... i have grasped the qualities you search in a movie. And definitely Chak de india will be one of those films which will ..tick mark..all those qualities for sure.
I like how you're able to pick out the things that are well done, even if the plot isn't always what you enjoy! That being said, Main Hoon Na (2004) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) were the kind of movies that made SRK the 'king of romance' lol...Achara would love these 2 movies!! Please give them a chance lol
Achara you're wrong this time - SRK always comes out on his balcony.... Wave his hand, say a few words to the people gathered there on his every birthday!! It will be very amazing for you to know that hundreds of people gather in just few hours!!
Really appreciate you doing more movie reviews now. It shows listening to your audience and that's an important trait for an artist. However, Om Shanti Om is a dubious choice. Even for Farah Khan, Main Hoon Na would have been a far better choice. Om Shanti Om for even an Indian viewer who gets all the references was average at best. In any case, good that you watched it. And your review of 'liked it, not loved it' is pretty accurate. Achara calling out Shreyas Talpade's performance shows her keen observation, as he is indeed a brilliant actor. Enjoyed the review you guys.
These comments are 5 years old. But I love this movie a lot being a South indian I'm a fan of shahrukh movies his movies has comedy , dance nos. This movie is the best. In every scene we can see Shahrukh acting skills melodramatic who cares it made me cry. I love this movie.... My favourite movie
SRK can play any role beautifuly. He did it melodramatic even when he was supposed to be serious because thats the film. If you want seriousness in him watch swades and chalk de india, great movies and not an inche of melodrama. Anyway i think the indian audience like to see him a certain way and thats why he did many melodramtic movies.
Yes Jaby Yes! You are absolutely right! That fight sequence to impress deepika was in reference to overly dramatic south Indian Movie action scenes! They are over the top sometimes but absolutely fun!
It was not just the memory that made him be more humble and hardworking but also that he remembered how he strugled to become a star. He understood he is a star now somewhere because of his dad and he is taking everything for granted in his life.
You hit the nail on the head, Jaby, the whole premise of the film was supposed to be a caricature of yesteryear Bollywood. And the fake fighting sequence was indeed a throwback to hammy B-grade action films of the South, from the 60s-70s. Think Zoolander-esque satire. :)
Well..If you are going to watch Munna Bhai MBBS next, I am not sure whether you will get the feel of the movie. Bcoz Munna Bhai movie is well known for the use of "tapori" language and most of the comedy in the film depends on that language. I am not sure if you guys will b able to catch that feel simply by reading the subtitles.
It's great that you have such a diverse taste in movies that you could actually enjoy something like I'm Shanthi Om. One major reference you missed is that the song that they show Shanti dancing with different stars of Hindi cinema from the 60s and 70s. The footage of the male actors are real, and they graphically inserted deepika's footage into that. So much effort! When we would have easily bought any unknown actor made to pretend like those older movie stars
Yes,You are right at 04:30.They are making fun of South Indian action scenes.Actually after that (after 2008) Bollywood also started doing/copying those kind of movies with over the top action sequences, many of them starred Salman Khan(Dangal,Bodyguard,Wanted,Ready etc.)
Shubham Meena how about when u copy bollywood 👉👉jabardasht remake of band baaja barat, green signal remake of pyaar ka punchnama, gabbar singh remake of dabbang, gopala gopala remake of omg oh my god, masala remake bol bacchan, satai remake of delhi belly, garganai remake of, nh10, manithan remake of joll llb, queen remake, aegan remake of main hoona, anamika remake of kahaani, vasool raja remake of muna bhai ask me if u want more movies 😛😛😛

CHETHAN NAYAK lol u consider rab be Bana do Jodi as one of best and at no 2 haha that's funny maybe u don't know all Shahrukh khan movies rab ne Bana di Jodi 😂
PLEASE WATCH DIL SE. It is one of the best works of Shahrukh Khan directed by Mani Ratnam. The music is really great as it is done by Mr. A.R Rahman. :)
After he finishes watching all our trashy films starting Salman khan,Ajay devgan,SRK or anything that has Nawazuddin.Somehow he wants to stay away from our musicals. He is prejudiced against watching them and so is missing out on great stuff.I really want to him to open up a bit to the earlier 2000 Bollywood films ..which define our Indianess
Om shanti om is inspired by Karz which in turn was based on the old black n white film Madhumati. All 3 filmz are entertaining n music is great in all of them.
You are spot on Jaby. The movie is satire on whole indian movie industry. From start to end, director Farah Khan has made fun of indian stereotype. This is one of the best last "Bollywood" movie made.
Asoka , Dil SE , devdas ,Swades , Chak de India and my name is Khan are all incredible movies and very different characters he has played they show how versatile and great actor he is.....PLEASEEE watch these movies u will fall in love with him
talking about SOUTH FILMS I RECOMMEND YOU TO WATCH "ARJUN REDDY" and TALK SOMETHING ABOUT REALITY BRO. Thanks guys for watching and reviewing this movie...great movie and amazing acting by all... Anyways This is my favourite movie... because of Deepika...I fell in love with her watching this movie ...she just stuck in my head...I dreamt her...🙄.few years later I saw someone tall slim... big eyes ...dimples...she looks like deepika 😍 .... instantly my heart gone out of control....Now she is my gf...hope soon we will marry......
I watched Om Shanti Om the first time when I was so cynical about life so when the story took to the reincarnation part I was like Wtf? But I love it after second viewing. And the award section is the best. So funny!
@jabykoay the movie was essentially an homage to the movie Karz which was a loose remake of the Hollywood movie : The incarnation of Peter Proud which in turn can be said as a remake of the Indian classic movie released way back in 1957 - Madhumati. As you mentioned, it was supposed to be a over the top homage to those melodramatic bollywoodish movies which most of the Indian population enjoy.
Sunil Kumar Malali hahaha😂😂😂😂 Lagta hain ulta paida huaa tha tu Tabhi bhool bhulaiya tujhe boring lagi thi. Thoda detail me likh de bhai dakshin bharat ke ho so hindi movie ghatiya hi lagegi naa.
Hey Jaby, so I was rewatching the series, 'Permanent Roommates', and I really liked that background music you put on the S2E05 video at 24:47. Can you please share the name of the music?
jaby koay thanks man! I don't understand the hate. Seeing the comments, it's not directed torwards a specific area. Bro, you do you; majority of us like your content and that's what matters. I am a Pakistani fan, just letting you know. But I live in scotland.
You are 100% correct about that action sequence, Jaby. It is trying to make fun of south Indian movies. To answer your question about why did Om change later on and started to take acting seriously. It's because he remembered his previous life and remembered everything that he went through, including his struggle as a junior artist. His dream was to get a main role in a movie, he wanted to do more than just being a junior artist. He remembered all that and realized that now that he has everything he wished for in his previous life, he is taking it all for granted. That is why he changed. I hope this reaches you and helps you understand.
please please watch swadesh. This is greatest movie of. srk so far . he did make many masterpiece movie but this one is totally realistic and heart touching.
Almost everything in the movie is a hat tip to Older Bollywood--the characters, the relationships, even the plot lines. The friend and mom were references to the stock character of the loyal friend and melodramatic but loving mother, the reincarnation plotline was a reference to Karz, one of the biggest Bollywood movies ever (and quintessentially Bollywood), while the last bit with the ghosts was a reference to Madhumati.
The concept of reincarnation is rooted in our Holy Scriptures called Mahabharata where Lord Krishna says soul changes body like we change clothes but we don't remember this thing.
In reference to your statement about suspecting that deepikas actual ghost was still being around there is a scene during the song dastaan-e where they first tried to trick mukeesh with the fake deepika (but she started bleeding) where they showed the real ghost of deepika in the background which you could tell by her different clothes you should check it out
actually fan base of srk some time back was like for best actor everyone used to scream srk, and his every movie used to be nominated although all of them different genre and acting level
Dear Jaby and my Bae Achara, if you want to see where the word melodrama was originated, you have to watch Kabhi Khushi kabhi gham. That is the mother of all the melodramatic movies. Plus, most of the things you've seen has Kabhi Khushi kabhi gham references, so just watch it and get it over with
Yes! They were making fun of south indian action sequences 😂 Oh! And yes! He was making fun of himself, and certain, very obvious flaws in Indian cinema... Good job bro 👌🏼
@Jaby.. What i understand from why he went back to the old self is the memories of how much he worked hard to become an actor and when he got the opportunity in the reincarnated life, he just took it for granted. And it just made him feel guilty.
He was humbled by his past life story and realised it is not his talent that made him the star but him being born in a star family. Also he never made so much effort or put his heart and soul on anything and when he found his one life goal to take revenge against a murderer, deepika's inability to perform the way he wanted made him over dramatic. I agree that SRK did make the movie enjoyable through his performance and it is understandable that acting in a movie where the tone goes from melodrama to comedy is immensely difficult but still it was enjoyable performance
Thank you for the review. This movie makes me cry every single time I watch it. 😭 As for your one comment. I dont think its a problem when you use American culture and Hollywood as a point of reference. Its probably not good to assume Hollywood or US culture influences Indian cinema and culture.
im so impressed how well acquainted you have become with indian culture jaby! Talking about the south indian reference! You have truly become an Indian now!
Ha ha. After 3 years. This movie has lot of references to the early 1960s movie, the STARS (KAPOOR references), movie industry in that exactly, etc etc. .eg the Fire scenes was one of the famous incident happened on the sets of MOTHER INDIA (sunil dutt father of sanjay dutt marries nargis after saving her from the incident). So in general this movie had lots of throwbacks. And yeah full of melodrama but somehow manages to keep you engrossed with the characters and stuff.
Actually i dont think they were teasing south india. I think it was a reference to a character from Channels in 1994 or 1998 Murugan. Eventually a Movie itself was made after the release of OM SANTI OM. Named " Quick Gun Murugan" by fox star studios and its in English. @jaby koay
