They're doing the same thing as Pentax: sticking to their lane, and not moving for anyone. If you need their cameras, you'll buy one, if you don't, then you won't.
@@patrickmeyer2802 uh, Petax comparison is kinda off IMO. Olympus cameras are more cutting edge than Pentax cameras. Maybe they changed only small bits with the new camera. But many of the small bits that sum up. Other than Panasonic or instance, they also have PDAF. The only issue is how much disrespect small sensor cameras have. Them not having that "professional look" with the soft creamy bokeh.
I feel this is the perfect camera for 1. wildlife & Sports shooters with that explosive FPS rate and improved C AF. 2. Landscape photographers with it's Live ND, Handheld high res mode. 3. PhotoJournalists. 4. And yeaahh it can do as an event camera as well. It is a fine product with a solid evolution over em1 mk 3
@@huetuber1204 I've been a serious landscape photographer for more than 20 years and have used FF and M43, i take my EM-1 MK III with me when i'm climbing mountains or going on long treks. In all honesty, i've had great results with the EM-1, just as good if not better than FF. I take it your comment was flippant and that you've never actually tried a M43 Camera ?
As is always the case with you guys, you cover the highlights and do it in half the time and with less BS than all the other review sites. You're the best of the best. Oh, and the camera looks pretty decent, too.
Always excellent unbiased reviews, you guys are the best. Many micro 4/3 shooters have both OM Systems and Panasonic, I don't expect that to change. It's a great partnership that helps both companies and gives it's customers more options and flexability.
@@Povilaswildlife Yes, they both use Micro Four Thirds lenses. Only minor incompatibilities, like lens stabilization won't work with the IBIS of the other camera brand.
@@Povilaswildlife I’ve been using Panasonic bodies for my work for years love them. My 2.8 zoom lenses are all Olympus they basically work as native lenses. The Olympus 12-40mm 2.8 is a must for any m43 shooter. As a generally rule Panasonic lenses tend to be more clinically sharp while Olympus lenses render bokeh much better (this is a generalization)
The camera is a fair upgrade of the EM1iii and a good first move from OMDS. But what really excites me is the new 40-150 f4 tele lens. That's much more important to me as a landscaper (although the new sensor is good as is the 6 stop ND feature) But the new lenses have received virtually no press! So I was really glad to see you had a few sample shots using it in your review. Thanks for that.
The EM5 Mark III is a great video camera, especially if you like 24 frames per second. This camera offers cine 4k 24p at 240mbs with great stabilization and autofocus and just 400 grams. Its a mini cinema camera.
Great Job guys!! Having a look to its specs, I can also see unlimited video time recording , CK 60P RAW codec 4:4:4 Raw 12 bits for external video recordings. Also the Quad Pixel Bayer pattern sensor technology which is quite unique in the market. I really think this time OM System has made not only in terms of Photo specs, improving on 2 steps the noise/Iso ratio but mainly in video. Basically it is clear now that Olympus or OM SYSTEM is more than suitable for the big majority of photographers since it has improved quite a lot its quality, still keeping the unique portability and price advantage. 2.2K US$ for such a body isn't that expensive when compared to other similar and more "famous" cameras.
You guys have an amazing channel! My favorite of all of them. How are earth do you only have 340k subs and Others ( no names) have 1-2 million. Yours is actually a real review channel.
My favorite part of this review starts with Chris's gripe when focusing on a woodpecker. 😆At 9:07. People! We are so spoiled, it's insane. I get that Chris has to point out flaws but, in the history of camera manufacturing, we are damn lucky to have gotten to this point.
First, I always appreciate Chris and Jordan's reviews, honesty and guidance. Everyone talks (complains) about the small 20 MP sensor. It's my understanding that they really can't make bigger sensors for Micro 4/3 cameras without also redesigning all the lenses. The news sensor on this looks like it will improve a lot of the "limitations" of 4/3 such as low-light shooting and noise reduction. This is a monumental upgrade from my original OMD EM1, and I'll almost certainly stick with quirky Olympus/OM cameras.
Thank you. Your Insights may help some of us who are ‘Olympus fans’ in the Far East as OM systems seem to only want to concentrate on the West for it’s products. This is what we gather from all the review videos …. Who they were reviewed by!! A change in strategy from Olympus which wanted a worldwide market.
As someone embedded in m43, I’m excited that the ruggedness of their cameras are still top tier. I feel like the full frame options are getting close though but the reliability still hasn’t failed me.
"I feel like the full frame options are getting close"... m43 systems are worse in nearly every way than full frame, and FF systems are cheap now, it's time to move on.
@@welfarestates8465 I don't understand why people should move on if they are pretty happy with what they have. I have both full frame and apsc and, to be honest, I enjoy much more my apsc experience. The rest is just trash talking and fanboysm. Period
@@welfarestates8465 I'm pretty sure he's referring to weather sealing and/or general durability, not image quality. That said, I'm still not sure he's correct. Canon and Nikon halo bodies are built like tanks, and I doubt even the E-MX matches them. Below the ~6K USD bodies? I'm not sure about either the D850 or 5DIV, but I suspect they're as well built as the top m43 bodies. Given their size, they're probably not going to feel as dense as an E-M1IV or Fujifilm XT-4, but that's not a build quality indictment. Eh, I have no idea whether crop bodies are more durable etc., but I do love that spending a grand almost guaranties exceptional build quality.
@@theoldhenk7531 See I've heard of canons and nikons and Sony cameras failing for various reasons. Not often, but it happens. I've literally never heard of a top end panasonic or Olympus failing. They just don't break. I personally dropped my em5 2 with a non weather sealed lens into the ocean. Took me an hour of diving before I was able to locate it. Didn't even have to do anything special. I just dried the camera out and it worked fine. The lens was a manual lens so I had to drain it and get it regreased, but it was fine ultimately too.
I am SOOO getting this :) Still have an EM1 mk2 and skipped the 3. This is everything I could have asked for. (24MP would have been nice, but I prefer selective Hi-Res over permanent MP bump and I'm happy with the prints I've gotten off the mk2.) Only bummer is that I need new batteries :)
As far as I read, the OM-1 can still use BLH-1 batteries. The BLX-1 just has about 20% more juice in it :) Edit: apparently that information was wrong, the batteries are different and not compatible
@@olyb3693 hmm, I read that in one review but now I can't find it again. Maybe it was removed because it was wrong/unclear. The official announcement doesn't say anything regarding compatibility. So I guess we need to wait a bit more to see if that is actually true or not.
Just watched an intro video from OM Systems. The OM-1 uses a new battery that does not fit the E-M1 series and those batteries will not work in th OM-1. Also, the OM-1 does not come with a battery charger but comes with a cable for in camera charging. A dual battery charger is an extra.
They could also add a button "Change setting" to the error window so that you could jump directly to the offending setting and change it fixing the error in a few clicks :)
damn, you captured a Saw-Whet Owl! Here in Vancouver/Lower Mainland BC, any sightings of a Saw-Whet, that place would be bombarded by birding photogs lol
Great video, you guys really do a wonderful job, thanks much. Looking forward to the full review. This may very well be my next camera purchase for use here in Alaska.
This pretty much looks like my perfect camera system! I've been a Sony shooter for years now and I've always wanted better ibis and weather-sealing. Plus, full-frame lenses are just so big and expensive, it takes a lot of the joy out of photography for me. I do love the quality coming out of my Sony A7C but I honestly had more fun with the A6000 and tiny 16-50 kit lens. Being able to get this camera body with the two new lenses as a complete kit for all of my travel and adventures is extremely enticing! Under $4k, covers the 24-300 range at f/4 or better, very compact and light, sounds amazing! I'm perfectly happy with 20MP and the accompanying smaller file sizes. I really don't need better image quality, I need to get better at photography! Curious how well the eye AF works in video mode and I hope this camera has an interval timer/self-portrait mode built in. Hopefully this puts the pressure on other manufacturers to release an adventure line of cameras, like an AX line for Sony.
f4 in mft is f8 in full frame equiv though and f2.8 is f5.6 equivalent so literally zero bokeh and a lot less light to work with I would personally wait rumor has it this is the year that sony brings the apsc beast out i mean you do you but that is a lot of money for MFT and you might regret it if sony steps up . have a good one
@@Crushonius Not much difference between MFT and APS-C in terms of light gathering (only a bit more than half a stop), and the lenses are better with MFT, so you won't do much better in terms of light gathering and depth-of-field. It's wrong to say 'zero bokeh' as well - you can blur backgrounds quite nicely with the little f/1.8 primes.
@@Crushonius thanks for your input. I would LOVE to see Sony unleash an apsc monster! Hopefully with excellent weather sealing. I’m always out climbing/hiking and I’ve been missing my apsc kit and just really wanting a smaller/lighter setup. I’m starting to think that what I really want is to keep my FF kit for professional work and get an rx100 or similar for personal and daily use. But I’m all set for now! Excited to see what new tech will be unveiled this year. Cheers
Thanks Chris, Thanks Jordan. I appreciate all the information on this "review" with lots of information in a very quick and compact method. Although this review was done on a pre-production camera, you sure fed me lots of terrific information. This is my 1st "Olympus" camera, in M4/3rds. I've been a Panasonic Lumix M4/3rds photographer, with my last favorite cameras being the G9, GH-5 and for street photographjy the GX-9. I have yet to really learn this camera. I'll have lots of work ahead of me learning the menus, and setting it up, Thanks for your help in this review. Please keep them coming. 😎⭐📸👌👀👍
Guess whos video on this camera I was waiting to watch first? This one 😎. You guys rock! They need to up the MP on the sensor though, a little bit more would be great.
Thanks for the great review of the new OM-1's Photo ability Guys. I hope Jordan tests its video capability in 4K/30P and use the HEVC H.265 format to see how that streaming compression works for RU-vid. Seems that will be more fitting for a Hybird mirrorless shooter seeking to shoot smooth fast action digital 4K video content. Shooting film style and 24p is great for film, but for a overall general purpose photo/hybrid in the digital age, the higher framerates are becomming the trend for the slow motion, and other digital camera movement techniques. Nevertheless, the OM-1 will sell and is already highly anticipated by Olympus phototgraphers. Look forward to the video review of the OM-1. Thanks.
Thank you for the informative video guys, truly appreciate it! I have a feeling this camera will improve even more with firmware just like with the EM1.2. The only thing I was hoping for was an astro tracking feature similar to the one in Pentax cameras, if I recall correctly Olympus did have a patent for a similar feature, and it would have been awesome to have it for astro photography (since the leaks did mention astro tracking I allowed myself to get my hopes up). OM1 looks solid, and the improved video recording options is also a big welcome. I can't wait to buy one when it becomes available.
Good review! I’m still using the original 0MD-EM1 from 2014. The 3 subsequent models were never that big of an upgrade for my use. But this one might finally pry my wallet open. I’m headed to NYC in May hopefully the new OM1 will be available by then
Interesting that they switched back to the smaller size after the E-M1X. Though I guess people can get a grip when they want it. Nice job on the video as usual!
The video I have been waiting for. I think it is time to sell my EM-1 III and get this beauty. Oh 60fps in 4k was the cherry on top. Also how is that even possible at 1:38???
Looks like a very handy travel/documentary camera, especially with the video improvements, battery and processor boost. It always had great IBIS, Olympus Colour is the most natural I've ever seen out of camera, and Phase Detect AF gives it a spec advantage over DFDS, unless the GH6 has something new... Many thx for this. I'm looking forward to the Full Review.
I shoot professionally with Sony full frame, But I'm definitely going to pickup one of these for travel, really bad weather, and the cool computational stuff that the Big 3 are still neglecting.. the 100+ fps burst would be perfect for baseball shooters getting that ball on the bat without using my a9 or a1. I like sone of the in camera hand-held stuff
Very good camera review. I just got the OM 1 Mark iii 5 months ago along with my wife ordering me a nikon Z9 for Xmas/work. I think I will wait for a at least a 30 megapixel camera. I use both Nikon and Olympus camera for wildlife, landscape and outdoor type activity photography.
So nothing to make me willing upgrade from my gh5... Can't wait to see the review of the gh6 in your channel because I love the way you present every photography piece so far!
Great review. I look forward to seeing your review of this camera after it is released for sale to the public. I would also be very interested in seeing a side by side comparison with the Panasonic GH6.
You've sold me, Chris (sorry, Jordan, but I don't do video), I've pre - ordered 2 OM 1 bodies and part exchanging my EM1X and EM1 mark III. I have never pre - ordered a camera before, but I am confident it wil be a good move.
Kudos to you guys for this. Well researched. Even though it's still pre-production copy. I hope you also review the 2 OM lenses - 12-40 f2.8 mark ii and the 40-150mm f4.
As always I came to the right channel. Great review! Looks to me it's more photo centric on the new specs and I already have an MII so I won't be upgrading to this because I need more on the video side but anxiously awaiting the GH6. I'll be back!
Since they are back in thr game with new models i'm stoked to see the new model of the 5 Series when it launches. I went for Olympus because of the size and that will be the one to get if it's again made if metall unlike the EM5 mark III. I use my EM 10 Mark II and oh boy that Autofocus is killing me. Most missed shots are because of the autofocus and if something's moving I can simply forget it
Wow, OMDS does NOT appear to be gearing up to shut down operations! I’m going to cry a little when OLYMPUS stops appearing on the “prism housing”. I think that’s a bad plan, but maybe something they had to agree to…
I am super excited to see this mostly positive review. For all the reasons mentioned, I aslo love my Olympus light weight compact gear. But I am also excited to see what Panasonic comes up with...just give us that phase detect autofocus, and the video king is back! I have no problem sharing my Olympus lenses on a pani-boy camera!
Good review! I love that we're getting more and more video options coming out now, outside of the big 3 of Canon, Sony and Panasonic; now that we have Nikon offering internal raw, and Fuji and OM Systems throwing in 10-bit. The reason why the colours were off in Rec2020 is because the primary colours are spaced further apart compared to Rec709, which means they're capturing more hues in-between. This is a huge benefit if you're grading it using a colour managed workflow, because then you can just use math to transform between Rec709, HLG, PQ, etc without having to do much manual work. Yes, it doesn't look as good if you're manually grading or using an old LUT, but the video industry is taking a step towards automation with colour management anyway (for the better), so I'd consider this a big improvement! Hopefully ACES and Resolve will add OM Log support 😩
The only thing that I think one might have expected that isn't here is a few more megapixels. other than that it seems like a great upgrade to me. Improved autofocus, it's what was really needed, and it seems that they have delivered. More speed, better menus, huge viewfinder upgrade, better video. Well done.
I‘m really glad that OM is keeping M43 alive with this camera and it seems to come with some nice improvements. Just the sensor seems to be a bit slow given the fact that it is stacked. The specs actually sound a lot like those of the stacked 1” sensor Sony is putting in the RX100 series for years now. I wonder if Sony just scaled that up to M43. But I’m not complaining. For that price it’s still a great deal.
Oh my god. This OM-1 almost makes me go back to Olympus (from a Sony A6300). Airplane subject detection is THE mode i need the most. Pair it with blazing fast C-AF and i´m so close to buy one!
I'm glad they havent increased the pixel count on the sensor, as there is much more to gain by not going over 20mb. I dont want larger file sizes, more noise in the pixels, reduced shutter speed and worse rolling shutter. [edit: kind of said that wrong, I meant a worse shutter speed which would be an increase in shutter speed]
@@SuttonBen I guess the commenter here may be referring to the fact that when you have more megapixels, you're more likely to notice slight motion blur that may occur as a result of shutter shock. As far as I know, this affects many cameras to a degree, so as a result you have to use faster shutter speeds to avoid shutter shock effects on high MP sensors (like 36 MP and up).
@@Bill-NM A little redundant to say after also stating "more noise in the pixels" haha. Also, all of these things are easily counteracted by just downscaling a higher resolution file when the extra details are not required
It’s so funny, i was thinking to switch back to MFT a few weeks ago, before I knew these new cameras would drop! I’m glad I waited to buy a G9 or GH5 now i see this review. Definitely gonna wait until the GH6 drops to see what flagship suits me! Keep up the great work guys! I’ve been watching you since the camera store 😁
Thanks guys...watched at 2 am! Liked the summary....an upgraded version of the MK 3. Looking forward to the review of the production model! Curious, when recording video is there still a 30 minute limit (though not really an issue for me) and are the saved video clips still multiple short duration (which seems like a pain) instead of a longer file like most other brands?
Super!!! The main thing is that Olympus did not die just renamed, and we still have two player in the M4/3 field which is GOOD. Some time ago everyone was talking about M4/3 is slowly disappearing ...no more talk like that...
I already have an E-M1 Mark III and it is the best camera I have ever owned. Of course the last "good" cameras I owned were a Canon EOS 3, an Elan II, and a Canon D30. That last one was the first "affordable" digital body that Canon made! I miss having a second body to shoot with, and specifically I want one to mount my 300/4 on for wildlife when I go to Yellowstone. This sucker looks like just the ticket, so I've already ordered it.
Glad they kept the Olympus name on it. Glad they made the battery life noticeably better including the charging with a basic USB charger. I'm looking forward to the next Pen-F iteration to be honest. It looks stylish in silver (or black) and if priced at
Om owns all the IP rights to the Olympus camera name now. They should continue to use the name of Olympus. When Smith & Wesson got sold to a new parent company, they didn't change the name on their guns. In fact, they changed the name of the parent company to Smith & Wesson Holdings for a while.
Apart from the count of megapixels, this is a big bump from previous EM-1 line up. I own the mk I and mk II, would definitely get an OM-1 if had the chance.
I'm definitely sure most of those shots were taken with the GH6 and its new dual gain iso for highlights and shadows retention thingy. Looks really good. Keeps the shadows clean while making the highlights really nice and not clipped! Amazing
I know that a lot of people think this doesn't matter that much, and in many ways I agree, but I would still like to see a 43 megapixel om systems camera. I am very happy with my 20 megapixel E-M1 iii, but if an OM-1X (E-M1X ii) came out with 40+ megapixel, I would be willing to spend $3000+ for it. That being said, I think this is where OM needs to go. If they want to become one of the most sought after nature wildlife cameras, they will do 3 things to compete with Sony/Canon/Nikon: 1) Keep the similar performance to OM-1 (maybe 24 frames per second would suffice), 2) bump the megapixels to compete with the R5, and 3) keep putting an emphasis on improving video features. Look, I am extremely happy with what I have, but I want my investment to keep winning financially, and imagine how many people would prefer the lightweight portability of micro 4/3, but the detail and flexibility of having larger files for cropping, and higher res video and/or more video fidelity: i think this is the winning formula for OM, and micro 4/3 as a whole
There are pixel-peepers and there are the people who actually print, 40MP is ridiculously high for any real work. Double the MP is not the way, the ISO performance would honestly make it almost unusable. I don't mind using ISO 6400 or over with my E-M1X, but too much is too much. Maybe it's possible in 8-10 years, but not now. And for video, anything over 4K is overkill, most videos are watched on smaller screens nowadays where the resolution is usually only 1080p. Really the only things I want from Olympus is far better marketing and updates to their older lenses, e.g. the 300mm F4 is already 6 years old (but still fantastic) If you need to crop wildlife with MFT, simply get closer (or your lens is way, way too short).
