This video is about the new OM SYSTEM (ex Olympus) OM-1 mark II camera review. Hands on review where I am talking about if it is worth to upgrade?
In this video I am going through the similarities between the OM-1 m I and the OM-1 m II OM SYSTEM camera.
There are a lot of similarities such as same processor and senzor, the Truepic X and a 20.4 MP CMOS senzor, also dual-slot card, and all the outside parameters, size, buttons, weight is the exact same.
The only outside difference is the OM SYSTEM logo and the MARK II logo.
But we got some new features like the Live ND goes up to 128 and my favorite one is the GND. It is not only a normal graduated filter from top to bottom but it also can rotate by you and it automatically rotates between vertical and horizontal. It is very useful if you are a landscape photographer and you want to shoot sky, waterfall, or any water and moving objects.
OM SYSTEM is niching down and focusing the bird, wildlife, landscape and macro photographers. With compact size cameras and lenses it is a great choice if you are looking for a small but still professional camera.

The explanation of the strange 12,5 & 16,7 FPS for the SH2 Modes is actually pretty straight forward: Native Capturing: 50/1 = 50 FPS Capture every other frame: 50/2 = 25 FPS Capture every third: 50/3 = (16.66…≈) 16.7 FPS Capture every fourth: 50/4 = 12.5 FPS This feature is very useful and could easily be back ported to older OM-D models

Here's my take. This is really just an OM1 with a bigger ram chip. The other changes are software. OMDS should have put that ram chip in the original camera, and given us some firmware upgrades like Olympus used to do.
@formermpc10
@formermpc10 5 месяцев назад
OM-1 was released prematurely which is why it's needed so many FW updates and still has problems.

Will we be saying the same thing about the Mk II in two years time? Actually, most cameras today get multiple bug fixes, just like computer programs. In fact, they're sharing more with computer operating systems all the time, and there is no sign of this decreasing . Fortunately for the buyers of the OM1, they appear to have got the hardware right; the lack of ram was probably a marketing decision, not an engineering decision. I'm not aware of any widely reported hardware problems with the OM1. Keeping the same hardware and bringing out a MkII was probably a wise decision from that point of view. My worry about OMDS is that the suits at the board table at JIP start over-riding engineering decisions, now that Olympus is in the rear view mirror. I've noticed that their Pro lenses are getting cheaper, dropping the function button and focus clutch for example. This would be a business decision. Let's hope they don't start cutting corners on their camera bodies going down the road. @@formermpc10

Cameras are now operating systems like personal computers, so I expect bug fixes. Are there hardware problems with the OM1? ( other than not having enough ram that is.) If there are, that's a lot more concerning than software bug fixes. But I'm not aware of any widespread complaints about the hardware. @@formermpc10

You mention human subject detection now includes the body / focuses on the body (10mins 20 sec) unlike previous models. Have you tested this? Is that correct? It's not just face detection as per previous models?

Megapixels might matter if you are dealing with commercial clients. RED35 on RU-vid had to upgrade to a Panasonic Lumix GH6 because his client wanted 24 megapixels. I'm still happy with 20 megapixels and even 16 and 12 megapixels.
@POVPHOTOGUY
@POVPHOTOGUY 5 месяцев назад
I am curious who was the client? Because: A: most of the client have no clue what is Megapixel they just focus on the final product. My worked published in Billboards, Magazines, Prints, Citylights. It all shot w Olympus system and 20MP. Usually sent out 5-10MP images. Never had issue. B: if the client really need that you can still upsample your photos and make a 50-80MP photos.

@@POVPHOTOGUY I have found some crazy clients in the past asking silly questions before and they really have no clue what they are talking about. I know RED35 does work with models so might have been some modeling company? I once did some sample work for a real estate company and they wanted everything HDR. So I used my Olympus OMD E-M1ii and put it in HDR mode. It was in manual when doing HDR but I did not move the dial on the camera. And the meta data showed it. The lady emailed me back saying your dial needs to be in M mode and I told her when I go into HDR mode I can control the setting manually. It might have been something else in the settings but this is the best I can remember it was a long time also. I think around 2018. Also all the images was tac sharp from front to back but they wanted everything to be F8 or F11. They wanted me to reshoot it and I said no the images are fine. They said they needed the settings to be like this for their software. I asked them what software they use they would not tell me. There are reasons for more megapixels but most people don't have a good reason for more megapixels.
@thomasreed49
@thomasreed49 Месяц назад
its biggest drawback is in nature photography for all sorts of reasons. For instance they have a 150 to 400 mm telephoto lens. But at the top end 400 mm you have no chance of cropping the picture. Although at 300 you can. In nature photography this is a major drawback with this system. I know it’s called a 150 to 400 mm lens truthfully it is a 150 to 300 mm telephoto lens. They’re pretending you get with micro 4/3 200 mm more but that’s not the case.
@bigrobotnewstoday1436
@bigrobotnewstoday1436 Месяц назад
@@thomasreed49 No system is perfect and I always say do the best you can with what you have. One photographer back in the DSLR days I think tried for years to get a photo of a bird diving into the water and get the birds beak touching the water. It took him years to get that photo. Now a days that's very easy with cameras with pre-burst mode taking 120 photos a second.

Do you think OM -1 will be good for wildlife/bird photography considering the fact that its only 20 megapixel and you need to crop a lot and what about low light capability??
@POVPHOTOGUY
@POVPHOTOGUY 2 месяца назад
OM1 is really good for wildlife. M4/3 is its benefits. Like the lenses are actually closer, so you don't have to crop. Also super lightweight compare to other cameras and the lens stab is amazing. My friend do wildlife and he also do workshops, and wild tours with photographers. And after a weekend all FF guys usually do the switch. :)

yes, many times w my older Olympus cameras. Quality is great. Even a 10MP camera is great for printing btw. There is some missconception that people says u need 30-50MP cameras if u wanna do (large) prints.

@@POVPHOTOGUY I have no experience with Micro Four Thirds systems, but the OM-1 MARK II seems to be a very capable camera. my main concern is noise level and dynamic range (and of course large print) as I do a lot of night photography in stormy, rainy and dark situations. Would like to try the OM-1 MARK II and if it works I will happily switch to it. thanks for the excellent video...wish you all the best!

@@interlapse I am not a night photographer but OM System has features as Stary Sky, and many others what is dedicated for sky photography. Yes many features nobody talks about but they are pretty good and revolutionary also. So if you interested check out some OM System ambassadors who r really wildlife and night photographers and they can help u understand and know the system benefits because they are. I can't but I can say noise level is significant lower in the new OM1 camera and the mark2 as well. But if u take a look to my work on my websites you can see. Many times people think I am shoot on a FF Sony camera. But I am not. 90% of my work both on my websites are shot on my old Pen-F camera. And a few with the new OM1. Shot me a dm on insta or email me and I am happy to send over my portfolio, etc. so u can see the quality.

is the built in GND and ND any better than the older model? the ND on my EM1X is close to useless. I regret every single time not having the real ND filter with me. sounds like another useless gimmick to fill the spec sheet.

What is wrong w the older model? Can't tell u about that as I haven't experienced w the EM1X and just tested a few shot w the M1mII. Had no problem with it, but I shoot in city condition I am not a nature/wildlife photographer so can't tell any difference.

I think they are doing great in order to make money. And I hope they will, in some point in the future, start to bring the upgrades we want and need. The OM1.2 is a very interesting Camera, but personally I see no point to upgrade from my OM1.1, and I’m frustrated with the FW update strategy. They should launch a Camera with a newer sensor, 4K 120, 5.2K 60, and stop to bring cold coffee to the table. Many Olympus supporters are loosing patience and faith! The system is REALLY compelling, but they NEED to launch NEW products.
@gregfeeler6910
@gregfeeler6910 5 месяцев назад
The sensor in the OM-1 is the most advanced on the market. Developed by Sony and only used in just a few cameras even two years after the OM-1 came out. Peta Pixal texted the OM-1 against the G9II (with it's 25mp sensor) and gave the IQ win to the OM-1 for lower noise and better dynamic range. I'm not a video shooter so I don't find either OM-1 lacking there - but we all have different needs. I sense frustration in your message that you don't have your wish list now. Well, sorry for that, but aren't you missing the important point that OM System released a major update to a "new" camera just two years? I see it as great news that they are aggressive enough to listen to customer input and make improvements so quickly. Another two years and hopefully we'll see some big video improvements.
@jonbarnard7186
@jonbarnard7186 5 месяцев назад
The OM1 and a couple of lenses was the last of Olympus equipment. Now it's OMDS all the way. Building on the OM1 may have been a good choice from that point of view. We don't know what OMD (JIP) is going to come up with. I share your feelings about the FW updates, but that's the new business model. Say goodbye to feature and performance updates. OMD isn't giving anything away from now on, that's clear. And your OM1 (and my OM1) will not see new features or performance enhancements via updates. If we want that, we'll have to buy the Mk II. Whether this type of business strategy is good or bad for OMDS remains to be seen. It doesn't make me feel any better about the brand, that's for sure. They had better be careful. There are a lot of cameras on the market in this price range, and the G9ii looks pretty good too, if you want to keep using your Olympus glass. When was the last time you saw a Sony Vaio?
@POVPHOTOGUY
@POVPHOTOGUY 5 месяцев назад
I understand and see both u and @gregfeeler6910 point. IMO there is no need to upgrade from OM1 to OM1mII. And yes as a hybrid shooter I would love to see video performance upgrade but they clear w their path to serve the outdoor photographers and video is just an add on. But if I were me I would def make different lines as Sony as they have the potential w the amazing stabilizer and many other feature. So would be nice to see a video focus camera in the line w less photo features example.
@jonbarnard7186
@jonbarnard7186 5 месяцев назад
My worry is that OMD is concentrating on such a small, specialized segment of the market. It looks like they've given up on competing on video for example. Any m.four-thirds shooter who shoots a lot of video now, would choose the G9ii. Personally, I don't care about video, because I rarely use it, but when you think about it, the OM1ii is significantly more money than the G9ii., and the video and hybrid market seems to be driving the market now. I'm tired of paying for video R&D myself, but I'm not interested in paying for video R&D and not even getting the video. Can they survive and thrive with such a specialized market? What will happen if Panasonic comes out with a G9iii that's faster and has better focus tracking? Brand loyalty only goes so far, and if OMD isn't careful, those of us with a pile of Olympus glass may make the move. It appears that they have already decided not to support the original OM1 with upgrades. Is the life cycle of an OMD camera only 2 years now? @@POVPHOTOGUY
@POVPHOTOGUY
@POVPHOTOGUY 5 месяцев назад
@@jonbarnard7186 I am agree with you. It is an intresting move as I said in my video that they niching down for that segment. As far as I know stats are great. With the bigger wildlife lens. However if we see the bigger picture it might not as big as other companies but for their market they doing good so they concentrating on that things and not try to do the 'try and error' type of things. So the future will tell us was it a good move or not. I am loyal for them and most of the time I use the OM System system but as my company grow and have different area and clients I've to use different systems as well because each job has specific needs. But for me the real cameras has always be the Olympus, Fuji, Hasselblad line. The rest is no doubt great cameras, perfect cameras I can use but not feel the soul of it.

If you are trying to say this it's "just" a rebadged Sigma lens, then that would be incorrect. It's been completely upgraded by OM System with new high-end glass elements, a totally different IS system that gives 2 to 3 more stops of IS with the lens only, and another stop of IS because it's SyncIS compatible with OM bodies, has the proprietary ZERO coating internally, and is compatible with both OM teleconverters. None of these things are offered by the SIgma product.
