Hi! Great video and tip, but this function actually doesnt affect the raw file. If you import to Lightroom the file is completely unaffected. If you use OM Workspace, the setting comes along with the RAW file, where you can turn it on or off. In camera it only affects JPEG file output. (and also the RAWfile previews which you see onscreen in the camera which is a bit misleadiing unless you use OM Workspace for your editing) Thanks for a very enjoyable video, makes me want to get out there 📷

Thanks for your comment, and you are absolutely right. Some other people also noticed this, so I did some research. When I recorded this video, I used a pre-production model that only used JPG files. Because it was so visible in the menu, I kind of assumed they made it for RAW... In a later video, I mentioned that this was a mistake. Sorry, I caused the confusion. It would be a nice option for the future! It will definitely be a game changer if they can create that feature in RAW. At least, I'm happy, so see that I inspired you to go out more! Thanks for watching and the comment! Grt Guido

Guido, excellent video, beautiful images. Do not take too heart when people get critical. You are an outstanding photographer, with an excellent eye. Your images show us that from week to week. You do a very good job planning your sessions so it is not luck but planning. That first image of the tree was outstanding and so was that last one. Thanks Guido keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for this comment. I really appreciate it. This is the first comment I reed for this video, so I'm wondering what others are saying if you are warning me, haha. I don't really bother to much anymore about the negative comments. Not everyone likes the same stuf that's life. As long as people don't get offensive or saying that I'm a liar etc then I'm fine with it. During the 2.5 years I only blocked 2 people because they were constantly sending offensive comments, so lucky youtube has a solution for that. I just focus more on the friendly once like yours. Hey Guido, nice video.
@GuidoVanDeWater
@GuidoVanDeWater 5 месяцев назад
Ah, just forgot. I use the function you described actually quite a lot. I use it in conjunction with the Grainy Film Art filter. This filter looks standard like Tri-X film if I am correct, but by changing the highlights and shadows you can make it look like a completely different film like for instance Agfa APX (the original film, not the modern version). So handy!
@GuidoVanDeWater
@GuidoVanDeWater 5 месяцев назад
That sounds like a great experiment! Do you shoot in raw or jpg and are the adjustments you make also saved in those files? There is some debate whether or not the information is actually saved to the files. Thnx Grt guido

@@GuidoVanDeWater I shoot in RAW but using an Art filter automatically means a JPG file is created. The highlight and shadow adjustment is saved in both the JPG and RAW file.

I watched this video from Veritasium, a science channel, that luck is a big determinant to success. A lot of landscape photography conditions we chase is somehow related to luck, but we can repeat the plan over and over again until we get the right conditions increasing the chances of being there when that “lucky” moment comes. It’ll come, sooner or later.
@GuidoVanDeWater
@GuidoVanDeWater 5 месяцев назад
I don't know if that is luck when you plan for something carefully and you are persuasive enough to keep going for that one shot. I think that's just called reward for all the effort you've done 🙂 thanks for watching grt guido

@@GuidoVanDeWater totally get what you’re saying, but for me it’s still related to the concept of chance. You can increase that chance with the forecast and predictions, but if weather still decides to play on you and goes outside expectations, it’s up to the weather gods if one photographer gets it in the 1st try and another photographer on the 100th. The first one is definitely luckier than the other, but doesnt mean they are better 😂

Hello, I have only very recently discovered your channel and found it worthwhile and subscribed, thanks. With regards to your highlight adjustment tip and the need to reset it afterwards, I'd like to offer my tip as an addition to your tip. If you have a custom model set for landscape for example, you can apply that temporary highlight mode and assuming you haven't set your camera to remember changes to the custom mode it will simply reset to your saved custom mode automatically with the highlight function turned off again once you have moved to a different mode or turned your camera off

Welcome to the channel! I'm happy to see you like the videos and images! Good idea to program it in a custom mode! @GuidoVanDeWater 5 месяцев назад
Even do I don't like to plan my trips I do thibk preparation and mindset determine if you're going to be lucky or not. It's all about knowing what shots to look for in the condition you are faced with. The ability to adapt is a big key factor if you're going to have a successful trip or not. At least that is what I think and that is possible by lots of experience so going out more eventually gives you more "lucky" moments 😊 thanks for watching and your comment. Grt guido

I wonder why this feature (19:00) is not promoted more - I've not seen it on other cameras, and it doesn't seem to be mentioned in other OMS videos. The manual is very brief about it. I much prefer it to Live GND which takes time to process and can look artificial in real landscapes. Thank you for demonstrating it.

There was some debate about this feauture ij the comments weather or not it would work on a raw file. Some mentioned that nothing changed in the raw file and only in the jpg. For as far as I tested, it did change the raw file, but I still have not double-checked it properly to make sure it worked as I mentioned. Hopefully, I will be able to do that soon! So before you start celebrating I would test it first 😅 who knows you will see the outcome on the channel soon. Thanks for watching and your comment. grt guido

@boboneill1828 That's exactly what I experienced, and so I shared this tip, but then people got their doubts. So I'm happy to see that I wasn't telling anything stupid here. Bu the way I was just as surprised as you were that there isn't an official announcement on this feature. I asked my ambassador contacts here in the netherlands, and they didn't even know about it. Try combining this with the live nd or gnd filter and you can crazy dynamic range results. Thanks for sharing your experience.

@@GuidoVanDeWater I'm sorry I deleted my earlier reply after I did a test with jpeg (artificial light) last night and the effect shows clearly in the jpeg but not the raw file. Very disappointing 😥 I willI was hoping it would give a small increase in dynamic range without the artefacts of HDR. It's just another "computational" feature that I will probably never use. I'll stick to my polariser and post processing. The manual should be more clear about the limitations, and not simply add it to exposure compensation which does affect raw files. I going out this morning so I'll try again with landscapes but I am not hopeful.

@@GuidoVanDeWater I did a trial today, saving both raw and LSF. Unfortunately I found that only the LSF files showed any effect, the raw files were unaltered. On processing the images I could get much better results from the raw files. The feature seems only to apply a curves filter when saving, with the potential of increasing shadow noise. I don't see the point of having a feature which has the potential to give an enhanced dynamic range, then saving it to an 8bit jpeg.
@GuidoVanDeWater
@GuidoVanDeWater 2 месяца назад
I did some testing also, and i found exactly the same results. I also looked at the files that were Initualy tested this on. I'm actually wondering if this feauture has been out programmed with the first firmware upgrade. If I look at those first images from months ago, I can clearly see a difference. I have no idea what I did then and how it worked, but it definitely isn't working on the raw files anymore now. Who knows, we will get an upgrade someday with this feauture installed to raw. I would love to use it again. Thanks for sharing your experience. I will male a video soon where I share this new info. Sorry for the disappointing result. Grt guido

Very good philosophy... There IS some measure of luck, sure (being in the right place at the right time for special light or unusual animal sightings, etc.) but the key word is planning for whatever weather or conditions (or fewer people!) to increase one's odds of capturing those special, unique images. Perseverance DOES make a big difference, of course. Have I kicked myself sometimes for being lazy and not having my gear with me or being lazy and staying in bed? Yesss! I'm only human... lol The best images I've obtained have been because I kept my gear with me, paid attention to weather conditions, then played the proverbial hand of cards that nature dealt. I see the "rushed" mentality in society these days (including visitors I overhear at our National Parks and other sites) and many fail to realize that images (such as your deer and tree image) are a result of patience and being there more than 30 seconds. I use exposure compensation a lot on my E-M1X, of course, but I never did look at this "curves" function you shared. On the E-M1X, it is accessible on the control panel (a box with a diagonal line) and functions in similar fashion to your OM (by default, the front/rear dials control the shadows and highlights, mid-tones are controlled after clicking the "OK" button). Pressing and holding the "OK" button resets it to the flat curve. I shall play with this when I am out to shoot next time, for if it saves it to the .raw file, then that would certainly give one a better starting point when beginning their post-processing. Thanks for sharing!
@GuidoVanDeWater
@GuidoVanDeWater 5 месяцев назад
I guess we are all human. I have to admit that I'm also too lazy sometimes 😅 I always say to myself that I can't miss what I didn't see. So that's why I never look when images are taken on social media because that's when it starts to hurt 😅 people often see photography as taking a simple image. I'm totally OK with that and am not going to explain myself anymore. But like you say, a lot of time goes into an image. Possibly multiple trips and lots of planning. I didn't know the feature was also on the em1x. I sold mine 6 months ago, but in the 3 years I used it, I've noticed this, haha. I've been using it more and more very useful from time to time. Thank you for watching and your comment. I really appreciate it that you took the time to write that! Grt guido

20:45. No, that’s a nice shot. It could be even better if you had a more textured sky or better light to work with, but that’s where luck (and your perseverance) come in. Thanks for pointing out that exposure compensation feature. It looks interesting, but is there a specific advantage to doing that in-camera as opposed to post-production in Lightroom?
