So beautiful to be able to see your background in these shots, always dreamed about that and Panasonic has delivered! What an amazing improvement in their autofocus technology, powered by AI that decides for you that you don’t need to look at the main and the only one static human subject in the frame, instead let’s focus on what’s behind him! Stellar job Panyboy, stellar job!
At first I was disappointed as well, expecting some more OM-1 specs trickling down. But then I realised that I am not the target audience. I own the EM5.3 since two years, upgraded from EM10 (mark1!) after many years of happy use. I also have the OM-1 since two months now, got it barely used a few hundred bucks cheaper. As I have all the features I miss from the OM-5 in the OM-1, this saved me some money and headache. If I was still in the marked like two years ago, the OM-5 would have been the obvious choice, making me very happy as the OM5.3 did, but so I will keep the EM5.3 as my small second camera and buy some more nice glass instead. Lens quality is more important then the body, as you all know. In some years, there might be a new OM-5 with USB-C PD, new sensor, new viewfinder, magnesium body again, the bigger battery and new menu system, getting me tempted to upgrade again. I am a 99% stills guy and love my Olympus cameras and lenses, changing systems to full frame or whatever would be a stupid choice for me. These are all good cameras (like most cameras nowadays) but they are just tools and always chasing the newest tech does not make me a better photographer.
I really enjoy your satire! You’re my favorite. That being said the OM-5 and 1 are selling faster than peanut butter. It’s actually quite a capable system 🤣
I agree and disagree at the same time. You reviewed E-M5 III in the past and said it would be a perfect camera if it had AUTO-ISO in manual movie mode. This one has it ;-) Do we have any other small(!) camera for video that has: 4K, very good stabilization, phase AF, touchable and movable touchscreen, low rolling shutter, good colors, access to native lenses? Unfortunately I don't think so. On the other hand OM-5 improves in a few aspects only. Too few. If only they made: C4k in 24, 25 and 30 fps, improved 4k quality to C4k quality, gave 60 fps even like skipped, 10 bits. Then this camera could be stellar for videos. I agree that this camera is the first OM's child and should set new horizons. But it does not. Not mentioning little things like no USB-C or old menu... But still I might buy it for casual filming as everything else also has drawbacks. The thing is which drawbacks we can accept...
Your turn to get this with a simple person unable to achieve anything or do anything themselves they find pleasure in criticising other people this man is the epitome of that statement.
mega pixels are over rated, colour accuracy matters more, and that's why I think Olympus is very underrated. Really hope the new owners get their act together and treat the camera industry seriously.
Hi K, not an open-minded commentary. I work with Nikon FF gear for very low light and very large prints, a 1” Sony RX100 VII which is with me wherever I go, and, most often, with M43 for the shear pleasure of shooting with it (Oly for photos and Pana for video). I “upgraded’ from the E-M5 III to the OM5 because I was always very pleased with the E-M5 line overall and the OM5 has a couple of new features that are useful to me. I agree that OM System could have done better but the OM5, as is, is unbeatable for its combination of competence, portability and price. If one does not need the new features, then the E-M5 III is a great deal, especially the used ones (in excellent condition). I also shoot documentary video of nature subjects from medium size to close-ups, often with the camera on a slider with a wireless follow focus/zoom. For these subjects, even if the OM5 was not designed for video, it works very well for me. It gives me 4K/30 or FHD/60 (to avoid judder when I pan). Small and light, it is very comfortable to handle and does not stress the slider even with larger lenses and accessories. It also works very well in my home studio with the same setup doing video of smaller arts and crafts products, in both situations with the Oly 60mm macro and 12-100mm f/4 zoom. I can understand that the camera does not meet your personal needs and expectations but there is a whole world of photography and video out (or in) there where it does an excellent job. A number of reputable on-line reviewers started with negative reviews of the OM5 only to revise them after a while with more positive, pragmatic conclusions.
OM Systems ad for the OM5 says that, "it's like your favorite pair of boots". That has to be the lamest thing I have ever heard in advertising. This is the death knell of this brand.
Yep. I ignored your review (even though I was amused by it) and bought an OM5. The price point between a used OMD whatever-was-the-latest-before-Olympus-croaked was too small. And it's a nice little camera - better in many ways than the Panasonic G9 I sold 3 years ago. And the OM1 I just bought is excellent - a real step forward. BUT WTF!! If the OM5 was incrementalism, what the hell is the mark II. I hope its not the death knell for Olympus - they had something great.
The OM-1 is a fantastic Camera. And The OM-5 would have better reviews if they put the new Menu and USB-C on it. But they brought us cold coffee! The Camera is indeed very good. I hope they are planning to bring a OM-3, a PenF ii and a OM-1X, living the OM-5 as a entry level Camera.
Was this shot with the GH6? The pulsing and going in and out of focus is much smoother than it used to be! 😬 The boardroom meeting made it especially visible.
He hasn't caught up to using Manual focus and working out the depth of field so he can sit in there in it. Top end camera gear rendered useless by lack of camera skill.
@@Localtraveler2376 I have a Panasonic and you just need the right setting to get focus to follow the face. Wrong setting doesn't work - how is that Panasonics fault.
Your video is very well made in the sense, that it got me thinking, I'll give you that. But for the lack of new ... Some years ago I had bought and used my beloved Olympus PL9. When the PL10 emerged, it was clear from the getgo, that it was an absolutely unchanged relabeld PL9, aside from the Numer 10 on it and the software nothing new. Buuut - it had the new feature "Silent Shutter" in the Shutter Modes. My PL9 could do it as well, but only in the special menu Advanced Photo (AP), that I had to reactivate every time I started the camera. But I often need the silent shutter - So I bought the PL10 with the plan to resell my PL9 immediately, to get most of the money back. But there was a forum that showed a hack to get rid of the video restriction of 30 Minutes for the PL9. I tried it, and it worked like a charm. Now I could film a whole wedding, a whole theatre performance, ...So I kept both, because I need both functions so badly in my typical way of use. I don't think of it as a ripoff - and certeanily not a new one - Olymus (now OM System) can't bring a completely new designed camera (per type) every two years. But they want to offer something to give the notion of progress - and most of it, like the Live ND Filter, the unrestricted recording time, the webcam mode, the new video modes...) are really useful - and for some a good enough reason to upgrade. To me the OM1 is a beast of a camera, but too expensive and too big for me. But it needs another 2 years until they can upgrade another camera type as much as that. That doesn't mean, that I don't see unsused potential in the new OM EM5. Far more tweakable video modes could be the "must have" reason for some semi professional EM 5 III Users. Or a more progressive way of Image Stacking. But they have to stay afloat in the meanwhile, and I fimrly believe, that this upgrade is enough to achieve that. It's not the revolutionary "must have" masterpiece, but a decent upgrade of a very good and compact camera.
You can complain for all you want, but can any other system match the Olympus and Panasonic M43 in terms of weight and reach? Can you find a mirrorless system that gives you the reach of 800mm at f6.3 while weighing only 1.5kg? For a person like me who has shoulder and neck injury, the Olympus or Panasonic system with the lightweight 100-400mm is the perfect match.
Not everyone wants to shoot telephoto with their system, and if telephoto is the only remaining place where m43rds has an advantage I find that a rather precarious position to be in.
Instructive and interesting channel. Often agree. But absolutely not this time. The OM-5 has as unsurpassed quality: the light weight (413 grams) combined with very good stabilization (6.5 stops) , makes it possible to shoot hand-held video with a zoom lens, for example with Panasonic's 14-150mm lens. Just try pan movement with another light camera in zoom mode. The Om-5 beats them by a wide margin. You can let luts loose on the flat profile available, so you can combine the videos in post with material from other cameras. Of course my GH6 is better: but it weighs a lot heavier. OM-5 is a wonderful lightweight camera to take with you for, say, a day if you're going to see a city and want to shoot occasionally documentary-style video.
Em5 MIII is my light compact, fits in my every day bag, photography cam for anything between m43 25-100mm. Still good as a walk around small vlog cam too. anything else though. I've moved on, and the OM5 should have as well, not ok. My excitement died with a heavy heart when I learnt the specs lol
@Phillip Banes I’ve used both and the photos are a night and day difference. The EM5 is much closer to the Sony A6300/6500 with still by far the best stabilization you could get.
I actually also use an Oly EPL10 if I'm just going for a small friend social gathering. Most of the time people just want it to look good on at most a 4K monitor, and with a 25mm f1.8, it well and truly does that lol. Did help that the camera was half price, and after I sold the kit zoom, battery charger, it was crazy cheap, but not quite free :S For the last wedding I used the EM5 MIII with the Oly 25mm F1.2, and Sigma 56mm F1.4, and the pictures where amazing for large print. The Pany 35-100mm f2.8 is my go to primary light travel zoom that doesn't freak out too much in forest environments. But, my Pany S5 Camera is proving to just be better (Sometimes no difference) in most cases when it comes to final image quality... Especially any video work.
Love my OM-1. For sports setting hack. I turn off “Face and eye detect”. Small center square AF point. Now I can focus really - really fast to each athlete. Face detect is nice but not good for fast sports.
GH6 AF improvements continue to impress me.. it's revolutionary how much they have improved since the original GH! But no worries, they'll get it right (or at least "improved") with GH9. Hummmm, make that the GH11 just to be sure.
I'm usually happy with any new camera release - audience for everything and all that garbage - but this Olympus "release" really had me shaking my head. Now...onto the "new" Pentax release. 😮💨
The om-5 does seem to have three things that are improvements for video over my e-m5 iii: no record limit as you said, auto-iso in video and the ability to act as a webcam. The video exposure modes on the e-m5 iii are just photo exposure modes with you having to set the iso. You can't fix the shutter and aperture, and just let the camera figure out the iso. Really annoying. Still I can't see why anyone would buy the om-5 over a used e-m1 ii or e-m5 iii. Both are just about the same camera at half the price.
@@theMadMan74 We probably misunderstood each other. I'm using an hdmi capture card to get a clean camera signal for video calls. No additional software is needed in that case.
Honest review. But entirely from your own perspective. Which is fine, it's your view and you're entitled to have it. You often reminded us about that and that others might see things different. You mentioned the world is video-centric not photography centric. I don't agree. I agree that if video is what you do, you'd better skip OM system. Go with Pany or Sony, or even Fuji. But the story is very different if photography is what you do. Which is what you don't. We know. But you could at least try to see if other people exist that do find what they need in this camera. You were hoping for a more updated EM5. I guess we all did. But this is how the business works. Companies need to release stuff to stay in the picture. I see all the other brands do the exact same thing. Sony's 7R Mk5 isn't that big a deal either. Neither is the XT5 or the R6 MKII. We see this minor improvement cycle for year after year. Sometimes the step up is a bit bigger, sometimes it's negligible. Companies need to release something each year. I wish it was different, so they could spent more time on actually doing new things before releasing something. OM is still in the phase of getting up to speed after the takeover. A big risk for them is releasing nothing for years and years. The competition is very tough and they might miss the boat. But they could also miss the boat by releasing bullshit updated camera's. I'm glad I don't have to make that decision. It's always easier to blame from the sideline when you don't have any responsibility.
The Fuji X-T5 is a much bigger deal than this. My main issue with OM-5 is not that it's a bad camera in an on itself, but that it shows more of the old Olympus at releasing products. The OM-5 should have been a $1500-$1700 USD camera, with the OM-1 sensor. Cut the buffer down a bit. Worse battery vs OM-1. Less FPS, But don't cut down on image quality. How old is that OM-5 sensor now? IN turn Fuji traditionally puts their top of the line sensor down their line (see XT3/XT4/X_E4/XT30). The OM-5 should have also been made back to magnesium alloy with real fixes to the tripod mount (they claim it's stronger but it sure doesn't feel like it as I check mine), better EVF, re-design thumb rest that won't fall off over time. New JPEG AI noise reduction engine of OM-1. And that's the thing. It's better to get the right camera, more pro at $1500-$1700 than cheaper at $1200.
Pentax is in the perfect position - loser with beauty inside. They need to make a new Z series of cameras with pci-e internal storage, three USB-C 20Gbps ports, dual express type B (the opposite of Sony memory anywho) card slots reversable with UHS-II cards. A large 12 MP touch screen (like a phone) so we can view our 4K video live on it. They need to go all in on touch control with a row of ball dials that double as selectors kind of like on the DaVinci control surfaces but finger tip sized and better. All inside a weather sealed enclosure. In order to do that they need to use the new rock chip ARM systems. They need to begin making their own lenses again, or just steal Canon glass. Do it damnit just do it and win Pentax. Plus I like the name P E N T A X. It is very nice. Sorry I can't buy your stuff today. I had to dig up my house and coat it with stuff. May your cup size increase and your bra burst in happiness. Be well.
It the same camera and improved engineering with a different name. No biggie. You can shoot up to 80 mpxls. The world’s still catching up with the E-M5 mk 3
The video got more interesting because of the famous Panasonic autofocus 😀. The content and story aside I was also curious when Kasey will come back in focus. It is like the missing mystery element got introduced 😀😀.
He doesn't need to use Auto-focus, just set the focus manually and sit still. He obviously has Autofocus in the wrong mode, there are multiple modes on a Panasonic Camera
The only way for Olympus (OM System) to save themselves is to re-release a brand new OM mount FILM camera. They should take a long hard look at Leica with their M-6 re-release at $5K price point. If they made a new film camera, they'd have a product no one has, except for Leica, and if priced competitively, it'd be a winner. OM System should exit the digital cameras altogether, it's obvious at this point.
Are OM System capable to release a complete new camera after OM-1? This camera, as Chris Nichols and Jordan Drake says, EM-5 mark III was small changes. With the new OM-5 they didn't bother with changing, adding or upgradeing a headphone jack, USB-C PD charging, AF-C traking, added more subject recognition. Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji and Panasonice are advacing fast. It is a couple years more then OM Systems can not keep with the others.
I love my Olympus E-M5 III and if it comes to the Olympus brand name or the OM5 updates, I choose the mountain. Still I guess some people can't wait to get Windows 84.
Thank you for making this video. Have been using the original EM-5 until it won't retain date & time when I swap batteries and eyepiece fell apart. When I saw the specs of OM-5, I was unimpressed. Do I buy the EM5 MkIII at a discount? Just got a better deal on an EM1-MkIII.
2022. Everybody want to beat Canon after they did M50 II. OM with OM5. Pentax did it with new KF. DJI action 3 with the soft close focus (same sensor as action 2). Sony got ranted by Phillip Bloom and Jason Vong.
Did you even look at the camera? The OM5 has some outstanding features for a mid range camera. It is not supposed to be the system flagship, but for the advanced amateur and as a pro backup or lightweight carry about, it is ideal. Your expectations for it were ridiculous. Save them OM Systems' first new top of the line offering.
I saw this video post Wednesday -- but when I went to view it I got that "Private Video" error and only now it is available. Hmmm -- don't mess with "Olympus" or the Greek Gods will tear you up!!!!
@@RK-db4oqcheck the competition and see for yourself... no one was live nd, high res 50mp/80mp, live composite, pro capture. OM5 holds up very well to latest cameras from 1100-1300$ I am a happy EM5.3 owner and they added what I was missing (except from usb type c)
I actually think its a good camera. If you put aside the menu and usb (which i think they should have modernised), its a small 1.3 which is a stellar camera.
@@p.io7 no company adds innovation in mid range models. All the innovation is added in flagships and after 2-3 years is added in lower series. This is what is happening in OM5.
You have been blue-pilled by L Classic Neo bro 8:01 ;-) I feel disappointed with this camera release. It is essentially the same sensor as before but just added some features from the EM1 III (from a 2020 camera). And now in other camera news-Pentax release the 'brand new' KF...
6:46 OM SYSTEM. Yes it is uglier as a trademark. Olympus looked really good. What are they going to use? OMDS? OM System is one of the names from the 70s like Zuiko. We people from the 80s who remember the old film stuff are not the market for theses cameras (or maybe we are). It seems to be millennials in all their adverts but they know nothing of the old film cameras. So they are stuck.
@ 8:00 you ask why Olympus and other camera companies are doing this, which is making ghetto cameras. The reason is because a large number of Photographers have stated that "We have reached Peak Camera" which means, you cannot buy a bad camera today. Some of them also state that we have been in "Peak Camera" for about 10 years and you can buy a 10 year old camera and its still good enough to take photos........ Which simply is not true, as Petapixel points out the flaws in Fujifilm X-Trans as being garbage compared to bayer sensors. Plus there is Canon making the M-Mount and R-Mount lenses the exact same except having different mounts for their split mirrorless system to maximize "ZERO REVERSE COMPATIBILITY". And Pentax simply won't give us decent video specs since the K-5, though the IQ is great and lenses too. It is all the fault of the so-called professional photographers who make youtube videos and basically say that essentially we have reached "Peak Camera" and through that, they are telling Camera companies to stop innovating: There is no need to improve products, they have more than what THEY need (Video guys can get lost). Thats whats going on.
I believe the OM5 main target audience are those first time buyer. existing em5.3 users will need to wait longer. the current chip crisis will take some time to settle down.
Good points, but Fuji have managed to get processors, ports, and sensors that punt out the figures we're expecting. Why not OM? I think they just need to throw more cash at the problems they've got.
@@LexTNeville prior to the acquisition, olympus has many great lens design which are shelved. a lot of funds from JIP goes into realizing these lens. maybe OMDS will deplete their older sensor stock in OM5 for now. if one wanted an upgrade from em5.3 then I suppose OM1 is the way to go.
This video was lazy. You just repeated things that other videos have said about the camera without any regard for your own criteria- light-weight, superb IBIS, and fantastic colors. Instead, you said: Micro USB port! I expected more from you.... and I will add that I've never actually used the USB port for ANY camera I've ever owned.
Im not sure, should i buy more lenses at black friday for my OM1 (40-150+ 60mm macro) or switch to Sony A7III (Future saver) Im Lucky with the OM 1 but i have not much investet in Mft (800€ in lenses) Buy more lenses or should i switch?
Depends on what you do or look for in a system. If full-frame is what you want and you don't care about it's downsides and want the 'best quality', go with Sony. But if you care about size, cost, weight, good IBIS then MFT might still be your best option. You say you're happy with your OM1. So why are you looking at a totally different system ? Just because it exists and is supposed to be better ?
@@richardwl5773 First of all thanks for your answer I mostly photograph animals, landscapes, macro but also astro and whatever else I like I briefly had an A7II with which I was not satisfied and was very well advised in a shop, so I then left the A7III and switched to the OM1 (because of the costs and better for wildlife) but it's the fear that it might be Mft 1-2 years no longer exists and then I have to change That's why the thought of changing quickly if I don't have all the lenses I need/want anyway
@@t0992 If the mFT system as a whole is going to die, it doesn't go away in an instant. The stuff you have still works for many years. You don't have to switch the moment OMS goes belly up. You could spend years using your OM1 and slowly looking for another system. Or use it until either you or the OM1 falls apart. If OMS ever dies. And you don't have to get every single lens that's out there for mFT either. If you want to limit your investment for risk of the system not having a future, just get a couple of good lenses and you'll be set for at least 10 years. You have the 40-150 Pro ? Best all round zoom I ever had. Get some of the cheaper tiny primes. They are awesome and won't break the bank. If you buy into Sony or Canon, the risk is the same. Who's going to say they'll still be in business in 10 years. At least, mFT has a 10 year head-start in available mirrorless designed lensed. Canon and Nikon suffered a lot from not jumping ship to mirrorless soon enough. Their RF and Z mount are now slowly maturing. But still way to big and heavy for my taste. The sheer amount of small light gem lenses out there for mFT has no match. I've been hearing the mFT is dying story for more then 10 years now, and it still hasn't happened. And I don't really care. I've invested too much into it that I'm going to ride it until the end. Either it dies, or I die. If I go sooner, problem solved. If the system goes sooner, I can stretch it until I follow along and end up on the wrong side of the grass. Only when the moment arrives that I see the system no longer doing what I need it to do, will I start looking for something else.
Definitely don't switch! MFT format has a clear advantage when it comes to wildlife and macro shooting. But you can add a full frame body to your camera bag with one or two compact wide lenses for your landscape and street photography. Personally if I were to add a new body to my camera bag it would be Fuji X-T5, a 40MP APSC beautiful camera. Again not a switch but an addition.
@@p.io7 I've thought of that too but if I would choose a second camera then not an expensive camera fuji: I really like the retro concept (love the slower manual shooting) but an XT5 is way too expensive for me(max 700€ for Body) I would get a used A7II for astro+landscape (I had it for a short time) with 2-3 primes
This video deserved way more views. As always, your content is comedy gold. It's hilarious that even way back when Olympus was bought out, you said it was a Japanese sushi company ... you might as well be right, that camera conspiracy effectively turned out to be true lol. Been watching your channel since the days when you still used your Sony X3000 to shoot videos here lol. Great assessment of the industry as always and downright hilarious 10:30 "distract them with Like709" lol ...
Panasonic believed your background was more important, and perhaps, interesting than you were. Did it know something I don't? Can it see through walls? What was really going on back there? You can tell us ... in the next episode of "O M ... G."
Kasey -- just give up -- donate all of your current equipment to your nearest Canadian Photographer Orphan Home and buy a Pentax KF and be done with it!!!

@@p.io7 How can it be trademark infringement? They have it on the OM-1 and also they bought all the IP when they took over the company no? "OM would be a trademark too so your comment doesn't make sense.

@@p.io7 Still doesn't make sense - they will be selling the OM-1 with the "Olympus" name on it for a LONG time. Do we know for a fact what the exact time limit is? What are the terms in the contract or are you just guessing that? Yes, I know they just bought imaging division but that includes all of the "Olympus" branded cameras and equipment. Anyway, it would be a mistake for JIIP not to use the Olympus name even if they had to license it.
The grace period of using Olympus trademark was not disclosed to the public but it was mentioned that it is a temporary one. This whole operation is a big mistake imo and a sad ending of an iconic camera legacy.
Pixel to pixel mode is so noisy. And also in camera why they call it "color science" and not "color style" for example. Because there is no science about it
