Great diet if strength isn't a priority, definitely don't get any meaningful strength gains with this diet, same problem with Keto, tried both diets independently, 3 months apart, and was great for mental benefits I was after, but absolutely ruined my strength baseline. Hubermans version of eating works best for me now; Abit of fasting in the morning, low carbs first meal, and high carbs last meal, all whole foods, and mostly greens, get a balance of all health domains, i.e. endurance, strength, mental cognition, energy levels. I might add in Keto once or twice a year for a month was the original plan, but Hubermans plan is working well, 10km run is easy now, can bench my bodyweight, cold therapy helps with energy levels, sauna works great after a workout, planks work well after a sauna.

OMAD is working very well for me, although I will say I drag the meal out across about a 1-hour or so window. I am 53 and, with OMAD, I am losing fat while maintaining muscle tone by doing light weights workouts. Since I'm eating around noon, my food has time to digest, so I'm sleeping better. I do have maybe some chamomile tea before bed sometimes though. I notice that some damage I had from COVID is healing (e.g. nerve and digestive tract damage); and I think it's because my body can devote resources to healing rather than digestion overnight. I still get in plenty of nutrients and calories during my 1 hour OMAD intake, and, at eating time, I seem to crave healthy nutrient-dense veggies and protein sources and a little fat that usually is just the coconut oil I cook with and organic egg(s) from my hens. I also have "cheat days" about once per week when I eat whenever I want or because it's a special social occasion, and still having good results. So, the point about this all-about-me comment is that this guy Thomas is one of a few RU-vidrs who are literally saving my health and helping me reverse COVID damage and some effects of aging. I can't say thank you enough!!!

@Hippy2021
@Hippy2021 Год назад
@@lisajones6496 that makes sense. He extended one meal consume within an hour. Myself I do my meal longer than 2 hours, just because I can't shuffle all the foods needed for that one meal in a short time. Think about, you cannot consume 1500 calories food in one hour, plus after the whole day fasting you have to eat slowly, one cup bone broth to start with a coffee, wait half hour to get some cottage cheese and an avocado, wait another half hour to get some eggs, chicken, beef, shrimps, salmon..... whatever consider the main meal. Wait another hour for a yogurt, some berries as a dessert, just an example . Doing OMAD you should take your meal as a course meal, slowly to take in the foods. Taking a course meal dinner at a Michelin restaurant is around 4 hours at least, serving in small portions on different dishes in menu and that you have to eat slowly to appreciate the flavor and taste. Totally different than eating a double burger at king's

@@lisajones6496 I have always thought that it should be called otad .. " eating one time a day " not specifically one exact meal but one time , that is more accurate I think as most people can't eat all their calories in 1 meal but over say a two hour period have let's say a three course meal and maybe a shake or nutts then that is more healthy for long run I'd say, and I'd class that as eating one time not one meal

Me, too, though, I may be ready to try again at least a few days a week. I’ve done multiple versions and never found one that I wanted to continue. One of them I actually did for three months. People kept saying after a while you just got used to it. I never got used to it and I was so happy when I decided to give it up. But there are so many benefits that as I said, a couple of days a week could probably work. I’m wearing a CGM and would like to see some of the lower numbers I had about a year and a half ago, but I’m near 70 years old and diabetes runs in my family, so even though I have cut out a lot of spiking foods, the response isn’t what it was. I’m also going to incorporate more strength exercise.

So, me, Coach Tim got called out by Thomas for not being positive. Of all people, me, the positivity coach. 😂 I'm going to try again. I'm 49, so all of these newer health findings I fear can turn into longer term findings of problems as so many in the past have. However, the best we can ever do is use the most current information we can find to improve our health. Just being skeptical of everything helps no one. So let's be grateful Thomas brings us things like this so we can do just that until we know otherwise.

Are you doing any weight lifting? Strength is highly correlated with longevity. You weigh less than 98% of your peers. Is that your intent? Did you get any body fat measurements along the way? What do you think about the fact that Thomas recommends against daily TRF?
@hackfabrication139
@hackfabrication139 Год назад
@@oolala53 No dedicated weight lifting at this time, due to a really bad right shoulder joint, which will probably need surgery this fall. I ride my Peloton bike every morning (fasted), for 45 minutes. Tough trying to keep up with those 30ish age instructors, but I try my best to hang with them. As a cyclist (100 mile per week average in season), I wanted to get my body weight down. I'm currently at 130 lbs, which puts my BMI at 19.2 and in the normal weight range (per NIH). No fat measurements, as of yet. But, considering a DEXA scan next month. I have some loose skin, that is slowly disappearing. I'm hoping to lose most of it before June. For reference, I wear size 31 (waist), 32 (inseam) Levi 505 jeans. And they are loose fitting. Will probably drop to 30 waist, and move to a 511 style jean. My eating window is between 5pm-8pm. I'm normally in bed around 11pm. OMAD works for me. I am experimenting with a few other options as my weight gets stabilized.

@oolala53
@oolala53 Год назад
@shamelush You eat 1300 cal at one sitting? Personally, I think the term OMAD is misleading. To me, if the food is spread out over any more than 90 to 120 minutes, that’s not one meal. But no matter what you call it, if you are enjoying life better this way, mazel tov! Take it from somebody who lost 40 pounds 11 years ago and has maintained, it’s very common to go through different phases of ease and difficulty. When it’s going easy, it feels like it’s going to be that way forever. Almost anybody would lose weight on 1300 cal a day, but it is ironic that eating those calories in a shorter period of time can net less hunger.

@GreyBeard_Fit
@GreyBeard_Fit Год назад
Great topic as I have wrestled with this very matter in my late 40s. My approach has been essentially what you suggested as I typically do 16/8 or 18/6 about 3-4x per week and 20/4 or OMAD 2-3x per with usually a 14/10 or 12/12 interspersed 1x per week. The concern that I have regarding protein intake on 20/4 & OMAD days is that even if my total protein intake on those days is comparable to what I need and typically have on 16/8 or 18/6 days, the body can really only absorb about 20-30 grams of protein per sitting. Hence, it is likely that the surplus protein above 20-30 grams on OMAD isn’t contributing fully to the daily protein intake that is needed.

Thomas, ok I’d love to do OMAD or TMAD but how do I get 180g of protein (body weight) in my diet if the body can only synthesize ~45-50g per meal? At least that’s what I’ve heard. Does anyone know the answer to this?
@joegaines8826
@joegaines8826 Год назад
That is what I have heard, but lower only 30 gms can be utilized at one time. And the excess protein overflows into gluconeogenesis and becomes glucose. Isn't that why the body builders eat 5- 6 meals a day to get around this effect?

Does this replace the once-common stricture against consuming more than 30 grams of protein in a single meal? In the old wisdom, too much protein in one sitting could cause an insulin spike, and/or the excess protein wouldn't get used, got excreted as waste, overtaxed the kidneys, etc.. I'm happy to have all that not be true. But to get enough protein at my age on a two meal IF schedule, I'd have to consume 50 or 60 grams of protein per meal. Is that OK?

I cannot intake enough calories protein/fat/veggies, I’m lucky to get down maybe 40 grams of protein on a good day, but my normal calorie intake is around 500-700. I’m exhausted & I’m losing inches in places I’d like to keep but still have my fat on waist, hips, thighs. How do I get everything I need when I can’t consume much food/liquids?
@1Mannco

Double up on the calories and protein to keep muscle and losing fat. You workout enough and walk plenty which is good but maybe eat a good meal at 3pm with a good amount of protein and another meal about 4:30 or 5pm with protein and more veggies. But every 3-4 days have bigger eating window 6 hr 'day' and 2-3 meals. Eat a Mediterranean/Keto mix diet and don't go so low on carbs, just bad refined carbs. Eat good fruit and don't worry about those carbs and sugars there.

Eat way more meat, eggs, full fat organic dairy especially butter and animal fats; stop filling up on veggies. You need to make every mouthful count and you’ll get far more from animal products than everything else. There is every chance that it will help with any existing health issues too. You can combine it with fasting, however most carnivores tend to find they don’t get hungry and naturally eat less frequently. Don’t be afraid of animal fat, you will still lose weight and you will feel far more satiated than a normal carb/veggie heavy diet.

The key takeaway, at least from the way I am interpreting it, is that it is beneficial to stimulate mTOR to induce muscle protein synthesis, while ensuring that mTOR is not elevated constantly. Its about walking that fine line between eliciting a sufficient mTOR response to accrue and maintain the optimal amount of muscle, but to not constantly have the accelerator peddle pressing on mTOR, which will only provoke the ravages of aging that come with excess mTOR.
