I remember the critics remarking negatively when _Dazzle Ships_ was released and bemoaned the experimental nature of it. Then OMD released _Junk Culture_ and the critics did a 180 and criticized them for doing something commercial!! How do you win?? _Best to keep the critics guessing..._ Great review guys and thanks for reminding what a great album this is!!!!

A strong album with many classic OMD tracks and enough interesting experimentation, moving the band forward. Couldn’t stop listening to Talking Loud & Clear when this came out, that soprano sax solo is beautiful: still can’t believe they edited out the 2min 38 sec instrumental intro to the extended version on the Super Deluxe remaster a few years back 🙆🏼‍♂️

Been a fan of OMD since i first heard Electricity, I have seen them live more times than i can count here and in the US. I loved all the albums including the misunderstood Pacific age. Dazzle Ships is commonly seen looking back as the high point of their creativity. While i agree it's a master class of an album, along with Architecture and morality My personal favorite has always been Junk culture. Starting with the magnificent (The Angels Keep Turning) The Wheels Of The Universe as a one sided single free with the album, an experimental instrumental piece that harkens back to their earlier albums. At the other end of the scale we have the far more pop centric Tesla girls and Locomotion. The album is just full of classic tracks starting with Junk culture , Apollo, Never turn away. My favorite all time OMD song, Love and violence the first song on side b. Next we have the evocative Hard day Paul's Voice calling on his whole emotional range. Next we have All wrapped up, White trash and the album finishes on a real high with Talking loud and clear. I genuinely believe any of the songs on this album could have been released as singles and would have done well in the UK charts. April 20-2024 is record shop day and as a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Junk culture OMD are releasing the songs that were extra on the deluxe cd version of the album on vinyl including the highly underrated Garden city, how this never made it on to the original album is a crying shame.

As with the Human League, OMD produced 3 classic and outstanding first albums, and like THL for me followed up with some disappointing fare. Sadly not for me, but love the latest 4 albums - back to form!

After “Dazzle Ships,” it would have been difficult to predict that the opening track of their next album would essentially be a dub reggae rhythm, yet reimagined with synth-pop instruments. I believe this album doesn’t get the credit it deserves. It has a mainstream appeal but still keeps some avant-garde elements. The creative use of steel drum sounds and pitched voice sampling techniques was innovative for the time, and the album features some excellent songs. Additionally, the B-sides from the singles released from this album are pretty good as well - love the use of Fairlight on Angels of the Universe.

Junk Culture is among my favourite OMD albums, a brief juxtaposition of wild ideas and adept musicality producing some great songs - before having most of what made OMD, OMD smoothed away by Mr Hague leading to what we thought was terminal decline. How wrong we were! As such, a welcome return to form after Dazzle Ships. Don't get me wrong, Dazzle Ships has a clutch of great songs such as International, Silent Running and TROTT... but, for me, has far too much unlistenable filler... ABC Auto-Industry, klaxons, anyone? In my opinion, Dazzle Ships always appeared fractured, unfinished - missing two or three more solid tracks to present a satisfying whole where the sections of noise could find a place. It's become a cult, de rigueur for the 'I was there at the beginning' fans to claim the most difficult work as their own, although how they can insist 'This is Helena' is more than filler eludes me; same as those Ultravox muppets who insist Midge Ure wasn't a patch on John Foxx, simply because the 80's Ultravox was popular. I loved Junk Culture, from the bizarre opening to the bonkers Love and Violence and, to my mind, one of OMD's finest singles: Tesla Girls.... Loved the drum programming. Only downside for me was Locomotion, which I'm actually getting to like nowadays

Agree about Dazzle Ships. It is a poor album in some ways in my opinion though I cannot overlook that my late dad kindly bought it for me from a record shop in Preston on cassette when I was catching up on the back catalogue in 1987. I was pleased at the time and now he is dead it is a memory. junk Culture is excellent except for Never Turn Away, which is dreadful. I cannot believe it was a single as it was never going to be a hit. The version of Tesla Girls on the Blank and So Eighties OMD album is excellent. Love and Violence is something else and definitely one of their more off the wall creations! Junk Culture is an eclectic album and one of their best.

Hi! I'm sorry, I love O.M.D. but after the wonderful "dazzle ships", they lost their creative zenit...with this album begins their "shy era"...only the last albums sound better...From "Junk Culture" I can save only the first instrumental opening track (it still sounds "experimental")...and the beautiful great single " never turn away" that reminds to the "dazzle ships" sound! Of course, it's just my personal opinion! thank you for this video
