In episode 263, Drs. Ayesha and Dean Sherzai assert that omega-3 fatty acids are the most vital fat for the brain as they help maintain normal brain function. While the impact of omega-3 fatty acids may not be immediately apparent during midlife due to the brain's cognitive reserve, research indicates that their significance becomes more pronounced later in life.
Cognitive decline, for one thing, becomes noticeable when a substantial number of neural connections are compromised, suggesting that it's crucial to prioritize brain health during younger years.
But even in midlife, there are certain modifiable risk factors that you can monitor, such as blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, hemoglobin A1c, vitamin B12 levels, and vitamin D levels to protect your brain, according to Dr. Ayesha.

I work with people in their 30s and 40s and they just don't seem worried about their health. I'm 56 and I wish I'd known in my 30s what I know now.

What do you know now that you don’t know then? How can you be sure that supplement a would have made any difference?

a lot of unanswered questions here particularly regarding dosage for elderly and people with thinning blood. The best approach seems to be getting tested then supplement or not based on that result. Starting with too high a dose does not seem wise but certainly being aware of all numbers is important.

This was a very informative clip, thank you for sharing that way. With some much content sometimes it’s easy to miss some gems along the way. 😊

Simon, I appreciate this shortened clip especially hearing the dosage for older folks which I've been trying to figure out. What wasn't clarified to me are they suggesting 1000-1500 mg of algae every day for supplementation? And after listening to your excellent conversation with Professor Calder I am wondering if taking a DHA/EPA algae supplement with a large amount of DHA is worrisome for folks with narrowed arteries who take LDL lowering drugs. Might you offer any advice on this? I know the average PCP or cardiologist is not likely to know this nutritional advice.

Any concerns about the link between higher doses of Omega 3s and AFib.

No. Omega-3s thin the blood, which is the primary treatment for A-fib. Who paid for the study saying omega-3 was bad for A-fib? A pharmaceutical company selling a dangerous blood thinner for A-fib. My patients do not take pharmaceuticals for it. They take krill oil and are improving. No pharmaceutical reverses the problem.

Does omega3 supplementation help during pregnancy?

Are you joking? Are you asking if your baby needs omega-3, which is the ONLY source of EPA & DHA? Hint: Your brain is made out of them and plants don’t make them.

Can we get enough DHA and EPA on a vegan diet as we age into our 60's?

No. You'd need to supplement. You can use algal oil.

Do you eat fish every day like the Japanese do? If not, supplementation is beneficial, according to research data.

DHA and EPA is only found in algae and animal foods. No plants produce them.
