Omega MoonSwatch Speedmaster Reaction, 10 Best Summer Watches Under $50 To Luxury & Elvis's Watches 

I love the idea behind the MoonSwatch, but I really dislike the hype culture and the incessant flipping (scalping) that has come about in recent years. People need to remember this isn't a limited release. I'll be picking one up eventually, but ordering online and paying retail of course. No need to stand in long lines or pay exorbitant scalper prices.

This is a great business idea by Swatch & Omega. Question: Does a "cheap" $6,400 hesalite Speedmaster Moonwatch calibre 1861 devalue the $37,000 moonshine Speedmaster moonwatch calibre 3861 . No. The Moonswatch Speedmaster quartz is just another variation of the Speedmaster. It devalues nothing and spreads the Omega brand to a wider audience.

I like that OMEGA and SWATCH collaborated to bring out the MOONSWATCH, I don't feel that it lessens OMEGA by any means but introduces OMEGA to a new generation of watch enthusiast at a reasonable price point, a gateway watch if you will. I've never thought of any of my watches as seasonal.

This move by Omega x Swatch, is a friggin master course in marketing! ! ! Love it or hate it, it's a move that will be copied by all and the fact that these folks went and stormed the gates at dawn (starting the night before) was 45% honest collectors, 45% flippers and 10% just wanted to get one, that before were never able to afford the big brother.

I can see other brands following the lead of Swatch here if this is a big success. Imagine if TAG Heuer brought out a range of colourful, fun, plastic Monacos in the vein of the original Formula 1 from the 80s…

It's a brilliant marketing idea aimed at getting young people interested in something other than smart watches. It reminds me of when Purell gave out free coloring books about Mr. Germ and free samples of scented hand sanitizer to kindergarten kids who never thought about washing their hands or did so with a garden hose.

Any Casio will do the job in any summer situation. I like pop color and light colors. This is where I will go to. The Squale blue is the perfect summer color ! I’m also holding my breath for the blue COSC. My special one would be the Farer Markham: worldtimer with flashy blue-red-white colors. Big fan of it. For me, summer is sun, light-bright color and traveling ! 😎

I have a Speedy 1861 and I love this collaboration. In the Omega Speedy world there's already models that range between $5k to $60k+ and I don't think that makes owners of the $5k models feel like they have something less interesting. I think a lot of 'actual' Speedy owners will grab one or more of these MoonSwatches to add to their collection.

The moonswatch was an amazing idea! I’m not in any rush to own one, but it’s a great idea. It’s no different from an homage in my opinion. The Invicta Pro Diver never brought down and devalued the Sub Mariner. It gave people a chance to own a small something that most of us won’t be able to own.

I love the Moonswatches. I plan on probably collecting the whole set of them eventually. I didn't make any effort to get to a Swatch boutique, and I'll wait until they're available on Swatch's website, and buy them for MSRP (let's remember that mass production is pretty much Swatch's strong suit). I will also say that watching the FOMO freakouts, and the frothing and foaming of the watch snobs, was quite the circus sideshow, too. Well done, Swatch and Omega. I think they'll be a gateway watch to bring a lot of new collectors into the hobby.

20 days a go I was in the Omega shop in town thinking about a speedy....happy I saved my money, now I can get one for 250 bucks not the same but much cooler and more fun :-D

I absolutely love this. Any plan to put an affordable watch on the wrist of anyone is a win. The pre-emptive measures for scalpers with the limited sale per customer, the swatch branding on the face and being released by boutiques has not gone unnoticed. It also marks that potential start of a more adventurous time in the Swiss watch industry's marketing. The majority of the initiated seek watch collecting out and end up being, mostly, aspirational owners and account for maybe 10% of new watch sales. The majority of Swiss watch sales are people willing to spend their money on virtually anything and end up picking up a watch thinking it's only a trinket. These few hundred dollar watches might make their way to a younger audience, spark joy in an old collector, and maybe even increase the population of watch enthusiasts around the world. If in 10 years' time I can walk into my office and one of the new hires is wearing a mechanical speedy sparked by a $300 Swatch, it will have been worth every penny Swatch AG put into this project. If they're still wearing that $300 watch, they would still be wearing something imbued with over a half century of history. If we want to break down why this move makes sense. They are banking on the history of the Speedmaster and the prestige of Omega while the Bond films, Olympics and Project Adam still have sway. If we're being honest, Rolex has cornered the market owning almost a third of sales revenue in the industry. The market above Rolex is gaudy designs, exorbitant prices and some beautiful watchmaking that is nearly unobtainable for the average person. Omega is attempting to carve out it's own niche. For this they need to play not only to the watch enthusiast that will take note of METAS certifications, history and movements but also sentimental value in which a certain amount of accessibility is required for the the "untapped market". I think so often watch enthusiasts fall into the trap of being enthusiasts whereby they assume their knowledge is commonplace. The historical significance of a watch, the brilliance of a movement, and the rarity of a reference number are not the average consumer's reason to buy. After eons of fashion watch spam, unabashed design stealing, AD horror stories, and blatantly product placement; I'd have to say this is nowhere nearly as unsavoury.

My cheap summer watch would be Bulova Surfboard on the Orange Tropic strap. Love that watch. So fun! No. 2 inexpensive would be Yema Marine National. Honorable mention NTH Manta Ray Turquoise dial/Arnie. The Citizen Promaster Eco-drive 200 one cannot beat. Luxury for me: Oris Aquis Calbre 400, blue dial. And Seiko Limited Edition Sharp Edge 140th True GMT. White hemp dial, blue fixed outer bezel. Honorable mentions: Seiko Tuna Marine Master 300 on SS Band. Hamilton Pan Europe-another cool, fun dial. If I could afford it, True Luxuries would be: Tudor Pelagos and Omega Seamaster Pro 300. Nomination for next month topic: Best Limited Editions: inexpensive and luxury, vintage-or, best new releases for 2022.

At first I was horrified that this will downgrade my Seamaster 300 and Aquaterra. Then I thought, this is how I can introduce my two teenage boys to watches. I wouldn’t get them a real Speedmaster but I will buy them a Moonswatch. They look cool and it won’t break the bank if they loose it.

YESS!! I love the idea of having an Urban Gentry themed watch. That logo would look killer on a textured dial. Sign me up now!!

This whole MoonSwatch thing kind of took for surprise the watch community around the world, people felt the hype similar to when a new iPhone comes out (different scale of course) and it seems like if a Pandora’s box has been opened, is this the beginning of something for the watch industry? Happy to see I’m not the only one making that observation on the Speedy’s 12 o’clock marker. Imagine it’s always staring back at you when you look at the watch

I have fond memories of my first Swatch, given to me as a birthday present by my dad back in the day. I remember feeling very proud of my watch going to school. This Moonswatch brought all those memories back to me and of course will get one as soon as they are available online. I also think it doesn’t diminish in the least the value of Omega as a brand (I own three). On a side note my wife told me she loves the “Alaska project” one (Mars as I think it’s called) and my 18 YO son told he loves the Mercury, as his dream is to one day get the Dark Side of the Moon Speedmaster. It’s all fun, it’s it? Omega did something brilliant.

You will probably hate it but my favorite affordable summer watch is a Bulova surfboard. Absolutely love it!

I just love these stories about your watch histories. I always coveted a Speedmaster Professional. In 1988 I called a local Manhattan Financial District watch store and asked if they ever got in any used Speedmaster Professionals. He said sometimes amd took my name. Two months later he called and said he got one in and do I want it. I said yes immediately. It was $375. I asked him if he'd take $325? He said it was $375. Done deal. Still have it and I still love it, although I've spent about $1,500 through the years on maintenance. In 2015 I bought the Bulova Lunar Pilot bracelet model, barely used on Ebay for $285. It's on my wrist 80% of the time since then. Build quality is incredible, accuracy impeccable, and fits my 8" wrist. When I was a teenager my grandmother knew I loved watches. She said thst my grandfather has a bunch of watches in his dresser drawer, and to take a look. He had been in the hat business, and was always given watches as gifts, but used a pocket watch. In the drawer was a treasure trove, including 6 Rolex watches, which I had never heard of. When I graduated from HS, they gifted me a Rolex Datejust 2-Tone on a real alligator strap. I immediately went to a local Rolex reseller and bought their riveted, expandable Oyster bracelet. Still have it, although the 36mm case is a bit too small. I was later given a Rolex Bubble Back, which my grandfather had rigged to a chain, to use as a pocket watch. In 2002 my I asked my jeweler friend if he could get me an Omega Speedmaster skeleton back. He called Omega parts and conference me. The Rep asked how many we wanted? I asked how much are they, and how many they had in stock. She said, "27 and they are $25 each." I said we'll take them all! Sold almost all for between $275 and $1,200. Put one on my Speedy, but the ironic thing is that my original back is more coveted and worth more.

My sleeper pick for a luxury summer watch is the Zenith Defy Classic in white ceramic on a white rubber strap. I can’t think of a better adjective to describe it other than “baller.” And I think it’s perfect for summer. Super light, sporty, fun and the all-white could not be more summer-y. It just screams Miami. Plus it’s just a cool watch from a cool brand.

A big F*** You to the increasing exclusivity and snobbiness of the luxury watch industry; especially once they become available online. My dream collaboration: Hamilton and Citizen..

I have that Citizen Pro Master. It has fantastic lume and looks great on a beads of rice bracelet(Geckota). Big watch, but wears smaller than the 44mm suggests and on mine the second hand hits the markers almost perfectly.

In many ways, this is the biggest watch news since the Lange Odysseus. I know there have been quite a few things that have happened in the interim, but I don't think there's anything that got everyone talking so fast. Maybe the Rolex palm dial Datejust, Explorer two-tone, or the whole hooey with the Nautilus, but either way, this is really big news, and a whole lot of fun. I don't think it necessarily elevates Swatch or--more important--degrades Omega in any way, it is just a really neat thing that will totally stand on its own. In fact, I think this release will enhance the desirability of the Omega Speedmaster in general. I don't think that anyone who wants a real Speedy will view this watch as a substitute, but instead just a really cool thing to own.

I disagree that people would have waited for a cheap plastic toy instead or buying a genuine iconic watch. People still buy rolex at grey market inflated prices even with cheap fakes around.

The Citizen BN015X watches are nicknamed the "Prime" online (from Optimus Prime), so good call out. Have two colors and love them. The one on bracelet has a really, really good bracelet with diver extension.

Love the squale watch. In my opinion a blue dial makes for a great summer watch. My 2 summer watches are a Hamilton Pan Europ blue dial and my Tag Monaco blue dial, love them both.

Summertime in south Georgia means time spent on my tractor. There is no better summertime, outdoor watch for me than the Pro Trek PRG 600. I love the dial, the 3D indices and the positive display.

I am watching this tomorrow but so glad I clicked on it. I actually saw that for the first time on Saturday and I couldn't believe how many times I have stared at a Speedmaster and never noticed the erected 12 o'clock marker on the dial.

I love that Squale that Mark has. The blue and white bezel is great looking and that’s an awesome watch.

TGV, I think what reminds you of summer with the jelly strap on the f-91 is growing up in the very early 90’s in the UK, shops by the seaside used to sell bright coloured ‘jelly’ sandles to wear on the beach! Way before crocs. Great video as usual lads!

Very lovely video!! One correction I have to make though is that Elvis already owned a Ventura before the filming of blue Hawaii. In fact he owned one before he was even famous, it was just that Hamilton wanted more people to know that their watches were worn by the king. But actually Elvis loved the Ventura so much that he brought multiple variations for both himself and his friends and family. Cheers, and onwards and upwards!!

I would say yes to OmegaSwatch 100% If i am still a college student. It is a watch for the different target groups. A very good business strategy where the young nowadays have the buying power at that price range.

Nope...besides being budget-tight at the moment, I have my eye on another watch (a certain Seiko Presage) as the last addition for a *long* time to come, as well as shedding a few from the current roster. Totally agree with Mark although I'm buying a MoonSwatch as soon as I can order it online. But what has intrigued me the most is the business decision for creating this watch. But someone mentioned that Rolex is about to announce their 2022 watches. And no one is talking about anything else than the MoonSwatch 🤔

This was a really good move by both Swatch and Omega, every watch vlogger on RU-vid is talking about it. No one in watch community pays too much attention to Swatch offerings so it was easy to keep it secret. It’s not a limited offering so people just need to be patient and get it for retail, but then again the “pet rock” and the “talk to me Elmo” were things that people waited in line for and some actually fought for to have.

Anyone who knows anything about horology will NEVER confuse the moonswatch with a “real” speedy. You more than likely will never find the two in the same gathering, per your example 2:30 minutes in. This was an absolutely brilliant play by swatch. The moonswatch is a gateway piece to the more expensive lineup.

Gotta go baaaaaaaauy a MoonSwatch! A beater Speedmaster. Beatermaster? Speedbeater? No, probably not. Maybe I'll pop for a MoonSwatch at some point--can't decide what color dye I want to transfer onto my wrist. Or maybe I'll wait for the Seamaster collaboration: one for each ocean in a case made from reclaimed sixpack rings. My wristcheck: Eco-Drive Promaster Diver black on an ebay o-style bracelet.

Just got back from a trip to Florida. The Islander ISL-85 and my trusty G-Shock DW5600 were the two watches I took, and both got lots of wrist time. The G-Shock in the ocean and the Islander everywhere else.

I'd like to add to the list of Summer watches the Nomos Clubs (Campus or Neomatik). There are several that really stand out as "summer watches" with their colors and designs. There's also the Muehler Glashutte Panova and Promare watches that would be great summer watches, particularly the colorful Panovas with the textile straps.

An Elvis exhibition has just opened in Bendigo Australia with original costumes, his MG car, and so on. I am going in a few days and can only hope there will be watches. Excited!
