In this RU-vid video, we’re going to go over four of the most widely recognized sub-categories of the Omega Speedmaster collection, along with a few highlighted features that demonstrate how each model differs from another. The sub-collections we’ll touch on are the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, the Speedmaster MKII, the Speedmaster Reduced, and the Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph.
When Louis Brandt founded Omega in 1848, little did he know that the company would become one of the largest and most respected manufacturers in the world. The company now sponsors a number of sports and has had a relationship with the Olympics as the Official Timekeeper for the games that dates back to 1932. The brand created the first watch to visit the moon over 50 years ago with the launch of the Omega Speedmaster collection in 1957. The NASA-certified watch made history, and to this day, the company still manufactures flight-qualified wristwatches for manned space missions.
Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch:
The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is the purest expression of the entire Speedmaster collection. Its 42m stainless steel case protects a manual winding chronograph movement, featuring sub-dials at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. The matte black dial of the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch model is accompanied by a black tachymeter scale on the bezel and the watch features a Hesalite (acrylic) crystal, giving the timepiece a vintage-inspired design that will be welcomed by those who love the original Speedmaster model.
Omega Speedmaster MKII:
The Omega Speedmaster MKIII looks different from other Speedmaster models since it features a barrel-shaped case and a tachymeter scale located on the underside of its flat crystal. The first watch from this collection was launched in 1969 and originally featured a manual winding movement protected inside a 41.75mm case (a slightly smaller case size than the contemporary Speedmaster MKII models that now feature a larger case with a 42.4mm diameter). While the original version was powered by a hand-wind movement, modern Omega Speedmaster MKII watches are all powered by state-of-the-art, Co-Axial chronograph movements.
Omega Speedmaster Reduced:
As its namesake suggests, the 39mm Speedmaster Reduced, which launched in 1988, offers the same general style and functionality of the original Speedmaster watch but in more discreet and compact dimensions. The watch is therefore perfectly suited to gentlemen with slender wrists or ladies who like the bold and sporty look of the Omega Speedmaster. The chronograph sub-dials are located closer to the edge of the dial of these timepieces, and while the classic Speedmaster runs on an integrated manual-wind movement, Speedmaster Reduced watches are powered by automatic-winding modular chronograph movements.
Omega Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph:
Aside from being equipped with an escapement that reduces friction and allows the movement to be less reliant on lubricants, one of the main differences between the Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph watch and other Speedmaster models is the layout of the chronograph dials. The 3 o’clock dial combines the chronograph hours and minutes together on a scale featuring two hands, and a date aperture takes residence at 6 o’clock instead of the usual 3-register dial layout. These models are also available in other materials such as solid gold, ceramic, and titanium and they all boast larger, 44.25mm case diameters.
So, if you’re looking for a classic-looking Omega Speedmaster watch with vintage aesthetics that harken back to the watch’s first trip to the moon, the traditional Professional Moonwatch, with its matte black dial and Hesalite crystal is a timepiece that will make a statement whether paired with formal or smart attire. The Speedmaster MKII offers a different take on the famous chronograph with a barrel-shaped case and a tachymeter scale integrated underneath the surface of its glass. The Speedmaster Reduced watch is perfect for condensing the functionality and aesthetic of the Speedmaster into smaller dimensions, and for an Omega watch that boasts state of the art technology, the Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph timepiece promises unbeatable performance paired with much of that same iconic style.
