I tried it on many times at boutiques. Every time, it just didn't look all that good. Then one day I saw it on someone's wrist sitting across from me at a meeting table. It looked GORGEOUS, at once manly and luxurious with just the right amount of glint. I bought it a few weeks later and never regretted it since. There had to be something about a department store boutique lighting that made the dial look rough, and the vinyl wraps didn't help either. You need to see this in the metal, and you need to see it in the wild, being worn rather than displayed.
100% my experience. Tried it multiple times in different boutiques. I was doubting my decision but finally pulled the trigger because it had my sights for it for years. In my hands, it is a thing of beauty. I love it more every single day.
@@sanghoonlee5171 I guess it just appeals to some people more than others. I've seen it many times in the wild. It just doesn't do anything for me. Maybe one day it will, but I won't buy it until then.
@@LiamMulholland oh wow. I did not know that. I've been looking at the second hand market a lot more lately. I like the Schumacher Speedmasters for around $3.5k.
Easily my favorite watch I’ve ever owned. Out of all my watches it beats my Rolex, GP, Ap, Seiko. It’s just the perfect balance of tool watch, luxury and historical importance.
A real banger! Personally the heselite is my pick looks. Side by side it's a no brainer for me but it is a tasty movement to behold....the modern Speedy dilemma.. ...
I’ve owned the SS 3861 for just over a year now. It’s my only luxury watch, and I’m not mad about that. Never gets old to me and it’s a joy to wind every evening before bed for me!
In a thousand years your descendants will search in vain for any Patek, any Rolex, any Breitling, any mechanical watch or any watch at all in any museum or showroom. Buy a Speedy, explain its provenance to your children, tell its story, wear it with them, let them push the buttons, show them how it measures speed, and when they are ready, hand it down. All the other “watches” will be lost under the sands of time but your descendants will see their speedy’s brother on Aldrin’s wrist and at any important museum of human exploration. I grew up in the space race in the 60s. My wife gave me my Hesalyte 1861 on our 40th. It is not iconic. It is The Only Watch.
The JLC Geophysic 1958 in Platinum for the win. 100WR, shock and magnetic resistance. Great lume. Stealth wealth. Originally design to celebrate the 1957 International Geophysic Year.
Oh my goodness, the most iconic sports watch is the Rolex Submariner. Meaning that most people around the world will recognize it, the other watches that were mentioned are mostly popular amongst watch enthusiasts.
I've worn and enjoyed my hesalite 3861 daily for 3 years. Fantastic piece. Its the only watch I'll ever need. I recommend it to any collector. Get one.
If I were to get a Speedy, I'd get the Saphire Sandwich. If I'm going to spend that much on a watch, I want to see the movement, especially this movement.
I was not a fan of speedmaster until the moment I’ve tried it on my wrist. It has the right appeal to me, very pleasing to the eye and takes more time on the wrist than my Zenith Chronomaster sport, which is considered higher end watch in comparison with the speedy and has better build quality. It is not just the history, but the small details and improvements from model to model keeping design intact in general. 👍
I feel like I'm the only person that just doesn't understand the love for the Speedmaster. It just doesn't do it for me. It has a great story. I don't care for how it looks on the wrist. I watch every video like this hoping that something will change for me.
Well maybe you arent into Chronographs😂 cause Im not, but if I have to choose it would be Speedmaster or Tag Heuer Carrera. Its simple not overloaded like most Chronographs but not boring
Let's be honest, what we like is subjective, people will value aspects differently, story behind a watch, brand history, watch making capabilities, design, branding and marketing, popularity. Ultimately whatever you value is your preference and there will be something out there for you.
I bought a sapphire speedy last thursday. And man, I've owned a lot of swiss watches including Rolex but this speedy hits different. It's just perfect. It is so much more beautiful in real life than on photo's by the way. I can't name a single thing that should be changed or something that I dislike. I can't see myself letting this piece go ever.
I own and wear both. I find equal joy in both. And tbh, neither get recognised or commented on. But both deliver simple class to my mind. For me, ones the ultimate Dive watch, the other the ultimate Chrono.
So, ~ $7000 is the new retail price and ~ $3500 is the used price from about a decade ago and the price has really increased? Those are two different markets from two different time periods dude. You can't compare them at all. What's the used price now vs the retail price now?
I love this watch although I do think the bracelet is extremely uncomfortable since the links are rounded on the inside and always leaves marks on my skin
I have a Speedy 57 and I'm so happy with the "flat link" that come with. I saw a video where a guy change the stock bracelet on the last speedmaster with the flat link from speedy 57. Maybe your problem will be solved
@@Manu-pn9vn100%. I’ve been waiting for Forstner to restock on their flat link bracelet so I can finally wear this watch in comfort! I love the look of the flat link as well!
I love mines but I do find the bracelet uncomfortable since the links are rounded on the inside and always digs into and leaves marks on my skin. Does this happen to you?
Will always be my favorite watch. My 3861 Sapphire Sandwich is the prize in my collection. I previously owned this Hesalite version, as well, but I ultimately decided I neeeded the SS
Wrong. Not even close. Wasn't even popular unil last 10 years or so, when hype train arrived. Having bought into hype train myself, I was left going…is this it? The best Rolex? Its gone now, I keep my subs, because they are pure class, but the daytona…a zenith copy at best.
@@gavinwhite9743 Subs are classic for sure especially with glidelock. The plain no date sub is the one for me. Zenith is a great brand. Chronomaster Revival Shadow is my favorite and they just came out with a matching bracelet for it.
why not consider IWC Pilot's Chronograph 41 as a competitor? Similar price range. I know the IWC doesn't have a tachymeter but it's still a high end chronograph from a luxury brand.
I’ve had this one for 18 years. Last couple years it hasn’t left the safe. I just can’t stand its poor water resistance. A TRUE sports watch should at least be swimmable. I mean really. As an icon? Yes it’s iconic. But since I tend to go in water much more frequently than I go to the moon it’s not a daily true sports watch to me. One of these days it’ll go on the sale block.
@@likeDC79 How so? 50 metres is far deeper than most will go with their watches unless they are diving. 50 metres doesn’t just mean splash proof with Omega. The Speedmaster is rated for swimming. Take this info directly from Omega: “All current OMEGA watches are water resistant to the depth defined by the model specifications, provided that the components ensuring the water resistance are intact. This means that an OMEGA watch that is water resistant to 30 metres can be worn for swimming at depths of up to 30 metres underwater for extended periods without restriction.”

I have a Sub Date (16610) and never thought I'd be drawn to a Speedy, but I tried one on last month and I can't get it out of my head. I may have to pull the trigger on a pre owned sandwich. I've read the comments about the bracelet, but honestly I found it to be as comfortable as the president bracelet on my Day Date.
What can be said about this, that hasn't been said before! My eyes always first go to this first for some reason, even when placed against MUCH higher valued pieces.... It's the ultimate "One Watch", the ultimate "Strap Monster"... The entrance to the luxury watch, Rabbit Hole.
@@jeffmalm9708 200m water resistance is quite literally unnecessary for a non-dive watch. The Speedmaster can safely be worn 164 feet under water. If you plan on going deeper then wear a dive watch.
Definitely not. A watch that doesn’t have proper water resistance is at best a dress watch. To add on, it is too huge for most. The history of this watch is also now questionable given that US may have faked a moon landing. So all in all, I don’t think it is anywhere near the best or perfect sport watch. However, it is indeed a nice looking chronograph watch . Will be better if water resistance and sizing are enhanced
