Hi Nick! I completely agree with you about having to add more soap into my synthetic brush in-between passes. I don't have an animal hair brush to compare it to but from watching your previous videos it doesn't want to hold onto the lather. I am about 1 month new to safety razor saving and it is definitely the way in which I will shave here on out. Thanks for the great videos! Ryan

I have had this brush for several months and it performs very well. Easily generates a lot of lather with very little effort on both soft and hard soaps. I have not lost a bristle as of yet. The only problem is that the handle is plastic and appears to be low grade plastic. It began to crack after a few weeks of use. It is still on my rotation of synthetic brushes because it is a top performer. I recommend paying a little more and getting this synthetic knot on a better quality Omega handle - a resin/acrylic or wooden handle.

I have a parker synthetic brush and I love it. Soft yet has enough stiffness to work up lather on hard soaps.

Great video. I own pretty much every synthetic brush (all the different fibers, not the different handles) and I find that most do not hydrate the lather well; as you pointed out the synthetic fibers release the lather because it releases all the water as soon as it splays, because it doesn't hold water in each individual hair like animal hair does. From all of the brush fibers I've used, I have found the Plisson fibers, the Ubersoft, and the new Duro (from Crown King) are the only ones that actually absorb and hold water well like animal hair does. Most of the other knots like the Muhle Silvertip Fibres, just do not hold water because each hair is like a nylon string and repels water. Thanks for posting.

I agree, Plisson (L'Occitane p.ex.) performs much better than Mühle's 2.0 synth, though I don't think the fibres actually absorb water as if they would, the brush would retain heat and it doesn't.

My first brush was an Omega Synthetic and I love it, not as pretty as the one you got I got one of their cheaper ones where the bristles aren't dyed to look like badger it just has white bristles and it got better in time when the bristles got some wear.

Great video Nick. I was a huge boar brush guy, but have converted to synth brushes back around Christmas time. I use the muhle black fibre synth on a daily basis and also like the Edwin jagger silvertip fibre. I like to get a good splay from my brush and the black fibre performs great for this task. When I switch back to my boar I find the lather dries out because the boar keeps absorbing the water while it sits on the counter while I'm shaving. I get much creamier lather with the synth.

Very nice video! I've recently bought my first Omega brush and first synthetic hair brush. It has a barbers maypole style handle, really excited for it to arrive. I'm a bit more at ease now after watching your video. Thanks from the UK!

the best brush on the market today my Simpson Trafalgar's T-3 better then boar cheaper in the long run no break in, no need to soak it all day, ready to use, no weekly cleaning, no brush stand needed, easy on your face biggest brush at that price point .my I mic it its 29mm.' it's like buying a $275 badger hair brush, no cleaning the brush, no need for a brush stand, fast drying time, well not fall apart like a badger hair or boar can, cheap to buy, I have owned it for 5 years with no hair loss with no problems wheelchair Larry Merry Christmas

Nick I have a question, first however I want to say I Love your videos! Very well shot (I enjoy the camera angle you set up) and very informative as well! I’m a total newbie to wet shaving and Safety Razors. I’ve narrowed down my first razor (Merkur 34c) and I’m looking to finalize my choice in my first brush. This is a contender at the moment, as is the 599 Omega Silvertip. Which I understand is quite small. I don’t have especially coarse hair, and I’ve been prioritizing comfort of the brush on my skin. My goal is to stay under/ around $60. I did see your other videos about the boar brushes by omega and the other company you recommended, however I was thinking boar hair may be more rough on my skin ? I do tend to have somewhat sensitive skin. Long story long (lol) do you have an opinion on this brush vs the Omega 599? Ps- keep making great videos, I enjoy learning from you and watching them. -Jason

I have a Bluebeards Revenge Synthetic brush which i think is about 24mm, great brush that I have no plan to replace with any other. Interested in some of the knots that Larry @ whipped dog has as I would like to restore a few old handles. I chose synthetic as I'm vegan and using real hair (boar and badger) was not an option, I believe horse hair is gathered during the grooming process so that's a possibility too.

Just a quick thought for a vid. I don't know if you go all out with a "shave den" set-up like you see in the forums. If you do, considering you'll be moving, it would be neat to see a video planning and implementing your "den". Personally, I'm not really into the collecting aspect of wet shaving, but for some reason I find the posts of how people set up their space pretty interesting (maybe it's because I'm cheap, I can collect vicariously through those posts lol).

Nick, I really enjoy your videos, I look forward to the product reviews. How long do you lather your face in real time? I wonder if i'm working the lather long enough.

I have the synthetic Omega Hi-Brush and the Omega Syntex brush. The Hi-brush is still being broken in, It does splay a little easier over time. I've actually been a little rougher with this brush than normal and it seems to work better. The cheaper white bristle Syntex is a lather monster and needs no break in at all. I took the Hi-brush on a trip to humid Mexico and it dried very quickly,.... great for travel !

That brush appears to have a better splay than my less expensive, Omega S-10077 synthetic brush.

Yes they are indeed. For the money they are worth it. Also most of the old timers preferred boar. Its funny I've been eyeing that same syn brush that you reviewed, It is a pretty brush! I also am considering the larger sized Georgia model too. That handle with the gold trim is hard to resist! Do you have any of the collectibles like the Italian flag or multi laminate handle brushes from Omega? One last question, how do you feel about Semogue brushes?
@GeorgeCampbell1964

I have one synthetic and I'm not blown away by it. I've recently started using boar hair and my Semogue SOC (boar hair)has out did anything I've ever had! I have several Omegas and the Semogue has a much hair than the Omega.

I have to shave once or twice a day for my work. I wanted a brush that wouldn't be almost constantly damp, because my boar brush kept developing a mildewy odor. The synthetic brush solved the problem.

I have a Mühle synthetic and boy does it whip a beautiful lather. I think synthetics are a good way to get a big knot for not a lot of money.

Do you know if animal hair brushes are more prone to bacteria? just wondering.
@bryanbeasleigh3637

+David Childers Brushes should be given a chance to fully dry between uses. Best way to accomplish this is to have a rotation of multiple brushes . Brushes that are always wet would tend to harbour bacteria, mold, etc.

Nick, I bought a couple of Omega boars one for myself and my son. Had them less than one year, mine was older yet both developed cracks in the handles? Otherwise, the brushes were just fine. Any ideas?

Hi! The lather cover brush handle so quick. Is it all synthtic brushes desease or you pick up too much water?
@HughRogers609
@HughRogers609 9 лет назад
Just a picky point. While he prefers to load up soap with a really wet brush, this is preference only and not necessary. Often you can drown the lather with water this way, if not used to using soaps and brushes. You can get the same results without the mess and waste by getting most of the water out, loading and adding water as you go. Synths make rather really quickly, so it makes no difference to the end result. There just way less mess. I have come to prefer synths because they don't hold onto water, and they make a great, wet slick lather and far quicker thna boar or badger. They dry in no time at all too.

I had one of these. Really nice brush, but the bristles had so much spring and backbone that it ended up being too scratchy for me.

What size knot is that? I found that 21mm, like in Mühle Cosmo, just isn't enough for great face leathering. It might also be due to other variables but L'Occitane Plisson, just a bit bigger, doesn't have that problem.

I have this , but it in no way compares to my Edwin Jagger or Plisson synthetics. Yes there s a higher price for either of the two I mentioned, but both perform better & are higher quality IMHO.

My Omega Pro Boar hair had to be reloaded too when it was new. The synthetics are close to boar hair when new but after boar breaks in I think it even beats out badger hair.

You need styptic on your thumb. Youve had that in a bunch of videos and youre not an auto mechanic. Dry cracked skin or something else? Great review as always though. Thinking of trying a synthetic. Have to compare to the Plisson from L'Occitane.

Blimey, you dropped and left your brush to soak right (if not, in) next to the drain hole @ 3:33 ... I mean, don't you spit and all that (heck, its a drain hole where all the gunk goes to), and then there is your brush right next to it... All the bacteria and things might then land on your face... :\ Just sayin'.
