One of the greatest songs of all time! No lie, and Billy Paul just brought it all together with his vocals. This song in the 70s was off the charts and it’s still great all these years later. I also saw Billy Paul in person do this song in a nightclub in Boston in 1973, that was sensational… It was a birthday present from a dear friend and is this song takes a hold of you… multiple standing ovations

I am so glad that you guys are reacting to Billy Paul. Wow, what a voice. Again, another example of the voices and music compositions of the 70's-80's. Now that you are reacting to Billy Paul I suggest that you listen to "This is your life" by Billy Paul.

Number 1 song in 1972. It's always been one of my favorites. Daryl Hall (Hall and Oates) also does a great cover of this song.

You two would have loved the '70s, it's a great song and there were plenty of ones like that during that decade. I suggest that you check out 'The Chi-Lites' (pronounced Shy-lights) two of their songs in particular, 'Have You Seen Her' and 'It's Time For Love', for a faster more dance type of track by them, please check out 'You Don't Have To Go'.

Billy used to live around the corner from me and I would say hi to him whenever we crossed paths. He was a very nice man but I had no idea he was a famous sing till he passed away. I still exchange greetings to his wife when walking their dogs while I walk mine, she is an equally sweet woman. Billy was a great singer and a great guy.

Not too long ago was in a nice little antique store, I was the only shopper and this song was playing when I walked in, I was quietly singing along and loved it, feeling so lucky to hav3 walked in at the right time …… them it played again, and again…. And again!! I think the owner of the sop loved it too😉. I could listen to it all day long too!! So happy you got to react to it! Now go listen again!!

1:22 melody snippet from "once I had a secret love.." The writers/producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff say that the song was based on a real experience. There was a restaurant across from their recording studio in Philly where they would take their dinner breaks. And every day they'd see this couple meeting at one of the booths. They'd come in separately and leave separately.
