One of the music industry's great tragedies... they hit it big right after lead singer Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose at age 28 (and the band called it quits immediately thereafter). "What I Got" was their first huge airplay hit, followed immediately by "Santeria", "Wrong Way" and "Doin' Time". However, if you do another Sublime song, it has to be "Badfish". It has a cool, smooth, reggae vibe that will make you want to kick back on the beach!
While the band was really over, without Bradley, they really did not call it quits. There was the Long Beach Dub All Stars which had the surviving members plus a others who guested on Sublime tracks. There was also Long Beach short Bus aka Shortbus. Currently (before the pandemic)they still toured with a new singer. Called Sublime with Rome. But it will never be what they were originally.
Love Sublime. RIP Bradley. “Smoke Two Joints”, “Garden Grove”, “April 29, 1992”, “Badfish”, “Date Rape”, “Santeria”, “40 oz. to Freedom”, “Wrong Way. So many great songs.
Dr Walker we are talking about music. We all have our struggles in life. Nobody is perfect and way too many great artists have been taken way to soon because of addiction. Maybe you shouldn’t be such a prick about something you know nothing about. 🤷🏼♂️
If you like "Caress Mi Down" you should check out the original by Clement Irie and look into the Sleng Teng riddim or go right to the source Under Mi Sleng Teng by Wayne Smith or to the instrument that made it the Casio MT-40 (Rock Rhythm setting).
It blows my fucking mind how many people today have never even heard of Sublime. They were such a legendary group. They were _huge_ in their day, and their lyrics are extremely real and relatable to a lot of people, back then and today both. It’s even more mindblowing because everyone I’ve seen react to it loves it and is always smiling by the end. So it still vibes with people, obviously. It’s so weird that they aren’t a household name.
More sublime plz. This band was the music of my childhood. "Santeria" "wrong way" "april 26 1992" just to name a few. Edit: I think this is the most likes ive ever gotten on a comment. Thanks guys.
Been waitin’ on the Sublime discovery. The reason the sound is hard to describe is because it’s distinctly their own. There are influences of rock, reggae, ska, pop, rap, punk, blues, Cali surf, and Spanish language music. I consider the death of Bradley Nowell to be one of great losses in music. I feel like they had so much more to say.
Not gonna lie, when it got to the part with Lou dog I actually teared up. There was definitely some more left in the tank, and it hit me that not just the people who were around don't get to experience it, but for everyone who comes along and discovers the band for the first time, they don't get to see where this thing would have gone either, and that's a real f%^&*(@ shame.
Don't get me wrong I'm a fan but many fail to realize that when it comes to original material Brad was not the strongest. However he was extremely good a cutting and pasting together semi obscure songs and adding a little to the mix.
Bradley had the rare talent of being able to find the best in all genres of music, bring them together, and weave them, effortlessly. A true talent. Ska, alternative, rock, rap, hip hop, soul, he could do them all. Miss you, Bradley. Sublime was a BIG Gen X group. We remember.
Did they ever perform any songs from this album live before Bradley’s death? I would assume so since albums are usually recorded months ahead of release.
I forgot how much I love this song. It really makes me smile. I’m sure you’ll do Santeria eventually, but another beautiful Sublime song is Rivers of Babylon.
The self titled album is completely underrated. One of the best albums ever. Bradley literally made an album where it was impossible to press skip on any song. It was an album which you could listen to it all the way through and not find a bad song. My favorite band ever. They're simply underrated and what their band name is all about, SUBLIME. They were a band that literally played almost every genre from hip hop all the way to dance hall, punk rock, reggae, ska, and thrash.
Sublime has a distinct style, they're a mixed bag that is immediately recognizable. Ska may be the genre, but you really can't put them in a single genre box. Next song: *Santeria*
It's a mixed bag because almost none of the material is original. Most are one of the following, a cover, a cover of the lyrics over sublime music or over lengthy samples. I like the band but they are more cut and past than original material.
@Stacey Capito would Sublime be considered Ska? I thought Ska distinctly required the use brass horns most notably trumpets. I remember them getting categorized as hip -hop and sometimes rap/rock. Interesting.
@@donaldjohnson1148 I don't think Ska requires horns, but they are sometimes included. I think of Ska as a sub genre of calypso/reggae with a rock beat. I'm not an expert by any means, just took some classes around the same time the lead singer passed away, which prompted some interesting discussions.
@@scapito Huh, interesting. My experience with it was mostly the ska-punk wave that followed around the same time and they were just littered with horns, no expert here either. Cool. 👍👍✌✌
Doing Time, Smoke Two Joints, April 29th 1992, Badfish, Caress Me Down, Garden Grove, and KRS-ONE are all awesome. Also, their song Saw Red features Gwen Stefani. Don't Push is another good one. Bradley Nowel was the lead sing and he died a couple of months before their breakthrough album released.
Sublime is a Ska punk band. A lovely mixture of Rock and Reggae. Besides Sublime, my two other favprite bands of this genre are The Mighty Bosstones and Fishbone, who opened up for Beastie Boys at my very first concert.❤
This song was played at my nephew’s funeral. They released hundreds of balloons when it began to play. He was 19. I will always love this song and hold it close to my heart. Thanks for reacting to it, guys. ❤️
Their best songs aren’t the most family friendly of lyrics: 40oz to freedom, smoke two joints, and date rape are exactly what they sound like and all execellent
Thanks for this one! Sublime was LA. A mix of hardcore punk, reggae, ska, hip-hop, and mexican ballads. For something hard, try "New Thrash" or "Ebin", for something groovy try Doin' Time. Bradley, the singer, died of a heroin overdose. Their music IS the 90s for me. Personal. Fave 5446
Also, you will find SMASHING PUMKINS, very cool, interesting, and everything. The intro to Melancholy and the Infanite Sadness is a beautiful piano solo which will melt your heart and hold your sole
I’ve requested them several times. Fallen on deaf ears. Come on guys. You’re doing all the other big 90’s bands. They are right there at the top. How about starting with Mayonnaise? Several other reactionist have done it but no one as big as you guys.
Sublime is one of the 90s great bands, and one of rocks bigger tragic stories. They combined rock with raggage, hip hop, and punk, and were very talented and charismatic. I would recommend Badfish for Amber, and Seed for Rob. Huge fun with this band! Their albums 40 oz to Freedom, and self-titled Sublime are front to back absolute summer classics! Definitely do more Sublime!
They actually opened for Chili Peppers back in the day! This is "ska"... A fabulous blend of rock, reggae, punk, funk, rap... They were amazing. Ska was the amazing fusion sound of the early 90s. RHCP, Sublime and No Doubt all sortof had this vibe. I lived in SoCal for 20 years... And those three bands just take me back to the beach... 🥰
YAAAAYY!! Sublime is sooo great! RIP Brad. They are a cross of several genres of music, mostly ska, punk, reggae rock mix. There are SO many awesome songs in their catalogue. Please go down this rabbit hole.
Their song Santeria is real fire! Sweet bass reggae bass line with Long Beach, CA flare. Also Garden Grove is a perfect one to add on the reaction list. The official music video for that song really shows the culture of people in the neighborhood in California 💗
When my kids asked me what genre Sublime was I had to think for a second and all I could come up with is…they made their own. Sublime literally was a genre. Lol God this takes me back to the BEST times.
@@rafterman5072 ~IKR?! There's one specific song that I can't think of the name of I can only think of the beat in my head and it's driving me absolutely mad 😭
Yea! I love Ska! There is so much to listen to in this genre. My fave is the English Beat. Please give them a try - Mirror in the Bathroom was a biggie for them.
This is a very innovative record but it ain't ska the beat who you referenced are so are selecte r ska was a mix of Jamaican reggae started by English skinheads/sued heads thank you
@Denise Crawford I obviously know that when 2 tone broke I was 16/17 an ideal time cause I was just starting to go out and enjoy myself plus I was only 35/40 miles from Coventry which was the epicentre of it jerry dam me rs to me was the main man just my opinion .Thank you
The genre was called ska, heavily influenced by reggae, hip hop and some punk and folk. Memories of long summer nights and girls dancing to these guys around the car, the camp or the bonfire, on repeat.
This song is such a bop. Seriously. I bought this song recently as I had forgotten about it. It’s just so 90s but I can’t explain why. It just has a chillness that I only hear in 90s and early 00 music
I met this band because of a song called "Caress me down" and during the song they talk about my country Costa Rica when they were here surfing and drinking alcohol, they stayed In my town in a very central hotel, and all the people here always talk about it, we are honored that those from "sublime" talk about their time here.
Those rare moments when we get to see someone hear sublime for the first time.. one of the most tragic stories in music.. the genre is technically “Sublime”. Most of their music was record in dope houses, occasionally breaking into studios.. he left us weeks before their breakout album KRS-ONE on the 40 oz. album changed my life… their cover of stepping razor, cisco kid, STP (all off of Robbin the Hood album) were recorded mostly on 4 tracks is various houses, just an amazing testament to the genius this world couldn’t contain I’d love to see a “full album reaction” to 40oz. To Freedom
Blown away that you hadn't heard of Sublime! So many great songs. Sublime - Waiting For My Ruca and Santeria Lead singer was Bradley Nowell. Sadley he passed away in 1996 of a heroin overdose while on tour. Request Please - Beck - Loser
