Marc Bolan, the leader of T Rex, was such a talent during his brief time in the seventies. He led the way for the Glam Rock era and the many bands in the UK that followed. He died very young in a car accident with his long time girlfriend. Even to day he has a very loyal following, people who still idolise him for his music, his style and his honesty where music was concerned. Try Ride a White Swan or Hot Love.

His girlfriend, Gloria Jones, who was driving, survived the accident. She was a successful singer in her own right, with the original version of Tainted Love, later covered by Soft Cell.
@biff9999
@biff9999 3 года назад
@@jamespasifull3424 Quite right, she was the driver of the Mini, and survived with severe internal injuries a broken jaw, broken leg and broken arm. She definitely did NOT die in the accident; it is a disservice to her and the son that she and Bolan had together to make this sort of statement. The son they had together, Rolan, who was two years old when his father died, had a godfather named David Bowie, who later supported Gloria and Rolan, and paid Rolan's way through school, supplementing a small annual payment from Marc Bolan's Jersey-based trust, Bowie never spoke of this to anyone publicly. The reason that David Bowie supported them financially is because even though Gloria Jones and Marc Bolan had a long-term relationship and a child together, Marc Bolan was still legally married to June Child, whom he married in 1970 and left when he started his relationship with Jones. He had never gotten around to divorcing June Child and so Gloria Jones basically got nothing when he died, it was all in trusts that had been set up previously. Gloria Jones and Rolan Bolan were living in poverty for several years until Gloria was able to get back on her feet again financially. Later, Rolan got a degree in Fine Arts (quietly paid for by Bowie), modeled for a while for Tommy Hilfiger, and started a music career of his own. Even later still, he got a substantial amount of money from a separate discretionary trust when June Child passed away. Rolan Bolan is now 45 years old. However, and this is simply amazing, considering how long ago Marc Bolan died, the bulk of his money is still in that discretionary trust, because of the way the trust is worded, and that's estimated to be somewhere between $38 million USD and $60 million USD. His only son cannot avail himself of that money. Gloria Jones is still alive and is now 75 years old.

I remember my older sister waking me one night after returning from a T. Rex gig in London. She was in tears telling me how Bolan had sat on the edge of the stage and sung while looking into her eyes. Being a 12 year Slade fanatic, I told her to f*** right off. Now, nearly 50 years later, I have adored T. Rex for years and can't imagine how I didn't get it. Still haven't told my sister that I like them.

At the 1972 Xmas School Disco,. people lost their minds to "Solid Gold Easy Action." The internet and youtube's algorithms will make sure it doesn't die. Examples - my daughter's high school choir did a Beatles medley for end of year in 2012. Black Sabbath / Pink Floyd etc. still have a huge following today, Mainstream music today is too timid to try new sounds or styles, so the kids look elsewhere for fresh stuff.

Interesting aside, Rick Wakeman did keyboards for the song and was paid almost nothing for the gig (9 pounds). Wakeman later played keyboards for the band Yes, and went on to a successful solo career. You should check out his album Journey to the Center of the Earth." The interesting bit is that when T-Rex did the song for Top of the Pops in 1971, they got Elton John to "play" the piano.

@Turtlenest1 Those are Congas. I have a pair sitting in my living room. Both Congas and Bongos are "single" headed. However, Bongos come as a "pair" of drums that are "permanently" attached to each other via a wood "bridge" and are much smaller - often held in the lap and/or between the knees. Congas can come single but are usually in pairs and even triplets, but they are not "attached" to each other. Pairs can be hooked on a single stand that holds them side by side, although the stand he is using in this video is different from mine. I also have Djembe, Ashiko and Doumbek drums as well as some other percussion instruments. A Djun Djun would be an example of a double headed drum - I don't have one of those. Congas are barrel shaped, Bongos and Ashikos are funnel shaped, Djembe and Doumbek are more or less (for lack of a better term) hour glass shaped - with one end being larger than the other, and a Djun Djun is cylinder shaped and is the only one out of those drums that is double headed. ✌👍🙂

For the most part songs on the mainstream radio were largely nicey nice let's hold hands, happy love songs (yes there were harder acts out there) So when this came out with swag and an element of raunch and attitude, with lyrics "your dirty sweet and your my girl", they jumped into a class of their own and iconic status. Today might be seen as passe but then it hit hard. This song was an important lesson your rock music history journey. That is why people suggested it. Keep on rockin

Marc Bolan - born Marc Feld - started out as a very ethereal and faerie folk style singer. He played in a band called John’s Children (only one minor hit - Desdemona!), before founding Tyrannosaurus Rex, which became a cult band for a few years. Then he moved into Glam Rock with a new partner (Mickey Finn), and drums and bass, changing the band name to T Rex. He battled weight problems before reinventing himself , and sadly died in a vehicle accident in 1977, when the Mini, driven by his girlfriend, collided with a tree.

'I'd hate to go now,' said Marc Bolan to his old mate, Cockney Rebel vocalist Steve Harley, as they received the news of Elvis Presley's untimely death in 1977. 'I'd only get page 3...' - In fact, the death of the former Marc Feld was splashed across the front pages of the tabloids not long after. His rise from acoustic guitar troubadour to one of Europe's biggest pop acts (this was the 2nd of four number one singles in the UK) was a triumph of self-belief over scepticism. America never succumbed to his camp stylings (he's considered the Godfather of Glam Rock) but he and his backing back T.Rex were recently inducted into the Rock & Hall Hall of Fame - long overdue...

Sadly Marc Bolan, who also played guitar on Electric Light Orchestra's 1973 album 'On the Third Day' (give that one a listen), Died in a car crash in 1977 shortly after T Rex's last album was released.

This was also covered by The Power Station which was an Outside Project of Duran Duran. The Members were Tony Thompson (RIP) The Drummer for Chic who never got the recognition he so richly deserved, John Taylor (Bass), Andy Taylor (Guitar), and Robert Palmer (RIP) which was a major comeback for him.

That's Mickey Finn on the Congas. Howard Kalyan & Mark Volman on backing vocals. T Rex was fronted by Mark Feld (stage name Marc Bolan). T Rex is the shortened form of Tyrannosaurus Rex which was the name of the previously acoustic duo Marc Bolan & Steve Peregrine Took. When Took left, Finn took his place and soon after Bill Legend (Drums) and Steve Currie (Bass) joined the band and the early form of T Rex was born. Get It On is a track from the album Electric Warrior, an outstanding album from 1971.

Marc Bolan started glam rock. They were lip sinking for a tv show. The horns are on the record. I have been a fan of Marc since the 1980s when I discovered him. He was T.Rex. It was his band. David Bowie and he were friends and rivals in the 1960s and ‘70s. David Bowie opened for T.Rex in 1969. Marc Bolan was huge all over the world in the early ‘70s and very influential to the punk rockers that came up in the late ‘70s. Billy Idol, Adam Ant, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Damned, Culture Club, KISS, The Ramones, etc... all cite Bolan as a huge influence. His lyrics were other-worldly. And, yes, he had a unique, fey voice. No one sounds like him. He brought glam and showmanship back to rock music after the grungy hippy days. Love him.
