She performed "What Have You Done For Me Lately" and a snippet of "Nasty" at the 1987 Grammys the next month that's even better than this performance! She was also nominated for Album of the Year in 1987. Definitely recommend watching that one next. Those are the only award show performances she did during the Control era.
Diana Ross said at the end "I knew her since she was a baby." The choreographed performance is so smooth and seamless. The way that she moved was like she was made of silk. The move that you were talking about the head, arm and hand movement is called the Jellybean. React to her TV performances from the early 80s promoting her first 2 albums like on American Bandstand and other TV shows please. And react to her TV performance of What Have You Done For Me Lately on American Bandstand and the 87 Grammy Awards show. And react to her Rhythm Nation short film and the Rhythm Nation Tour concert performance please.
Very excited for you to continue your Janet journey on Patreon!! As others have mentioned the 1987 Grammys performance of ‘What Have You Done For Me Lately’ is an absolute must watch. There’s one particular part of the choreography which you will love! In addition, it’s a unique arrangement of the song which is absolute 🔥
I still remember laying down on the floor and watching this performance live as a kid on our console TV. I was mesmerized! All of us kids talked about it at school the next day. Brings back such great memories and thanks so much for posting it!
@@bridgethegapreactions A more recent favorite from Janet is the song and video Rock With You. Check it out! She looks incredible in it and the song is super catchy.
I liked her Grammy medley of what have you done for me lately. It is better than this because she didn't lip it She sang it live and the dancing is still on point
it's unbelievable how how little credit she gets considering how great she was/is. Michael was great but I never actually had any of his albums tbh but I have every one of hers.
Choreographed by Barry Lather. That's him behind Janet...on the right...with the mullet. The original dancer wasn't working out so Barry filled in at the last minute. Barry also choreographed Janet's 1987 Grammy performance and her "Pleasure Principle" music video.
100% you have to do "What have you done for me lately/ Nasty" on the Grammys...live too! One thing about the Janet during this time, no one had that kind of attitude like she had! That what stands out... She was oozing confidence, power, control, energy and she did all that without singing live. Also that dance move you liked was replicated in a well known movie Sister Act where Lauren Hill does the exact same move to Janet's song what have you done for me lately.
I was a kid when she was starting up and she was my favorite and still is. That control album was everything to me. I was able to see her in concert with her IF album and I was in college. It was amazing!!
YES, this is indeed an ICONIC performance. Barry Lather, who also choreographed the Pleasure Principle video, choreographed this performance. He's the dancer with the mullet directly to Janet's right.
Great to see you react to this. See was my teenage idol Janet, back then was , deadly serious , the ultimate tom boy/ strong lady. She got me through my teenage years.
Yea this is my 2nd favorite Control era performance (the first is HANDS DOWN the Grammy performance, she's only performed there 1 time & it was in 1987 & it was EVERYTHING), but THIS is special too in that I don't think most even Janet fans know that this was her very 1st major award show performance (the Grammy's was a bit after this), but yea that crowd was going nuts because she was just dominating in music & videos all of 19866 & then this. That routine while from a technical standpoint not 1 of her best of her over 40yr performing career, but the execution is so damn SHARP, and like you picked up on serving up FOCUS in the face. She is big on her face conveying whatever the songs about, so for joyful songs (Together Again) she's got that million dollar smile, but for songs of a serious subject, shes giving you serious face lol. And Im VERY happy to hear Janet's coming to the Patreon mix, I kinda gathered that's why she wasn't already, her views in terms of reactions aren't what they should be, but Im hoping there's a change coming with that. But you can count me in as a Patreon as soon as that tier goes up.
With the first 2 albums, her TV performances were solo. Young Love, Come Give Your Love to Me, Dream Street were songs she performed on American Bandstand and the series Fame. With Control, she was ready to strike out on her own. Her own producers (Timmy and Jerry), choreographers (Paula and Barry) and her own attitude!
Everybody lip synced at the AMAs especially if it was a live performance that involved dance. I think it was actually a requirement. Grammys is the opposite
The one with the long mullet choreographed it. Barry Lather. He was in her music videos, choreographed The Pleasure Principle and the GRAMMYs performance. He’s incredible.
Also her Colorations with Herb Albert "Diamonds" Dance song and "Making love in the rain" Ballad, plus "young love" from her first album - she was probably 12/13 years old.
paula abdul did the cheorgraphy. the 1987 grammy performance with Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Monte Moir, Jellybean Johnson, Jesse Johnson and Jermon Benton aka Janet Jackson and The Time (the prince side project that was fronted by Moris Day) is another level
It’s much further down the Janet journey and you should hold to watch them but my fav award performances are MTV awards - Doesn’t really matter MTV awards - If/TTWLG AMA’s - 2009 ( 9 minute medley) MTV awards - Michael Tribute I feel i can go on and on 😂
Janet Jackson's "Control" album was recorded after she broke free and fired her dad as her manager and took contol of her musical career. She left California and moved to Minneapolis, MN and teamed up with producer's Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (of the band The Time). To say the Control album was groundbreaking would be an understatement, it changed the game in R&B music and also let her big bother Michael know that I'm more than just your little sister, I'm your competition. A lot of the choreography (in her videos and stage performances) came from Paula Abdul, and she was also featured in some of the videos from the album. There was a time in 1986 (when Control was released) where you couldn't go anywhere without hearing songs from the album: malls, nightclubs, the park, your neighbors, gas stations, and even elevators. Janet was HUGE that year and her legion of fans grew daily. Shockingly, her Control album lost to Paul Simon's Graceland the next month at The Grammy Awards and to this day, people still talk about how Janet was robbed that night because she definitely deserved that Grammy...silver lining: Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis did receive the Grammy for Producer's of The Year for their fabulous production
I remember I watched this performance, at that time my childhood was awful My parents fought and there was a lot of screaming in my house hold But I remember watching this performance at my grandpas house and it it took all my pain away .I love Janet
If you liked this performance,, then you MUST watch her live performance of her song "What About" at the VH1 Fashion Awards. Simply her best live performance ever. It was Janet in her absolute prime!!!!!!
Anutha FACT During THE CONTROL Period: JANET Played Keyboards On MOST, if Not ALL CONTROL TRACKS...Thus She's A Musician/Dancer/Singer/Writer/Actress/Producer
This performance is good, but you have to see her performance of WHYDFML/Nasty at the 1987 Grammy Awards. I had already been a fan, but watching that performance live that night when I was a young adult of 23, sealed it for me. I’m a lifelong Stan. Paula Abdul’s choreography I believe, but not sure.
