Teena can SANG. Once you dive more into her music you will see that her lane is primarily R&B. While black artists strived to “cross over” to mainstream popularity Teena crossed over to us. She performed this song on Soul Train! The first time we heard Teena was on a duet with Rick James. You HAVE to react to that. It will blow your mind. Both of them are amazing on that song.
I remember seeing her on Soul Train. Don Cornelius called her Vanilla Soul Sister. We she begin to sing, the dancers went crazy! It was a beautiful site to see ❤
Mary Christine Brockert, aka Teena Marie, released over a dozen albums in her life, including one in 2013 that was released posthumously. "Lover Girl" was her only Top 10 hit on the Hot 100, but she had a slew of R&B hits in her career. If you want to go down this rabbit hole, try "I Need Your Lovin", "Ooo La La La", or "Square Biz" for your next one. I would also request that you check out Laura Branigan, who had a string of great songs in the early 80s. "Self Control" is my favorite, but "Gloria" and "Solitaire" are also bangers. Another great songbird that we lost too soon.
Ooh la la la, Deja Vu, Out on a Limb, Portuguese Lover, If I Were A Bell, Square Biz, Behind the Groove take your pick. Lady T was one of a kind. Her first album had no pictures of her, probably so they could market her to R&B audiences. My suggestion for you is a version of Ooh la la la, I believe it was either Soul Train or The Midnight Special. Dive deep and don't miss her collaborations with Rick James. Peace
Sheila E's 1984 hit "The Glamorous Life" fits in great with this. A group from the disco era also featuring great female musicians was A Taste of Honey, who had a huge 1978 hit with "Boogie Oogie Oogie."
This woman just give me chills. She is a powerhouse of talent. Outstanding voice, awesome performer who gave 100% on stage. Played multiple instruments and composed her own songs. You can tell I’m a big fan, Teena was all soul and it was real. Try “ Square Biz” and for a change of pace try “ Ooo La La” , her range and style is mesmerizing. Enjoy!!❤️
She was slept down by the mainstream in general! I think black folks were the only ones that really embraced her! And she embraced us back as well! That’s why she still beloved even years after her death!
Oooh yes, Teena is the queen of blue eyed soul. A true legend of R&B, Rock, funk... I had the pleasure of seeing her and Rick James in concert when I was 17. She has so many great hits. Some of my personal favs are Deja Vu (I’ve been here before) , Oooh La La La and Behind The Groove .
Have to listen to her duet with Rick James, Fire and Desire. But be sure to react to the recorded version. She spans rock, soul, R&B and jazz. Teena was always invited to the cookouts.
So happy finally Teena Marie!!! Teena had soul flowing thru her veins. Danced “the hustle” to her hit “Behind the Groove” in high school and went thru all kinds of emotions with “Fire and Desire” duet with Rick James, one of the greatest love songs of all times❤️RIP Teena and Rick🙏🏼 Always love and enjoy ur videos❤️
Hello Rob squad family reaction I am new to your channel like what I see but I have a surprise for you. I just watched your Tina Marie reaction and you were saying how she's Rock guess what not true during the late 70s and early 80s Tina Marie was the reigning queen of r&b soul music what you need to listen to is deja vu and dear lover everywhere you went walking down the street sitting in somebody's car at somebody's house all you heard from the late seventies to the early 80s was Tina Marie
Teena Marie IS THE TRUTH....the Vanilla Child...put RESPECT on her name..like Prince she played almost all the instruments on her albums.....vocally flawless....
So glad you finally got around to Teena Marie. I suggested this song in letter I sent on your second unboxing video. She’s not only a phenomenal singer, but she’s an exceptional guitar player. There just weren’t that many female funk artists in the 70s and 80s that also played and wrote their own music. The only other that I can think of is Klymax which was an all female funk band in the 80s.
Kinda cool that you called her a rocker. Shows her versatility. Ultra talented and truly beloved among old school R&B/Funk fans, she's a legend and is truly missed. See the other comments for song suggestions. I know folks already have that covered.
My girl .... she saaaaaaaaaaaang her soul out!!! Dear Lover, Portuguese Love, Square Biz, Ask Your Mama, Casanova Brown, Fire and Desire and Happy (her duets with Rick James), Young Love, Out On A Limb ... her rabbit hole is awesome!!!
Hello Rob Squad! I'm really loving watching your reactions! So many reactors just sit there and give commentary. The way you get into the music while you listen just shows how much you're enjoying what you are hearing! So many people overlooked Teena Marie, so I'm glad you found her! She had 15 Top 40 hits on the R&B charts, 5 of those crossed over to the dance club charts. If you haven't heard them yet, you need to check out "I Need Your Lovin'" and "Square Biz". If you are looking for suggestions, I would LOVE to see you react to Five Star (sometimes called 5 Star). They were a British family act that didn't get Top 40 hits here, but were all over the R&B and dance charts. Songs to listen to for them would be: All Fall Down Let Me Be The One Love Take Over Can't Wait Another Minute If I Say Yes Whenever Your Ready Strong As Steel
Yes....a Rick James Protégé.....but also.....Teena Marie was opening act for 11 concerts of Prince' Dirty-Mind-Tour in the year 1980. Can you not "smell" the Minneapolis "tight" moves with the Rick James flair on this girl? ;-) Fabulous!
Teena Marie's voice was incredible...RIP 4 songs that you have to listen to from her are Ooo La La La, Square Biz, Out On A Limb, and of course Fire and Desire featuring Rick James
Diamond Girl, Nice and Wild Fantasy Girl, Johnny O Spring Love, Stevie B One More Try, Timmy T Time After Time, Timmy T Because I Love You (The Postman Song), Stevie B Let The Music Play, Shannon When I Hear Music, Debbie Deb Come Go With Me, Exposè Silent Morning, Noel Lookout Weekend, Debbie Deb I'll Be Loving You, Collage I Can't Wait, Nu Shooz Two Of Hearts, Stacey Q Crush On You, The Jets All Cried Out, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam I Still Believe, Brenda K Starr In My Eyes, Stevie B Party Your Body, Stevie B Naughty Girls Need Love, Samantha Fox I Wanna Be The One, Stevie B Let Me Be The One, Safire You Got It All, The Jets Joy & Pain, Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock
I have always loved this record!! So many people thought she was black and then they saw her... blue eyed soul ALL DAY clearly influenced by Prince (as well as Rick James), and she wrote all her own songs I think she was the first white woman to appear on Soul Train, some folks called her the Ivory Queen and the Ivory Queen of Soul
Now that you've discovered lovely Teena you have to check out her other hits like Square Biz and also..... Mr. Rick James.... funk-R&B dynamo!! Rick & Teena collaborated together amongst other things...wooooo!!!!
Teena Marie is the female Prince! She can do any & everything musically. React to Teena Marie & Rick James' "Fire & Desire". An R&B Classic! And Teena's "Casanova Brown". Another R&B Classic!
This awesome lady is in the group of performers who are white but sing this damn good who alot of people thought was black she is a blue eyed soul singer! check out of song with Rick James Fire & Desire! they were a couple of a while and he produced some of her music along with herself! R.I.P. to the legend Ms. Teena Marie and Rick James!
Great memories. I remember seeing Lady T and Rick James in 1981 in concert. Teena got to close to the front of the stage and fell about 7 feet to the floor and jumped up and kept on jamming. Much love to her. RIP Teena
Let's vote for "80's Freestyle February"! You can do Female Friday & Male Monday lol. This song is more freestyle than anything else & it is a genre that will keep you moving in your chair. Females The Cover Girls "Show Me" Trinere "I'll Be All You Ever Need" Taylor Dayne "Tell it to My Heart" Debbie Deb "Look Out Weekend" Males Stevie B "Spring Love" TKA "One Way Love" Johnny O "Fantasy Girl" Will to Power "Dramin" Just to name a few. I have not seen any other channel react to freestyle yet.
She's been my favorite female artist since I was in 9th grade...I'm 55 now.Even if it is off camera you owe it to yourself to dive into her entire catalog!
Teena Marie would definitely be a good one to add to the lineup for female Fridays. Such an amazing voice and so many great songs. Hope you get to listen to Square Biz or I Need Your Lovin'.
Motown superstar!!! They hid her for a bit as her sound was so uniquely “Black” for a white artist. Amber nailed it… funk, soul, r&b and so much more! I’m sure SQUARE BIZ was also mentioned a lot! Cant go wrong with Ms Teena Marie. Y’all made me smile 😁
Teena Marie is from here in Venice Beach, CA. PLEASE, PLEASE! Listen, and react to these four different sounds by T. Marie: How can I resist it, which has a fold sound. Behind the groove, Portuguese Love, and Casanova Brown. Also, this may be the only rock style song that she sang; she (Teena) is more of a R&B, Funk, Jazz and Folk style singer. Oh, react to Laura Nyro: Stoney End.
She was much bigger in the R&B realm, so this was her only cross-over pop hit. She toured with and opened for Rick James. She was very talented as a musician and songwriter. Unfortunately she died very young.
I like to believe our artists had some soul before it completely got lost. Best advice ever, don't lose your soul. Trade your soul for nothing. When the soul wants to get sold, the music in the eras will fight for it.
Oh yes, definitely react to Sheila E's Glamorous Life. She Sings, she dances, and she plays a stand-up drum kit. (She beats the heck out of that cow bell for you Jay and there is plenty of sass for you Amber.) The song itself is written by Prince. The Official video is great, but there is a 1985 Live version that may even be better, IMO (Light-up Drumsticks, no kidding!)
Funkmaster Rick James was heavily involved with her writing and production of music when Tina signed with Motown. Tina was a Sophisticated Funky R&B artist. Jorden, if you want to hear her funky bars, listen to the song "Square Biz".
Hey guys!… you must watch Billy Ocean’s video song called “Loverboy”!!! So awesome!! One of the best 80’s songs of all time! Y’all are gonna “LOVE” it!!! 😃
There were a number of high-charting female performers in the eighties with similarly sexual lyric content to this song, ranging from Vanity 6 ("Nasty Girl," 1982) in the early eighties through Apollonia 6 (covering Prince's "Sex Shooter," 1984), the Mary Jane Girls ("In My House," 1984), and Klymaxx ("The Men All Pause" and "Meeting in the Ladies Room," both 1984) in the mid-eighties to Pebbles ("Mercedes Boy," 1987) in the late eighties. Y'all would probably like Klymaxx best.
