It never ceases to amaze me that many are obsessed with riding in the boat while it’s being hauled out of the water. There’s a thousand pounds of extra weight and stress on the truck and the one little ratchet strap holding the boat in place. Good job.
We have a lot of “big” trucks like that here in Texas. Lifted, all terrain tires and……you guessed it, two wheel drive. We call them pavement princesses.
@@OVER-bENGINEERED I haven’t heard that one, it’s hilarious 😂. Pavement princess is what one of my friends started calling these poser trucks. She has a modified Wrangler and actually goes off roading with her husband.
@@OVER-bENGINEERED Brodozer? That's like men who get a tattoo in the small of their back, aka "Tramp Stamp" trying to change the name to "champ stamp".
Kind of reminds me of my old coworker. A bunch of us from work were heading out to the river so we all met up at a grocery store on the way out. I looked at my friends tire and it is low on air and cracked really bad. I mentioned this to him and he says it's fine, he'll put air in it. Half of our group left and we got to our campsite at around noon. The other half rolled in at 2am, seems my coworkers tire finally lost air, disintegrated and road on the rim for 100 yards when the rear hub failed too. They had to wait for a flatbed to arrive, then load up the boat and trailer, drive back 50 miles, find a trailer shop and completely replace the axle assembly, rims and tires. The bummer was there was an RV dealership and shop within 5 miles of the grocery store we stopped at. Never rush it.
Paul* I’m 79, and my parents lived through the depression, so they took care of what little they had. The one saying my Mother lived by was, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”
@@memojv5 I probably did but this was the same coworker that drained his boat battery after passing out and who's truck kept over heating on another trip to the river.
Stupidity! I can never figure out why these idiots stay in the boat, or stand on the dock watching the tires spin instead of using some common sense, and climbing into the bed of the truck, to put weight on the back wheels, so the tires will grip the ramp. They’re totally useless, including the operator of the boat for not knowing this, so he could tell, them what to do! These morons just added more weight to the boat so the truck add more excess weight to drag up a slippery ramp!
Because the Captain doesnt lay down the rules. People always knew the rules of my boat and what job they had when coming and going, they also knew that when the boat came back to the dock that their boat ride ended and get the hell off the boat. Lay out the ground rules for everyone to follow. It amazes me to watch a Captain pull up to a dock and watch 3 people in the boat do nothing to help, those people were not told what they needed to do by the Captain or they are to F-ing lazy.
If you have Non-boaters on the boat it’s easier to tell them to wait on the dock or stay in the boat especially with kids you don’t want them chasing the trailer and boat through the parking lot to get back to you
I am constantly blown away at how many of these lifted trucks aren't four wheel drive. 🤣 These driveway queens are all show, no go! Personally I would never have a truck without FWD. I live in the Midwest, but whether it's at the boat ramp, the snow, or the mud, FWD is worth every penny! Besides, as SOON as those expensive tires start spinning, you are only spending money! I've got 'cheap' tires, they are only $400 bucks a piece!
I only got 2wd truck went thru the mud like nothing. Even took me anywhere i needed to go, obviously live in Florida there no reason to have a 4x4 here. But ill be moving up to Massachusetts in few months so it might be time to trade it in for a 4x4
I bought a boat this summer and the first time I took it to the lake I launched it no problem went to pull the trailer out and bam the tire came flouting up. Luckily there some people there that lifted the trailer to get the tire back on enough to get it to the parking lot. Ran the boat around for a few hours then hauled ass back to the house to grab bearings and tools fixed finally made it back home at two in the morning. Yep that’s boating for ya!!
They should've used a tie down strap to lift the axle on the side missing the tire. On three tires they'd be fine to the parking lot or a short distance to a repair shop
Absolutely spot on; just strap up the axle on the lost wheel end or jack it up and chain it to the chassis of the trailer. Will run fine with three ...AS LONG as its not a rear most wheel. If it is travel very slowly as the trailer will want to wag its tail into the scrub :)
The early 2000 trucks came with automatic hubs with a manual back up in case the vacuum didn’t work. Unless they were changed to something like a warn hub.
You know these lifted diesel truck boys feel so emasculated being stuck on the boat ramp. Your truck looks super cool next the old lady pulling out a boat in her Honda CR-V.
With a tandem axle trailer you can chain up that axle to keep it from dragging. If you live close you might be able to nurse it home on3 tires. Always remove any weight from the boat that you can and put it in your vehicle
Personally, my thought was to simply jack-up the axle, and put the wheel back on if the wheel-nuts ( lug-nuts to you yanks) have been removed by some arsehat or just ‘come loose’. Of course you would need to get some extra nuts to use, but it’s not hard to remove one nut from each other wheel you have and have enough to be able to get home at reduced speed and with caution.
Me and my dad hitched the boat up one time and were all set to go. My dad got out to close the gate and heard a hissing sound as he walked my the trailer. He looked down at it just as he did, it went BANG! He wasn't hurt but it sounded like a shotgun going off! We didn't have a spare so boating was cancelled that day but at least it happened at home and not out on the road.
if the bearing is completely gone the wheel can slide right off, it's best to keep an extra bearing, tube of grease, tools with you at all times. I agree he should have re floated the boat. If he had an extra bearing, grease and required tools if could replaced the bearing in ~30 minutes. By dragging that trailer out with the boat he likely destroyed the threads on the end of the axle and won't be able to get the axle nut off may have to replace the axle.
No doubt, that's what I thought. I thought to myself that by leaving the boat on the trailer he most likely destroyed any possibility of a less time consuming and less expensive repair. He likely destroyed the hub and/or studs, spindles, etc.
It's been my experience that most boat owners don't have the sense God gave a goose. Most people have to call AAA just to get it tire changed or their battery jumped. Changing a wheel bearing is totally above their pay grade, mentally and mechanically.
NO. If you lose a bearing and your wheel actually falls of that way you most likely will need to replace the axle also. The bearing failure and the ejection of the wheel would likely kill the critical dimensions and surface characteristics of where the bearing rides on the axle. It would be roached.
Yep. Happened to me. Seal blew slung grease out by the time I got to the ramp hub destroyed the spindle. I blame the buddy bearing that pushes grease into the bearing and puts too much pressure on the seal.
The inner race and bearing must’ve been bad and failed for a tire to come completely off. It’s a double axle trailer so you can strap the axle up to the frame and still tow it. Just much slower.
Wow, that little boy jumping out of the drivers side at 5:26 was scary. If he would have accidentally hit the gear shifter into drive or reverse could have been ugly! And then he walks behind the truck….Parents, keep your kids away from the drivers side and keep an eye out where the are. The parents were distracted with the broken axle…..that’s how tragedy strikes!
man you guys have some nice ramps and docks! Been watching a bunch of these Boat Ramp Follies lately and now Im anxious AF about launching my own boat. I gotta get a grip on myself!
I had an axle break once and luckily I found a hunk of pipe near the ramp and used it to lash the axle together and it got me home where I could bolt it together. That trailer lasted another 14 years that way!
What you pull and what you’re using to pull can quickly be negated by HOW you pull… Proper weight distribution and steady power make a world of difference. Oh, and maintaining your truck, boat, and trailer can prevent a TON of headaches! Only using these things as a means for fun will 100% catch up with you.
it really blows my mind how someone wants to own a boat and then skips out on buying an actual tow vehicle. this truck shows exactly why you should have a 4x4. my truck was a 1/2 ton and i could pull any boat out with ease. its called 4x4 low and all but idle it up the ramp
@@ericsmith6677 seriously. I found out last year that Toyota made 4Runners in 2WD?! I didn’t believe it at first. We have 2 and an F-350 all 4x4 with lockers. I just don’t understand why they would make anything on a truck frame 2WD?!
@shsuususjs snjsus ok so when they pull a boat down the road I really don't care but backing down a slick ramp and then not having a real tow vehicle to pull said boat out makes no since. You know what I mean. You buy a boat that weighs 7000lbs and you pull it with a Honda Ridgeline because it says it can tow 7000lbs. That's the problem
On a tandem axle boat trailer, you can run it with just the rear axle having a good wheel and tire (not far and slower). Been there, done that. But he should have taken care of that before loading the boat obviously. The pickup driver must be pretty oblivious to do that kind of damage and not notice. It had to have smoked and screeched for many miles before the attempted boat recovery. And no more that one person in the boat for pull out, if that.
Why? When I used to fish, every weekend, I would be in the boat when it was backed in and when it was pulled out... EVERY TIME. My cousin drove the truck and I would pick him up/drop him off at the dock and never even tie off.
Seems as the years go on, people get dumber and dumber. Like the guy who can't pull the boat out because he has 5 or 6 people STILL in the boat, that's a good 600 or more pounds he has to pull.
Love the jacked up truck that whatever the reason did not put it in 4 wheel drive, but also left 133 people in the boat while loading and likely had the ballast bags full as well...
Yeah I'm confused why it's stupid. I mean it's kind of dumb to have a bunch of people but one on the boat doesn't seem like an issue unless I'm completely missing something.
I did the same thing to a one time so called friend who was sneaking around with my now ex wife. A fishing buddy spotted them launching his rig for a day at the sandbar while I was at work. After he called me all it took was pair of pliers and a flat screwdriver. I went to the ramp, popped the dust covers loosened the axle nuts to only the last thread, put the covers back on and let motion and gravity do the rest. They got their love boat out of the water OK, but at about 35 mph and less than a mile later 2 of the 4 wheels ran for the exit door. Soon after I "just Happened" to come upon their unfortunate situation, the boat was half on the ground and the two gawking muts were having a what do we do now moment. This was before the time of camera phones, but the look on their faces will live in my memory forever.
Intentionally causing property damage and potentially endangering lives because you make bad choices in friends and women? You must be proud. I'm all for revenge, but this is not the way.
@kvandy5989 there's other people lives at stake in his so called revenge Imagine an innocent family getting killed becuz u pulled a revenge on ur cheating wife on a public road
My uncle told me on the ramp, 4 wheel drive in low, and use wheel chock when truck isnt moving. I've never had any issues. But i laugh at everyone else spinning tires at my ramp. I love when boats are way bigger than the souped up truck thats towing them, thats my favorite.
To do an emergency repair when one wheel falls off provided the studs are ok, you just take one nut off each of the other wheels to fasten the wheel back on. Only senseless people stay on the boat when it's being recovered from the water, surely they know their weights going to cause problems with the traction of the prime mover?
@@fastwin493 Why? All his videos have been fine for months, this one is quieter on both the devices I commonly use to watch his videos. FWIW one of them is a 5G phone that I bought just a few months ago, so I am not sure what I would upgrade it to even if it wasn't for the fact that it worked just fine with his other videos over the past week. 🤔
I love watching your videos man, i live on a small island in Alaska and everything down there is so different than up here. It is fun watching how people do things there compared to up here. Love to compare videos someday. Keep it up!
This happens more than it should because the same people who pore over every detail when they spec out their tow vehicle and new boat don't pay the slightest attention to what trailer the dealer chooses to put under it. They know what sound system they want on the boat, right down to the last decibel and number of speakers, but will never take even the most cursory peek at the weight limit for that rig. And maintenance, don't make me laugh. I learned when selling boats and yachts that there can be no halfway measures in maintaining a boat trailer, Especially for salt water use. Use the finest marine salt-water grease for hubs, fittings and slathered on every bolt, nut and washer before your first launch. Coat every fitting on that trailer like you want it to be showroom new after the last payment is made, and keep it up. Flush out the trailer after each use, including every cross-member, the wheels, chains, light fixtures, Everything. And never, Ever overload your trailer.
I have not read into the comment section. But I believe that the other engineers (most) will agree. If they take a significant chunk of wood and strap it to the axel. They could continue to either the repair center, or house which is closest, and proceed with repairs. Or they can back into the water, reliving the trailer from the weight, of the boat.
Addition; As with off road expeditions. Sometimes trucks get stuck in deep sticky holes. One truck pulling out another, isn’t enough. Sometimes they need to dasychain multiple vehicles together. Then they can pull, gently away.
It is sure obvious that nobody launches or trailers their boats by themselves like a lot of us. They sure make a lot of unnecessary work for themselves. But then again if they did, we wouldn't have this entertaining channel to watch 🙂
