This song is actually about the record company he was leaving, he owed them one more song before he could leave so he wrote this and added it to his greatest hits album that was coming out even though it was a yet unheard of song thus releasing him from his contract. It was his "last dance" with them.

That’s awesome dude. When my dad was really sick in 97 I was 16 and wrote Tom a letter explaining how much my pops and I love his music...we received a hand written note back from Tom and he had all the Heartbreakers sign it and each sent well wishes to my dad. I treasure that letter

I met and partied with Tom Petty back in the 80's. I ended up passing out at the table. He sat next to me and would talk to everyone. He then said - What do you think Rise'? He then would pick up my head and shake it yes and then put me back. He was so nice (from what I could remember!) LOL

It's reported that Tom, before making it as a musician, worked as a gravedigger. He Always struck me as kinda weird, but he had his signature on a bunch of hit songs. Heartbreaker guitarist, Mike Campbell, said in an interview that this song can mean whatever you choose it to mean. He did state that it just might be about Tom’s breakup with his wife, Jane. They were married 22 years. This song was recorded one year later. It was originally titled ‘Hey, Indiana Girl’, but not long before its release they decided on ‘Mary Jane’s Last Dance’.

To me this song has always had a double meaning, both a former flame and weed being means to kill the pain...even the band members leave it up to the listener to decide what it means. This is one of those songs we called "Swamp Blues" in NC, because it was bluesy but you were too damn hot and sticky wherever you were playing to get a faster tempo... :P Petty was also really good at writing songs that could have multiple meanings, and many times even he didn't know what the meaning was. In the documentary 'Running Down a Dream', he talked about his song writing as being fairly passive. It would start with a tune or a lyric, and the other would come. Sometimes they popped into his head almost pre-written, other times he'd write some music or a lyric, and take it to the band, and they'd fill in the rest together. One of you Patreon peeps needs to get him to comment on some 'Traveling Wilburys' "Last Night" audio. :P That'll give him musical history in a tidy package. :P

I know you like to be funny and stuff but this man meant the world to me. His music is legendary. There is no one like him. He struggled with drug addiction...he even said in an interview that when he saw a certain video he made he could feel the coke in the back of his throat. He overcame! But he died...I miss him to this day
