I’m really late to this but the game literally states in one of the photo album pictures that aubrey, sunny, and basil were born in the same year with no mention of kel, meaning he was definitely born the year before
Definetly, some people go a year earlier or later to school depending on their skills and general behaviour. Its pretty common to have a class of people who could almost be apart by like 2 years of age.
My headcannon is that Sunny would walk with his sister to school when their mom dropped her off. Making him beg his mom to enroll him to school a year earlier so he could be with Mari longer. Why? BECAUSE I DID THE SAME THING I wanted to hangout with my sister so I started school a year earlier. I relate a whole lot with Sunny, except for stairs..
Kel could have been born a year before the rest and because he was born in november he has a late birthday which is why he probably shares the same class as his friends, its happened to my sibling

I just realized something else about the cookbook thing, for some reason sunny has been carrying 20 dollars in his pocket even though he never leaves the house to spend it on anything.
Now that you mention it, where did Sunny get that money from? The only time he left his bed was been he couldn’t sleep through the need to use the bathroom or eat. And his mom is early around.
I think that his mom said something like "oh I left you money if you ever go outside to see your friends one last time before moving out" when you go to the phone or something on 3 days left. I'm not sure, I haven't played in a while and I don't remember
The birthday thing could technically still make sense if Kel was born the year before Sunny and just didn’t go to school until the year after he was old enough because it was too late to join by that point. They had to have been in the same classes because of one of the books in the lost library, so this is one possible explanation.

I was the oldest in my grade back in elementary school. people thought I got held back during preschool because the person they thought was the oldest was actually 4 days younger than me

No, that's not likely, I have people in my class who are born after September who are the oldest of the class. Anyone BEFORE Mid August/September would be sent to the previous grade level. People who would be born during the later end of the year would be the oldest, and people on the younger side would most likely be born during June to July/Mid August. January to May are the kids who are in the middle. So you guys don't have this kind of system? I'm kind of confused why everyone is overthinking this.

For the birthday thing, his birthday is probably the year prior. Like, let’s say he was born in 1987 (idk, first year to come to mind) Basil, Aubrey, and Sunny would’ve been born 1988 By that logic, they would still be in the same grade, and there would be a portion of time where all of them are 12
Ok but actually the birthdays chart is considerable evidence that OMORI is set in the Southern Hemisphere, where everything would make a little more sense towards them being in the same year at school *except* sunny would have likely been moved up a year, which is possible either if he was smart or he moved in from the Northern Hemisphere in one of his first years of school (and kel is a year older). (in the Southern Hemisphere your grade switches at the very start of the year and usually anyone after March starting school goes into a "Year 0" (just my experience.))
I'm in Brazil and we do the the grade thing, your grade goes up as soon as you start the new school year, but if you don't mind me asking, what's a "Year 0"?

However, if you join school late due to the time of your fifth birthday (students in my country usually start around their fifth birthday), you will be put into a "year 0" where you acclimate to a school environment, but you don't really have a curriculum, as you would not have enough time to follow a proper, structured curriculum within half a school year or even less.

Kel - That's not very nice :( So he might have repeated accidentally, he's also kind of like the "dumb friend", makes stupid decisions quite often. Still, I do not wanna break that headcanon as it is very heartwarming and Kel really is a good friend (when he isn't too stupid)
Its like, some familys makes his childs go school earlier. Like everyone goes 1st grade when their 7 year old but kel goes 1st grade when hes 6 years old
Nah they were probably all still in the same class. The school years go from August/September to May/June (depending on where you live) so if you’re born at the end of a year (typically Sept, Oct, Nov, & Dec) then you go in with other kids born near the start of the next year. Thats why schoolyears are for example 2023-2024 and not just one year. Kel was just born at the very end of the previous year (so technically he’s only a couple months older than Sunny, Basil, and Aubrey)
Another example of omori not having logic: Aubrey was the one who introduced basil to everyone else, and she seemed to be very good friends with him. BUT IN THE GAME.. Aubrey is seen bullying, stealing, etc. mostly directed towards Basil, the person who she introduced to the group to begin with.
I don't know if you know this so imma write it in the 'read more' part so- spoiler alert? On the last day, Aubrey apologizes for bullying everyone and explains that she did it because she went over to Basil's house after Mari's death and while he was at the bathroom, she went through the photo album and saw that the photos were covered in black marker, convinced it was Basil's fault, she started calling him names, etc. Aubrey's dad also left recently, when we go in her house, we can see her mom is neglectful and possibly abusive. Aubrey sees Kel coping with making new friends, Basil is really introverted and Sunny, well- he escapes reality in his bed for 4 years. Hero is depressed for a while too, but I don't think he impacts her that much since he isn't in the same school year as her. Aubrey sees it as if they didn't care at all, like they abandoned her, she becomes a hooligan and a bad bıtch. Mari also seemed very close to her, I mean, they planned on dyeing their hair together, I think that she kinda sees her as a sister/parental figure, she has a ton of parent issues too. All that pain showed in anger and hatred towards Basil, resulting in her bullying him. Kel has friends, but Basil probably being an introvert and weak, he's an easy victim. She explained how it started easy, calling him names and all, then her friends joined. Hurting Basil was like a coping mechanism for all the stuff she's been through, an extremely bad coping mechanism though and it doesn't excuse everything she's done to him TLDR : Aubrey thought Basil scribbled over the photos, she has mommy/daddy issues, thinks everyone abandons her and Mari, Basil is easy target, Auby copes by bullying him
In the 90s you weren't allowed to enter school, at least in our public school district, unless you were 5 years old by 9/31 that year. I have an October birthday, and for that reason, I was always the oldest until a kid moved to our district in 6th grade who was born 10/1.

Kel could have been held back or started school when he was a little older (I started school when I was 5, my brother started when he was 6) Or Sunny's a year younger than everyone, but based on Basil's photo album it seems like he and Sunny turned 12 the same year
Kel probably started school a year later or failed first grade (not a thing anymore but it used to be) because otherwise aubrey and basil would also have to be a year older than sunny too which is just too much If this is wrong my excuse is i need to see my thoughts to make sense of them
Or he could just be a grade ahead of everyone, which would make sense as to why he isn’t in the school bus with Sunny, Aubrey and Basil and instead standing with the two high school freshman, Hero and Mari.
