Many of you have pointed out that the pics and video footage are not from the Test in discussion. Yes, and the end credits state as much. Pics and videos are for representational purposes only. Archived footage from this era isn't easily available on the internet for reproduction. The Vengsarkar bit at the three-minute mark is erroneous in audio but a correction is made in the subtitles. Apologies for the error.

@4:53 "And there were no limits on beamers either"??? Beamers were always illegal in cricket (from the time of Bradman itself - that's why there is no instance of Larwood bowling beamers even at the height of bodyline). It was just that West Indian Umpires in 1976 were either too weak or too biased to call out their bowlers bowling beamers at Indian batsmen. Essentially West Indies cheated (flouted the rules) to win the match against India.

Mohindir Amarnath deserves more recognition. He must have been one of the bravest and best batsmen against pace. In 1976, he was hit in the face and hospitalised while trying to hook the pacemen. He returned in bandages and was out first ball; hooking. In 1981/82, he was India's lone stalwart on a nightmarish 6-test tour of Pakistan followed by 5 tests in the West Indies. He scored over 500 runs in each series while skin, hair, stumps and bails flew all round. At home to West Indies next year, he got a string (or is it flock?) of ducks and was dropped, you can only ask so much. Hail the Nath!

Lloyd was instigated by what his team had from Aussies. But it all started by England in the bodyline series against the all time great Sir Don Bradman of Aussie. Lloyd chosen to use it against Indians was a surprise because India wasn't a big match winners in those days. The anchor spoke much about Sunny, but valiant Anshuman Gaekwad, Mohinder are the real unsung heroes of India. They were made aayaram gayaram by the cricket board despite their performances with abilities. The Stylish Legend G.R.Vishwanath has become an unknown entity of Indian cricket with the efflux of time. They are all time greats of Indian cricket. See, no helmet, no headgear, no forearm pads, no digital cameras from multiple focus points, no drs, no power bats, no third umpire no limitations on bowling bouncers and beamers, no instant action against erring bowlers, no penalties, no MRI scans and above all no big money at all. Yet, they played just for the sake cricket and on behalf of the Nation. Salutations to many many unsung heroes of Indian cricket. 👏👏👏👏🙋‍♂️🙋👍🙏

A few things to keep in mind while comparing Gavaskar to today's Indian greats... no protection, no neutral umpires, no opportunity to practice against genuine pace bowling except on tour in real matches, no bowling machines, soft home pitches that did not in any way simulate the bounce and pace of Aus or WI, a mediocre Indian bowling attack (barring Kapil Dev) that was useless except when defending large totals. He faced the fastest bowlers the world had ever seen, with no restrictions placed on them whatsoever, and was India's best batsman and perhaps the best opener ever for more than 15 years.

The batsmen of those days (be it Gavaskar or Richards or Bradman or Sobers) will always be better than the batsmen who succeeded them, because of this sole reason! Cricket is not going back to the days of "no protection" because the world would rather not play the sport at all instead of playing it with no protection and risk deaths on the field. It has already happened inspite of helmets being present (e.g. Phil Hughes, Raman Lamba etc.). So short story.... let the Gavaskars and the Richards be the best of all time! Today's batsman dont care. And thats good!

I'm glad India got their revenge in the 83 World Cup. One of the great one day performances and ended the West Indies domination forever...they never appeared in another final. It also makes me glad that we've returned to a more balanced era of bowling since Shane Warne, Murali and all the great Indian spinners as well as Abdul Qadir and Mushtaq Ahmed from Pakistan and Daniel Vittori from NZ. I'm happy to never go back to the era of 11 overs an hour no matter how good the Windies were. It says something about both sides when you look at the mess that West Indian cricket became once the great era finished and where Indian cricket is now. Gavaskar started all that then Kapil Dev built on it and continued to snowball until they reached their zenith with Tendulkar and Dhoni. Much respect from Australia for what they've built.

West Indies demise began with the introduction of cable TV and easier access American sports especially the NBA. The days of cricket being King in the West Indies are long gone. As a child in Antigua, I knew two sports in school for boys, Cricket and football with cricket being number one in our young minds because of WI dominance and the heroes it provided for us to aspire to. I joined my family in the US at about the age of 12. It took many years to return to Antigua, but when I did there were basketball courts all over with leagues being run. Where cricket once dominated most sports related arguments, the NBA with the powerhouses, Bulls, Lakers, Celtics Detroit Pistons were fast pushing for equal status. Gavaskar was not the only great player at the time. In the 1971 series, dilip sardesai scored a double hundred. In 1971, india went on to win a series for the first time in england. This was part of a consecutive run of three series victories. Between 1971 and 1975, the indian team had three world class batsmen : gavaskar, vishwanath and amarnath. Vishwanath had the distinction of scoring 14 centuries at an average of 40 plus. Each century vishwanath scored led to a victory or draw for india. I know of no other batsman whose centuries were as influential in getting results for his team. The third world class batsman was mohinder amarnath. He also averaged 40 plus, and was a good medium pacer as well, one of the few medium pacers india had. He scored 9 out of 11 centuries overseas. I don't know of any world class test batsman who has scored such a high percentage of centuries overseas. In 1983 and 1984, amarnath was the best batsman in the world. The selectors made the mistake of dropping amarnath from time to time because early in his career, from 1969 to 1975, amarnath wasn't very good at playing fast bowling. He still deserved to be in the team as a middle order batting allrounder. His medium pace alone warranted selection. The fourth world class batsman is dilip vengsarkar. He also.averaged 40 plus. On top of this india had a quartet of world class spinners. We had 2 great offspinners in prasanna and venkatraghavan, a great left armer in bishan bedi and a unique legspinner in chandrasekhar, who, with his polio withered arm, bowled quick legspin, and even had a bouncer is his armoury, which was quite unique at the time. Add to this wicketkeeper kirmani, who had the unique distinction of learning how to keep wicket against a spin dominated attack in the 1970's and a pace dominated one in the 1980's, and averaging 27 with the bat, which is good for a lower order batsman, and you have the emergence of an indian team in which there were at any given time, between 5 to 8 world class players, who, by and large, were good at home, as well as overseas. Victories by these players in england and west indies ensured that touring teams started to send their best teams to india. In the 1950's and 1960's, india had a decent home record. But because india had a very poor away record, touring teams, especially england, underestimated india and didn't always send their best teams to india. The victories in england and the west indies in 1971 proved to be a wakeup call for other test playing nations to start taking india seriously. These victories were the first ever series victories of india in england and west indies. The first ever series victory of india came in 1967 in new zealand.

One bouncer rule would have never been introduced if there were no Wasim n Waqar. It was just to apply brakes to their aggression, pathetic & biased western mentality against subcontinent teams. As far this IND/WI series, till now I heard a lot about brutality of WI bowlers but didn't know that how bravely Indian batting line-up faced them. A record chase of 403 against a furious bowling line-up needs great courage & determination, absolutely miraculous . Then 306/6 on a wicket like Jamaica, was not less than a nightmare, especially without any modern day protection. @@predatorprey8656 BTW I didn't compare, just discussed bouncer rule reasoning. Anyways, these are your thoughts dude but I want to disagree respectfully. Nothing to take away from WI bowlers but while going into comparison with W's, just compare the condition and pitches as well. Also, modern protection guards were not in place in 70's, feeling batsmen less secure. More special, no /over bouncer limit , making a genuine pacer more fierceful. So providing the conditions ,protections & change of rules in their era, I think W 's were really at top. Moreover, if it is only hitting the body or generating the super pace makes someone best, then Shoaib Akhtar should stand far ahead of Wasim, similarly Thompson over Lillie and Lee over Mc Grath should have an edge but it is not the case.

Well India was always bad, it took 60 years to form a decent team. Now with all the people following cricket and great deal of commercialization, the board became too strong and has enough resources to create a good coaching program to create a decent team. If India could create fast bowlers they would have done it as well, so stop with the nonsense of taking the higher road . Just look at Kohli and co trash talking all the time. On the same note, we all know what road BCCI and their cronies take !!! At least Windies played with joy and flair unlike the uptight Indian batsmen !!! Eventually umpire ,David Shepherd stepped in before Close was really injured. And yet Holding commentates now as if butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. Can't stand the man.

How many centuries did gavaskar score against the top Windies bowler s ? In 71 ,the windies had no one , in 74 only Roberts , with Julian the no2 and Boyce and holder , 3 scrubs . . in 76 was the first time he faced a multiple pace attack . I believe he also faced the Windies in a series when the 4 windies pacemen were playing wsc and not available so he scored big against them . would love to know his runs , average and century nos against the top Windies attack

The blame for this is Australia who did the same to the WI the previous year - that was the biggest mistake ever done in cricket. As this video has shown it spurned the WI into a frenzy of super dangerous fast bowling for 2 decades. If it wasnt for helmets a number of players would have been killed. Now days intimidatory bowling is impossible.

The same body line tactics is used by Australia since they started dominating cricket... They made mayhem of the tailenders of the opposition... No doubt that they ruled for 20 years

@@RD-oi4su that guy is exaggerating. I was at the match. Sunil Gavasker always stood like a lion against our attack. So whats up with you? That test in australia when west indies was battered by Thompson and Lillee you never hear west indies moaning and complaining. We learned from our experience and became better. That bowl and caught chance which damaged chandrachaker or Bedi finger was that thuggery too? Quit the moaning. Can there be this bowling line up again ? NEVER EVER INDEED ! Imagine you have to face the very dangerous Andy Roberts Joel Garner next change is Michael Holding and Malcolm Marshall...all four very different and styles strategies . What an era that was and many have missed this era and will never ever understand what these 4 names were in bowling for oppositions and batsmen world over. Absolute terror its like getting slaughtered murdered killed going into bat & facing them. As if entering a cage of vicious wild animals full of Lions Tigers Cheetahs Panthers . These bowlers gave forced and gave birth to one bouncer per over rule from England. Patterson Walsh Bishop Ambrose were the last recognized dangerous famous 4 from West Indies after the Fab4 Never even in cricket history Man of the Match semifinal and the finals 1983 World Cup Hero Super Star Mohinder Amarnath is the most highly underrated player in the world. 1982 Imran Khan said he is the best in the world for playing fast bowling especially Bouncers short deliveries highest scorer in that 1982 series in Pakistan , 1982 1983 West Indies tours Viv Richards said Jimmy Amarnath plays west indian bowlers and all global quick genuine fast bowlers the best. I have seen him play since 1980s he got hit on head jaws face nose got injured the most like no other player ever in cricket history you can check about him and you will be shocked to know how brave and courageously Mohinder Amarnath hit the hook shots attacked them with ease to the worlds fastest bowlers Lillie thomson hadlee imran roberts marshall garner holding etc Also note that current Williamson root kohli babar Smith AB Devilliers Maxwell Chris Gayle Rohit Sharma etc can't bat against these quality bowlers and that too with bigger larger sophisticated bats state of the art protections ⛑helmets guards equipment gadgets fielding rules shorter boundaries restrictions on bouncers. 1932 1933 Eng beat Australia Body line Series 1975 Australia hammered West Indies 5 1 1976 Jamica Inda west Indies bloodbath bloodbath Bradman vs Larwood Bodyline series Boycott vs Holding Richards vs Lillie Thomson Pascoe Hogg 1975 series Aus 5 - WI 1 Gavaskar vs Holding 1976 Series Bloodbath (Holding Daniel Roberts Marshall ) Srikanth vs Imran Khan Mark Waugh vs Alan Donald Tendulkar vs McGrath Brett Lee Kohli vs Anderson Waugh vs Ambrose Smith vs Jofra Archer Watson vs Wahab Riaz Rohit vs Aamir Any other duels encounters you know please add them here. That is why it is named and called TEST CRICKET, it seriously puts the batsmen bowlers fielders everybody into tests, you are tested your courage your bravery your skills your technique your patience your aggression your fears your plans your implementation your selection everything is being tested put on trials and this is the real authentic cricket TEST CRICKET. Jardine believed Bradman struggled against balls which bounced into his chest and formed a tactic to exploit this. But the plan needed the right bowler, and that bowler was former Nottinghamshire miner Harold Larwood. Duncan Hamilton, Larwood's biographer, said: "He had two things. Firstly he was incredibly accurate, he claimed never to have bowled a wide in his career, and accuracy was essential to Bodyline. As Australian batsman Bert Oldfield collapsed, his skull fractured by a lightning-fast ball, the booing from the 50,000-strong Adelaide Oval crowd became a deafening howl. The England players, mouths dry with fear, looked for escape routes - or even potential weapons - in case the mob fell on them.Bowler Harold Larwood, the focus of the fury, turned to team-mate Les Ames. "If they come," he said, "you can take the leg stump for protection - I'll take the middle."Never before or since that moment, 80 years ago to the day, on 16 January 1933, had cricket - and arguably any other sport - seen a contest which fired such anger, which reached so far and echoed for so long, as the Bodyline tour.Australia won the series 5-1. The Series is remembered for hostile fast bowling by Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson and for Viv Richards ability to take on fast bowlers by opening the innings in last test match.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ir8h4ZFIUNA.html My father listened to these series commentaries on radio those days and briefed us in details exactly how the Fame Thirsty Captains of England Australia and West Indies who were on verge of losing the captaincy and positions planned implemented organized unethical tactics during these 3 most bloody series of cricket played between Eng Aus WI Aus & WI India and dominated the oppositions who were better teams than them. 1932 33 Bodyline Series Larwood vs Bradman Eng beat Aus 4-1. Larwood & Engish bowlers attacked bodies of Aussies & especially Larwood devastatingly fast precise . All his contemporaries said he was the quickest they had faced. At certain times during that series he must have got close to, if not passed, the 100mph (160km/h) mark. "Every fast bowler who sees that old footage says, 'Wow, that's quick!'." Larwood believed Bradman struggled against balls which bounced into his chest and formed a tactic to exploit this.Australian batsman Bert Oldfield collapsed, his skull fractured by a lightning-fast ball, the booing from the 50,000-strong Adelaide Oval crowd became a deafening howl. 1975 series Aus beat WI 5-1 Lillie Thomson Richards Crowd sang Lillie Lillie kill kill kill & Kill Kill the Black Bastard .The Series is remembered for hostile fast bowling by Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson and for Viv Richards ability to take on fast bowlers by opening the innings in last test match. After this dissastrous drubbing at hands of Lillie thomson and co...Lloyd went to all parts of WI and chose Wayne Daniel Roberts to the existing Holding and Croft he had and then started initiated his strategy when he was losing the series to India in 1976 and then it was at Jamaica Sabina Park the bloodbath. 1976 WI beat India 2-1 Holding vs Gavaskar Amarnath Patel Vishwanath Vengsarkar Bloodbath Jamaica Test Crowd sang kill kill kill. Captain Bedi forced to declare as 3 top batsmen in hospital Amarnath Patel Gaekwad, 3 injured cant bat Gavaskar Vishwanath Vengsarkar and only bowlers left to bat and the risk of getting the bowlers also injured because of the unethical tactics used by Clive Lloyd attacking batsmen with beamers and batsmen as Clive's team got hammered in Australia 5-1 @Lillie Thomson Ferocious Hostile Bowling . India scored 400+ runs@Gavaskar and won test matches and from Winning the Series lost the Series and 1st time ever a team ie India from Winning the Series had to declare and lose the series because of injuries as those days planes facilities of transportation was not quick as today. Gavaskar threw his bat and cap in frustration and kept continuously appealing to the umpires saying I have not come here to die, I have a family and a new born son to see after I return home, but WI bowlers kept bowling beamers bouncers unlimited as those days there were no restrictions rules for bowlers. Last but not the least this current crap of superstars are very lucky to be living in these current times. Williamson Root kohli babar Smith Develliers etc can't bat against these quality bowlers and that too with bigger larger sophisticated bats protection ⛑helmets guards equipment gadgets fielding rules larger boundaries no restrictions on bouncers beamers pathetic dangerous crowds. That is why it is named and called TEST CRICKET, it seriously puts the batsmen bowlers fielders everybody into tests, You are continuously tested for 5 days rigorously you are tested with your courage your bravery your skills your technique your patience your temperament your aggression your fears your plans your strategies your implementation your selection everything is being tested put on trials and this is the real authentic cricket TEST CRICKET.
