On May 2, 2016, the NYU Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia welcomed Slavic literary scholar Michael Holquist for a lecture entitled “On a Footnote in Bakhtin.”
In terms of footnotes, Bakhtin is not particularly generous and when he does provide one, it is not always helpful. In this lecture, Holquist taps into one footnote of Bakhtin's 1937 essay titled "Forms of time and chronotope in the novel," which he finds breathtaking. Well aware that the transcendental is a feature of the whole system for Kant, Bakhtin dismisses it in a minor form of commentary - the footnote.
