I laughed when you said you were an introvert. You could have fooled me! As, always, enjoyed this video of your foray into California. Summer is usually fog and cold, at least here in the north.
@BreakingInTheHabit

Like I said in the last video... there are many things I can't show you! haha! The important thing to remember is that "introvert" doesn't mean "shy" or "anti-social," it simply designates where we get our energy from. I am very social and like to speak in front of lots of people, but it drains all of my energy.

Love your videos. Very inspirational. I have been wanting to be a priest for many years and to study the Latin masses, diplomacy, and canon law. At the moment my life has been turning south and been nothing but struggles. Could always use prayers and spiritual support. Thank you for your videos. - Samuel A. Salgado from AZ

Great video! Being a history buff, I'm fascinated with the history of California, the Spanish Missions and the Franciscan missionaries who brought Christianity there in 1769. I think it's so cool that a Franciscan Friar like you is still doing missionary work in southern California in 2018! I wish me and my family could have been there to hear you speak.

Catholics has more megachurches? Hmm ? Really. Well that is still not the case here in Texas lol. Bro Casey video made me look into what happened to Schuller? Other than I knew he got too old to run the church. Turns out it was a very sad ending. In short the former congregants are not mad at the Catholic church. But at its former leadership. You had people pay out memorials that are now being removed. And the church property has a cemetery that have family members concerned. Boy what a mess ! www.nytimes.com/2013/09/06/us/parishioners-find-removal-of-memorial-stones-an-added-indignity.html

Hey Br. Casey. Thanks for the awesome video! My fiancée and I visited Sts. Simon and Jude Parish last year while staying with my grandparents in Huntington Beach. Prior to that visit, I hadn’t realized it was part of our Santa Barbara Province. I work at Our Lady of the Angels at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Phoenix. Come visit if you ever get the chance. Also, my cousin is Bishop Kevin Vann. Pretty cool Cathedral right?! I got a mini tour last year and was so impressed with the property and the plans as they continue to remodel. Love it! Peace and good, James

So excited to see that you made it to my church, Saints Simon and Jude and celebrate mass with Fr. Vincent!!! I must have been on vacation, so I missed you. Gods people at SSJ are very much alive and it's been where I and do many raissd our families. So our Friars have been reassigned are we are grieving big time, but we know where they are and keeping in touch. Funny thing.... just last night I shared your RU-vid channel with my Illuman brothers from SSJ so you will have a few more SSJ followers. By the way, did they tell you that Fr. Henry Nouwen preached at the Crystal Cathedral back in 1995, or close to that date. I'm sure you had a great time with Mark driving you around. God bess you in you calling. HO!

I used to be a parishioner at Sts Simon and Jude when I was a kid. My parents were members of the Italian Catholic Federation there so lots of memories - too many to write here! Did you ever make it to Mission San Juan Capistrano? It and the rest of the California missions were built by Spanish Franciscans in the 1700s. If you don’t mind my asking what are your thoughts regarding St Junipero Serra and the controversy surrounding his enslavement of the Native Americans to build these missions.
@BreakingInTheHabit
@BreakingInTheHabit 6 лет назад
Sorry, didn't get a chance to get there! As for Junipero Serra, I think it is always dangerous to apply our understanding of morality to the past. We need to judge people based on the situation in which they lived, not ours.
@jaredhall1299
@jaredhall1299 6 лет назад
Father Junipero Serra and the other Franciscan missionaries who accompanied him could have stayed in Spain or even Mexico and lived a comfortable life. Instead they chose hardship, trials and suffering in order to bring Christianity to the native people of California. He honestly believed their souls were in jeopardy and wanted to help them by bringing them good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Hi Brother Casey, Im Al from the Philippines. I always watch your videos and Im happy to say that you really are blessed with the gift of preaching. I’m just wondering why is there no rosary (like how dominicans wear it) in your habit not like the OFM here in the Philippines.
@BreakingInTheHabit
@BreakingInTheHabit 6 лет назад
Some Franciscans wear a rosary but many do not. The rosary is a wonderful devotion that many keep daily, but it is not a requirement of our Order (or the Church). For many, adding sacramentals to the habit makes it very cluttered and difficult to move around; the more we add to it the more it becomes a monastic garment rather than a habit of penance or work.
@happygolucky5989
@happygolucky5989 4 года назад
Hi! I am one of the OFM’s here in the Philippines. I do not wear rosary (Franciscan crown) in my habit too. Some do but I prefer not to wear them because of many accidents happened. Easily breaks and dangles in my groin which I don’t prefer.

"It's unbalanced, like my life." Is it sad that my first thought was "Well, that's relatable." Also good to know you haven't found balance yet either. I remember reading about when the Catholic Church bought it in like 2012? (Forgive me if I'm wrong) My mom took me to the building when I was 10 (2001) because I love religious architecture even though at that age I swore I was atheist.

Proving that beauty transcends religion! I definitely believe that beauty is a way to the heart of God, something that can understood by even the non-believer.
@jessicaperez1370
@jessicaperez1370 6 лет назад
Where is the Tabernacle in that church? It is so sad when we don't keep Jesus front and center.
@BreakingInTheHabit
@BreakingInTheHabit 6 лет назад
Jessica Perez I hear this often and I think it offers a good catechetical moment. The tabernacle’s purpose is to reserve leftover hosts for the sick. They are not to be used during masses. Why? Because what is important during mass is not bringing out leftover hosts from a previous mass but about the celebration before us. You say that it’s sad that Jesus isn’t kept front and center, but what about the altar where the celebration actually takes place? What about the lectern where the Word of God is made present. Tabernacles places behind the altar distract from Christ who is already front and center. Even the general instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) designates that the altar is to treated with greater prominence during mass than the tabernacle.
@jessicaperez1370
@jessicaperez1370 6 лет назад
When Mass is not taking place and the Altar is empty, it is nice to have a focal point during prayer. As humans and being flawed we need to involve our senses to help us focus. No, it is not required that it is seen but putting the left over Body of Christ away from sight seems wrong (personal view point).
@BreakingInTheHabit
@BreakingInTheHabit 6 лет назад
Jessica Perez I agree, but that is why there is a beautiful side chapel for private prayer. The Church, honestly, is not designed for private prayer. It’s designed for communal liturgies.

Collin Ng It was the Crystal Cathedral of Robert Schuller fame. The Diocese of Orange bought the campus from Schuller's defunct church. It will be the Christ Cathedral, the new seat of the Diocese of Orange. They bought it for a great price and remodeling is actually slightly ahead of schedule. It's been quite a process from day one, especially when what was left of the old congregation finally had to leave. There's been some legal wrangling through the whole process, but the Diocese has overcome it.

During a convention of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM) in Long Beach, we had a concert (Durafle's Requiem, I think) at the then Chrystal Cathedral. It is an amazing worship space I had often seen on television (The basic tenant of Rev. Robert Schuller's message: "God loves you, and so do I.") Today, the smaller congregation continues to produce the weekly TV program, "Hour of Power" from their new church.

The old "monk vs friar" clarification! ;)
@uliks2434
@uliks2434 6 лет назад
I'd say new world (U.S.) vs old world (Europe). Monk because they live in an organized monastery, friars live in a convent, a differently organized community that in order to be created requires the "beneplacit" of Rome and the local bishop where the community is being created. I believe that there are also requirements when it comes to the edifices that need to be built in order to be considered a convent. The word was introduced when the order of the mendicants was recognized by Rome, and the monks are called friars/sisters.
@BreakingInTheHabit
@BreakingInTheHabit 6 лет назад
Well, no, that's not entirely correct. A monk is someone who lives a monastic life in a monastery. Their work is generally internal, focused on stability and prayer. They are often cloistered and contemplative. They are not called friars, but monks, as they are different things. A friar (a word that means "brother") is a mendicant, meaning that he does not live in a monastery but lives an itinerant life, working in the world and traveling. Our houses are called "friaries" and they can be any type of edifice, often normal houses. For more, you can see this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xwBiBQztbYA.html
@uliks2434
@uliks2434 6 лет назад
I don't think I said something different from what you just did. Obviously coming from Italy, I know the meaning of "frate", of "fratello". The words I reported are a translation from an Italian encyclopedia. It might be that the modern reformation of the church superseded the requirements of how a convent should look like, if it needs the beneplacit of Rome or not. But it seems that was required in tradition. In any case thank you for having taken the time to reply to my comment. Much blessings to you. Pax et bonum.

I find it interesting that people want to judge the past based on today's revelation in the evolution of the sciences, theology, technology, etc. What was the mindset then? How do we understand things today? Here's a multiple choice question, prof. Why do we believe that our way today is (a) an alternative (b) a better alternative (c) the perfect replacement (d) a loss of something great. Sometimes, there is no answer. We just must live in the broadness of the Catholic faith, not judging others' approach while being committed to our own in service to the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
