The third map (out of 4) for On a Rail Uncut is complete and has begun Alpha testing on the Black Mesa forums! This map, B1, is the introduction to the Materials Transit system which you will traverse throughout B1 and B2. It features a radical departure from Black Mesa's general themes, as well as some very carefully crafted scripted sequences, and a particularly memorable (hopefully) ambush, featuring the song "Lights Out," written for me by my good friend, The Empire. This is still fairly early in development, and if you have any suggestions/ideas, please post them in the comments or in the thread on the Black Mesa forums, which can be found below.

To me, i think the music track fits the ambush perfectly, its laid back, which i personally enjoy, and the ambush is similar to how you are pushed down, your trying to not kill, but survive, which the music track helps with.

Also, i notice a little bit before the ambush, when you zoom in you can see 2 marines hiding behind the crate. Were they moved in the final version this doesnt matter, but if not, can you attack them, if so, will it ruin the ambush?

Sorry for spam of comments on myself. To me, the turntable is my most memorable and favorite fight in all of Half Life, maybe even in video games in general! The mood, atmosphere, music, and difficulty go perfectly well. The fight is a masterpiece, well done!

Great job, keep it up! I understand why the BM team cut it, for time, but its great that you're doing this.

Thanks for all your hard work. In any future playthroughs though I would avoid showing the hidden stashes and other secrets. I realize you want to show that you took the time to incorporate it into the design, but it kinda takes the reward out of the exploration, and defeats the purpose of a secret.

That fight scene where you threw the grenade back was awesome. There are a few sharp blank walls around the place that could do with a decal or two, but as you said it is supposed to be a new area, so I don't really know.

i really like this i know that i wont be getting a computer that can actually take this game for a while but its nice to know that some memorably spaces are being filled in a game i loved from way back when

That's a fair argument, I guess I went into this video expecting more of a developer commentary than walkthrough, which usually doesn't show everything. I would still prefer the minor secrets left to the players to find, but in the end it's your project, video and decision to make. Again, thanks for the fantastic work, I'm looking forward to the final release.

that is just awesome. I'm looking forward to the final cut and then I'll give it a run through. Maybe with the marine armed with the rocket launcher, you could add some extra troops to provide cover support for him as he was a bit exposed there. might also make for a more meaningful threat too.

I like it a lot. Recognize a lot of scenes from HL1. I'm impatiently awaiting release day so I can continue my second playthrough of Black Mesa.

Amazing piece of work, congratulations. I've already played your ST Uncut chapter and it's excellent, it really fits seamless inside Black Mesa. Can't wait to play your official release of OaR Uncut ! But take your time, the longer it takes, the better it tastes. I have a question, do you get in touch with the Black Mesa team ? What are they thinking about your work, as they originally decided to cut these 2 chapters ?

Looks like A LOT of work has gone into this and it looks awesome! For me those cut parts from Surface Tension and OaR were also very very important, but what I like more about this is that Black Mesa has more playtime with this. And with Xen it will again have a lot more playtime, much more than the original Half-Life. I think maybe someone could also address the animations of some weapons and sounds. (Crowbar, Shotgun)

I get what you're saying, but in all fairness, you could say watching a walkthrough of the map does that anyway - spoils stuff. I would argue that if you don't want to get stuff spoiled - don't watch the video before you've played the map. It's a developer commentary where I explain my reasons and some of the difficulties behind designing things, I just think it makes sense to include everything in it. I understand where you're coming from though.

I'm really loving the ambush scene! But it also could also use some tweaking. The walkway at 14:00 seems kinda low. You might want to delete that part or make it higher. I'm amazed at your work on all of these maps.

3:12 - I think it should be Sector E Access Mat. Trans. A not Sector C because I know that this chapter takes place in Sector E.

I'm aware of this, there was actually a whole page of discussion we had about this on the Black Mesa forums! I'm glad somebody noticed though. Black Mesa already did A LOT to make the HECU look really dumb, which I didn't like, so I figure making the mistake a tad more plausible wouldn't hurt. Only the most illiterate of fools would write "yore," but "your" instead of "you're" is a much more plausible mistake. It makes the HECU look uneducated, but not dumb as fuck.

What an oddly blunt and very slightly rude way of asking a relatively simple question. I'm currently in the middle of my university finals, and just a few days ago completed my dissertation. I don't have the time to work on this, as university is really important and will change the rest of my life. I'm not being lazy at all, I'm working really hard. I have set aside 3 weeks once I have finished university (forever!) where I will have nothing to do but work on OaR Uncut. It will all get done.

I'm not sure if you'd consider this, but maybe it'd be a good idea to put longer tunnels where you just ride the tram between room/sequences/puzzles. I feel like On a Rail doesn't have enough tram riding in BMS. I'm not talking about huge, long, drawn out sequences, but maybe a period of 10 seconds or so. It'll make the tunnels feel more maze-like and vast. Just a suggestion. I know you're startin' on B2 now, so changing any of the previous maps may not be in the cards now.

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but iirc the original graffiti was misspelled as "yore dead freeman" isntead of "your". But I like the change, it's a much more plausible mistake.

Well this quiet sucks that I forgot about making backup. Now I need to wait few weeks for B2 to continue campaign because there is no longer transition to next map so I would have to type map c2a2c in console.

Me personally, I'm not too fond of the upper levels that you can't reach. You should probably tweak it or get rid of those walkways. Maybe add a g-man sighting.

they didn't decide per say ... they had to cut it as they were/are understaffed. For various reasons many of the original devs left the project and thus this had a negative impact on the games development.
