The frilly inner wheel arch on my Mercedes W123 230E looks terrible and a bit terrifying, but today's plan is to make the rust go away and weld in new metal so we have a soldi base to fix the new wing over next time. How hard can it be?

Total respect to a bloke outside on his drive , with a grinder , tin-snips, DIY welder and some pattern panels even having a go. The job you've made looks absolutely spot on. Good luck with the next stage Matt 👍

Brave effort Matt! Keep up the good work. A few suggestions: - 1mm 'plasma' cutting discs might give a less jagged finish to your panel cuts. - Get some decent RPE including particulate masks to wear when grinding/stripping/sanding and a fitted half face mask with vapour filters when spraying/using aerosols. You only have one pair of lungs and should set a good example for others you inspire to have a go. - A welders apron or overalls might be a good idea to avoid chance of nasty burns from melting clothing to yourself too.

Great to see incremental progress on the W123, but this job was a big step forward. Quite a daunting job at the outset, but you have confidence in your gear and yourself enough to get it done step by step, all while giving us a great educational video. Inspiring stuff Matt!

Well done, especially in this weather! I think I`d have been inclined to cut the outer wing before welding up the inner one, to ensure the inner & outer arch mated up properly, but we all do things different!

I have to echo the other comments regarding being a rather brave chap tackling a job like that on the drive, in the middle of weather like we have had lately. Coming on nicely Matt, and welding from both sides is going above and beyond! Going to be plenty of strength in that. But again, well done for tackling such a job outside like that, I have a barn and a four post lift to use, and even with them i have given up such work until spring now.

Just a tip Matt, you should try using a cutting disc instead of a grinding disc when cutting out metal. A cutting disc is a lot thinner so cuts easier, faster and creates less sparks. Hopefully this will help with grinder fatigue 👍🏼 Love the honest content

There's an immense satisfaction in doing jobs like this with limited non-professional kit at one's disposal. Good progress. One question, the mat you used to kneel on. What's it called? I too have been out in the cold but brilliant winter sunshine on my knees working inside my MG's wheel arches. My old knee joints do not like being in that position too long. They are old though and have been abused over many years cycling but also from kick starting ancient Motor Cycles stubbornly refusing to start. Pleased with the end result though.
