Race and Racism Playlist: • Racism and Race
It is very easy to discount the experiences of other people, especially when our experiences are very different and our relationships with them may already be strained by prejudice. And yes, people on all sides are casting out in anger because we want someone or something to blame for recent tragedies. But this is not a simple issue, it will never be simple. But there are very clear data showing that the criminal justice system values Black Americans differently than the average American. And that is a problem that must be confronted.
Thank you to Ashley Ford, Ahsante Bean, and Nathan Zed for looking over this script for me.
SOURCES
Black people are 2.5xmore likely to be killed by police. And unarmed black people 6x times more likely to be killed by police than unarmed white people:
www.washingtonpost.com/news/p...
(in the incessant debate, claims that if you look into the data you see a very different story invariably cherry pick data.)
Black people more likely to get plea deals with prison sentences:
www.crf-usa.org/brown-v-board-...
A more granular study shows that Black people and Hispanics are more likely to have officers use force on them even when they are complying with law enforcement:
www.washingtonpost.com/news/w...
This study also found no difference in the use of lethal force, in the communities studied.
Black people face longer sentences for the same crimes in the same situations even when accounting for multiple violations, whether they had a public defender, their economic status, and whether they're on parole:
www.wsj.com/articles/SB1000142...
Police have difficult jobs and that some of the communities they are tasked with protecting are very dangerous. Many officers do not want to work in those communities, so it is difficult to find police officers to do that work. It is stressful work.
The fact that there is racial bias in the criminal justice system is not a condemnation of police. Police need to be obeyed and supported because laws are want make our society function. But there is racial bias and it should be admitted, confronted, and we should do our best to deal with it. Because our society has a belief that black lives matter less...which is why we stand and say Black Lives Matter.

When people say "Save the Whales" nobody shouts "what about pandas?" When people say "Let's fight to end HIV" nobody says "what about cancer?" In those situations everyone understands that focussing on one issue doesn't negate the importance of other issues. But when people say "Black Lives Matter" all of a sudden it's seen as exclusionary and divisive. Why is that?

It isn't just with BLM, look at the thread here where there is some argument about whether women or men get raped more. Gamergate, gay rights, trans rights. It is rampant. If a group of people come out and try to get attention on an injustice they feel they have it seems like half the world has to jump in and make it about them or about something else. Why does every issue have to boil the ocean? Who cares if men or women get raped more? If men are upset about it, start talking about it. It isn't a contest. We don't have to just pick one. No one is making a priority list where your group has to be the most downtrodden and abused before anyone will do anything about it. Stop muddying up the water of your issue and the one you are contesting.....unless of course you really don't care about your own injustice and are just throwing that into the conversation to derail someone else...

because the black lives matter group make it racist. the way they conduct themselves as a group is pathetic they don't want to hear anybody side but their own and it will out screen until you finally just give up they're allowed to get away with murder cough cough they incite murder on Cops why don't you look at what happened the night of the Dallas shootings in New York they chanted what do we want Dead Cops when do we want them now how can anybody support them. they're looking for an anarchist reason to rebell. even if the situation is made up in their minds they will balls to the wall go for it I have yet to see these people speak intelligently calmly without calling someone a racist wishing the pig dead it's sad actually that people defend the black lives matter group because you're defending a terrorist group to me that makes you very anti-American making you part of the problem not part of the solution

Empathy is fine, though if we could get people to stop having children they lack the means to care for, that would do a lot more to solve the problems we observe.

+BobWidlefish if only we (specially poor communities) had decent sex ed and an available, comprehensive reproductive health system (yes, including abortion).
@BobWidlefish
@BobWidlefish 8 лет назад
Nahchuva Schools do teach sex ed, though really the burden is on parents anyway. People are responsible for their own actions. The high rate of people having kids they can't take care of isn't because they lack the knowledge that sex is how kids get made. I think access to abortion services (etc) is helpful, too, though again the moral responsibility is with the individual people acting irresponsibly. People not taking responsibility for their own actions is a problem by itself, and something we shouldn't shy away from.
@puppylovergirl303
@puppylovergirl303 8 лет назад
+BobWidlefish what test should they have to pass? Who gets to decide? Are we going to start forcing abortions or sterilizations now? How does that even remotely relate to the importance of empathy?

I just became black recently when I relocated to the united states! I know this a funny way to put it but where I am from, Africa that is, nobody really cares if you are black because we are mostly black! It is therefore of no significance there. Nobody ever points it out or tries to touch my hair... Here it is different though because people kept pointing it out or acting strangely around me until I realized that there is some sort of significance that is attached to the colour of my skin. It is honestly one of the most confusing experiences ever. I still have no clue how to wrap my head. I guess I have always been black, I just never realized it. Thanks for the video Hank. I watch you and John all the time. You helped me quite a bit with A&P.

Hey! This is a complicated and difficult and controversial topic. Please be polite and civil in the comments. We will be removing confrontational or rude comments! Think of it like this, if you wouldn't say it while gathered with a few friends who disagree with you without losing said friends, don't say it here. Also, I made this video before the events in Nice and talked a little bit about how that made me feel and what I've been thinking about with regard to responding to current events over on hankschannel. If you want more info / sources on this video, that's in the description. EDIT: The way the RU-vid comment algorithm works, controversial topics that get heated debates going rise to the top. I wish, I wish, I wish I didn't have to comment on this video. I was hoping people would listen to this with an open mind and really think about their privilege and the history of racism that this country is built on. But no, the comments are not swaying in that direction so because I am a black man in America I have to comment because my silence on this matter is way more damaging than the fear of upsetting someone today. That's the difference. You comment because you don't agree, I comment because I DO NOT WANT TO DIE. I want to live a full life just like you but I don't. There is a fear of the justice system because I am not treated the same as you. I'm just not. If I get killed tomorrow by cops there will be a whole discussion on why I deserved to die and that officer will keep his badge and paycheck while my mother will grieve the lost of her son. Don't talk to me about people being angry when you ignore the sole reason why we're not happy. Thank you Vlogbrothers for educating the masses on everything from science to politics. I applaud you for giving this matter the platform it deserves. I'm sure this won't be the last video about it but it's progress from generations not talking about it.

Kinda feel like the blm movement should direct there anger towards the black community.I mean if you worried about getting shot then your priority should be to end black on black violence.Your way more likely to be killed by another black man then any cop. Infact cops are your only protection against such a thing happening .Unless you want to protect yourself and add to the statistics basically continuing the cycle of b on b crime.

Tystarr2k2 I disagree nothing i said was ignorant and is backed by numbers.And believe your the one who is uninformed or willfully being ignorant.But tbh it's sad to hear you say that you tired of explaining.And it's sad that it's come to a point were you feel that you always have 2.I don't feel sad because your black and feel the need to always have to speak out on racism.I feel that way because you're a human and shouldn't have 2.Am arab and muslim and hate that i always have to defend islam and arabs every time nut bag blows himself up.I hate that my latino friends have to speak out against dirt bags who treat them like thiefs and rapists.Or lbgt groups who constantly have to fight for even the most basic liberties.Thats why #alllivesmatter and although it's a phrase that was made up by some racist cunt.I think we should own it and embrace it.And not act as if the enemy is white black or brown .There are arab islamic terrorist I can't deny that just like you can't deny.That as a black man your more likely be shot by another black man.Before 9/11 the world never even spoke islam and terrorist in the same sentence.And i don't hold it against them for doing it now.Becase it's something that the muslim world should get rid of not by calling someone racist for speak the truth.But by activly weeding out the bad apples.Blm should do the same face it the black community it self built a image that the black man.Is different is scary and would kill.While not all are you can't deny that's whats put out there.Born and rasied in Nj in jersey city no less I seen it 1st hand but.I been in jordan for 3 years now and you should definitely.Come to the middle east and see , black men are recpected and no one sees color.And at the same time 0 black on black crime .No thug life culture no cop targets black men.Wonder why?Anyway long rant but i thought i would type for both of us.I know your tiered no need to respond .Best wishs and peace be upon you.

To everyone who is saying All Lives Matter: the Black Lives Matter movement is implying that all lives matter, but that black lives are treated like they aren't. The all lives matter movement should be on the same side, but it seems to be made by people who don't understand that rights to one group doesn't mean discrimination to another, especially if the "discriminated group" is the majority.

As a white Scandinavian person I am not sure I even have the right to comment on this issue, but all I will say is that as far removed as I am both from the actual events and the cultural and historical factors that enter into it, I hear about and see the problems that non-white people face in America too often. I say "too often" because I have seen too many names as hashtags trending because another black person was killed by a police officer, I have read too many stories of these police officers not even being put through a trial, too many pictures and videos of families of dead people crying for justice from a system that I have seen fail them too often. It cuts me deep every time, and I can't believe I have to say "every time" about something like this when once is one too many. Stay strong, black Americans. Black Lives Matter. We will stand behind you and amplify your voice.

i think it is a problem that in recent discussion there is a strong focus on the "experince" of x people and the "privilege" of x people wich leads to people like you thinig that they may not have the right to comment of course you have because for the validity of an argument it doesn't matter who makes it only if the basis is true and if the logic of the argumentation is corect and maby to a smal extent how it is formulated

+TheAnonymmynona The reason I say that is because I am conscious that I am speaking on a subject and a reality that doesn't affect me, all I know is what I see and read which I know may well be biased. Recently, the BLM movement has been all over my personal social media. One post particularly said the following: "When we say Black Lives Matter, we aren't saying that only black lives matter or black lives matter more than others. We're saying that our lives matter as much as anyone else's." As a white male college student, I understand this. Maybe not fully, because I haven't had to live it. But I can imagine. And it isn't fair to them. So many people today are treated with less courtesy and even less equality. I fear that America will simply regress back into segregation, just as we were roughly 70 years ago. I just want everybody to know that you're loved. You're loved and respected and valued. These tragedies that innocent people have suffered should not dampen your spirit. The righteous will defend you as the agents of evil descend upon you. We as a species must stand together, else we will be the end of ourselves.

The problem with this "debate" is that it has some how become politically correct to blame "white" people or the "institutions" or the "police". There has been little discussion as to the black culture in the United States. We all agree that slavery was wrong. We seem to forget it was white people that fought to end slavery, it was a white person that wrote the emancipation proclamation, it was white people that wrote Amendments 13, 14 and 15., it was white people that over turned Jim Crow laws and passed the Civil Rights bills of the 1960s. Yes, of course, it was other white people that made all of that happen in the first place, but things have gotten better and better and better over the decades since civil rights. A black person can do ANYTHING he/she wants. They can achieve ANYTHING the rest of us can, and HAVE. There is no walk of life that we do not see black people being very successful in. It is about making the right choices. With freedom, black people had choices to make. Many of them simply made the wrong choices. I hear about some system set up, or ghettos set up and more, but an individual does not have to follow the mass of people. It is not white people that force black people to have so many children at such young ages out of a family structure. It is not white people forcing black men to drop out of school. It is not white people forcing 6.9% (black men)of the population to commit 50% of the murders. YES, we have a police problem in America. The police have been over stretched and many police officers do act like the are the law rather than enforcing it. Anyone in that position would become like that as power does corrupt. But it is not an overwhelming race problem. Black men have fought more against the police and police have a fear to respond in kind. The lack of respect of authority by black men contributes to this problem. CHANGE your culture and this problem will go away.
@MrGreenCheddar
@MrGreenCheddar 8 лет назад
Words NEVER to be understood by most in those parties involved. If you were to say the very same enlightened thing and be an influential black person you might be killed by other black people if not surely ostracized by the black community as a whole. You are not allowed to see this problem from an unbiased perspective in this country whether black or white. White people are also not allowed to be given credit for ANYTHING they have contributed towards the betterment of the black community. If you are a member of the black community you are not allowed to be apathetic to others outside that community and especially white people. NO ONE will talk of this fact nor mention it in any capacity even though as Hank, put it "It is something we all know of" It is truly sad how you and the hand full of people black or white, who obviously see that the emperor is wearing no cloths, will never be heard. \ BTW, I am black and I am scared not of the police but of ignorant people.
@epiclysmart
@epiclysmart 8 лет назад
White people did that because Black people couldn't. Black people couldn't have abolished slavery because they were the slaves. I agree that most white people aren't evil and neither are black people. Also, due to gerrymandered school districts, the black populace tends to receive the short end of our education system. This leads to them having the problems you described. Thank you for your opinion.

As mentioned there is no walk of life that a black person cannot be successful in. As such, there is no system in place to keep black people from achieving success, no matter what it is. Poverty is from the examples of the choices I gave before. The racial bias in the justice system stems from the way the black culture acts towards authority and that it takes prison to try and get black men to stop the bad behavior as opposed to probation that scares the white person to not break the law. It has to do with the lack of respect for authority in the black culture in the past 50 years. I won't address "priming" as this is a word made up like "micro aggressions" that do not have any true meaning. Liberal college students having too much time on their hands make these words up.What you are doing K NZ is buying into this false belief that an entire GROUP is destined to be something at birth simply because the color of their skin. But it is just WRONG. If you look at ANY poor people in any major country, they all have the same problems with poverty, education, law enforcement, etc. The problem is the choices that parents make for their kids and then the kids making bad choices as they grow up. The difference is that in those countries, the poor people are usually the exact same race, so they cannot cry racism. It is only in America that the cries of racism occur. But it is economic, not race.Let me reiterate...ANY black person can achieve ANYTHING. If the INDIVIDUAL makes the right choices. Why is it that I am the one that has complete faith in black people, while those in your camp make them helpless victims? Yet you say I am the one that finds black people scary.

+vlogbrothers I have to say this. I was going to send you an email about this in the podcast, in response of one of the questions (I don't remember now) but it was about a person who couldn't stop reading hatred comments even in the nerdfighteria community. And I wanted to disagree. Because one of the reasons why I keep watching your videos and listening to your podcast is because I've finally found a place where people can talk and debate about things without being mean. I mean I know those comments exist but I think that the people here is people who I can talk to. And I think it's because of you guys. You have a big impact in this community so thank you again. When talking to people, I often understand it under the following light. Their job in a conversation, as a person who has built up an understanding of the world, who has an ego - their job is to defend themselves. If you are trying to *argue* with someone, you are trying to remove every layer, every defense either logical or not. If you are trying to change the world though, you just need to be a voice. People are social, their voices reinforce. We can only speak our minds and hope it gradually changes the environment, or create works that will slowly change perspective by making people *desire* to view your side because of how beautifully you have presented it. People don't generally have revelations, they take steps alongside the rest of the world, whether they know it or not.

It's hard to talk about BLM because of the disconnect between BLM's message and their actions. Everyone wants to support them, but then you look at what they've actually accomplished (blocking bridges, interrupting gay pride parades, causing riots) and you realize they done a lot more harm than good. But, if you dare criticize BLM for any of this, you get called racist. That's why most people would rather say as little as possible about BLM.

Everytime someone tries to diminish the BLM with "All lives matter" fallacy I remember the book "Animal Farm" quote "All animals are equal, some more than others", of course all lives matter, but let's admit that we have a problem that makes black and hispanic people more likely to be killed because of misconceptions and misunderstandings? I mean a white boy gets a gun and kill dozens of black people in a church, the police negotiated with him and just arrested him for a trial, a black guy was having a stroke, the police officer shocks him and uses pepper spray in his face for not responding... a black guy was walking alone at night with his phone in his hand, gets shot by police who thought he was holding a gun... I'm not saying that the police officers did it with bad intentions, or that they deliberately are racist towards black and hispanic people, BUT let's admit that our culture marked that bias in us all, and in a situation like this due to this kind of cultural influence black and hispanic people are more likely to be misjudged by anyone, and that is a real problem in our society that needs to be fixed, I also understand that police officers have their lives on the line all the time my grandpa was a police deputy and he died in service and seeing your fellow officers dying in service must put you on edge thinking it could be you next time, but I also understand that people should not be killed for quick misjudgments and misunderstandings, specially due to racial prejudice.

I'd make the case that this video does it, but perhaps does it in a way that's not as concrete as you would hope. Growing up in my town, the fact that I was white and other people were not white didn't really mean anything. I knew racism had been a thing once, but it wasn't until I was at least 10 that I realized that in some places, it is still very much a thing. It shocked me that anyone could actually think the color of a person's skin made any difference as to who they were. The fact is that discriminating based on skin color is as stupid as discriminating based on eye color. And as long as society continues to marginalize this one group, it is important to make people aware that yes, these people do matter. It's not exclusionary. They're not saying that only black lives matter. They are saying that black lives matter. Which they do. If you're concerned that your group is not getting treated fairly, then go make your own hashtag.

What annoys me about "all lives matter" is that all it does is try to cover up the fact that black people, and other POC are being treated as though their life doesn't matter. Obviously everyone's life matters, but right now, white peoples lives ARE being treated like they matter. We already know white people's lives matter! In ViHarts video about BLM, she talks about how when people say "all races to be united!" it really doesn't do anything. Being united is good, but it's an ideal, not a plan to end injustice. We need to actively stop racism, not cover up the struggles of black people by saying "we're all in this together, because all lives matter!"

We already know white people's lives matter!" i'm not saying white people's lives don't matter... i'm white. why would i say my life doesn't matter???? 3. again, black people are not being treated like their lives matter, and we need to actually help them to have the same rights as white people, and do more than just say "all lives matter." all that "all lives matter" is doing is presenting what is an ideal instead of an actual plan to get black people the rights they deserve.

+Liam McFarland - To deny the reality of something takes away one's burden of responsibility. When a person isn't directly affected by something, they have less incentive in trying to understand it, less empathy to help those affected, thus they feel less reason to expend their own time and energy in creating solutions. This is why progress of any kind takes exponentially more time than it honestly should. One of mankind's worst qualities.

The problem with using white privilege as an argument is that is becoming less and less true. A study recently came out that said black women coming out of university in the US are doing far far better than white men or white women. I think people are becoming pretty annoyed at people constantly saying they have white privilege, when a lot of people don't. There are people from both races that have it bad. This argument is more nuanced than saying one race has it all and the other doesn't.

+Tom Kavanagh I'd love to see the data and analysis of this study, however, I doubt you could produce an unbiased study if you tried. Just because there are a few white people who live in ghettos or are unemployed, doesn't mean white privilege isn't prevalent. I, as a 17-year -old white girl, wouldn't be scared for my life in a traffic stop. Someone of my age who happened to be a black male is much more likely to lose their life in the same situation. THAT is white privilege. I doubt you could honestly say you'd like to be treated the same way a black male of your age is treated on a day-to-day basis. And THAT is white privilege.

Another thing that is frustrating to me is when I see people arguing about things they couldn't possibly understand without more research or people who have actually experienced the topic of their discussion (this again comes down to what you said, shouting rather than listening). Information easily get corrupted or misinterpreted over the internet so I find it helpful when I see something that seems unjust or out of place to think about it from the perspective of the person who is talking and how they may feel based on their own experiences. I think it's important and necessary to acknowledge that there are issues that you don't entirely understand without going through them and in these cases it is vital to just listen and absorb before sharing your opinions. Not everything warrants or requires a response. When I see people arguing when really they are just misunderstanding each other it's annoying but that's why you have to think about the meaning of words or movements and not take every word literally, but more as a concept, such as with the Black Lives Matter movement. The name is to bring awareness to lives being taken seemingly without any real cause other than a system that is against them from the moment of their birth, or even before because of their parents or grandparents. We don't need something promoting the importance of white lives because that is perceived as common sense to most everyone. Black LIves Matter is really promoting the fact that all lives should matter and I think people who are against the movement should focus more on the meaning rather than the name.

I teach at a school in an economically underprivileged area full of diversity, where 86% of the students speak English as a second language and where learning about self portraits includes showing students how to mix 29 different shades of brown. I teach several classes made up of new immigrants from war town countries and refugee camps. I am often the only white person in the room, the only native born Canadian, or the only woman not wearing a hijab. All this to say that I am aware of my privilege as a white middle class Canadian, and despite this and my position as the teacher, I learn just as much from my students as they do from me. We discuss their perspectives, world views and their very varied experiences almost daily and am constantly impressed by the respect and open mindedness they show each other. We all need to show the same respect to each other, and to remember that just because someone's experience is different than our own doesn't make it any less true.

I heard someone say something on the radio, Something like "There are no good cops. There are good people who are cops, but there are no good cops. The institution doesn't allow it." A big part of this problem is not with the individual officers (though I believe there are people who don't deserve that kind of power) but with the system that trains police and perpetuates this kind of action.

Can I just say that there's a difference between a comment that expresses your opinion and a comment that blatantly attacks a group of people who are different from you? Every person I see who's complaining about Hank moderating the comments has the same argument: "Free speech wah wah stop censoring wah wah there's nothing wrong with being racist wah wah". If you are using offensive language and expressing yourself through hate speech, you are not sharing your opinion in a productive way. You are not furthering the conversation or providing a Devil's Advocate. You're being a poor excuse of a human being (let alone a Nerdfighter) and you deserve to be removed from the comment section.

Hank, I love you but I respectfully disagree with your concern about the different treatment of black people in this country. My dad was born in '59 and raised by a single mom alongside his brothers and sisters. He has worked as a locksmith for all of his adult life (it's a regular joke among us that he breaks into houses all day) and had many, many interactions with law enforcement. Both from working with my father and from the regular ebb and flow of life I have had a few dozen interactions with uniformed officers. I won't pretend that all of those interactions have been smooth but most of my experience of awkwardness has to do with me being an introvert. Social awkwardness has been my stock and trade for awhile. But, though I have worried about what I was going to say, I have never worried that a police officer would try to do me harm in any way, shape, or form. The cops, in my experience, are the good guys.

Most police officers and judges are the good guys, even the ones that tend to be more violent to black criminals or pass harsher sentences. This is a much more fundamental problem, having to do with the overall cultural perception of what constitutes a "shady" character, or a "trustworthy" person. The societal bias that exists is one rooted in intuition, which makes it exceptionally difficult to fix.

I've noticed with movement names like "Black Lives Matter" and "Feminism", that the names end up causing a lot of discussion, in stead of the thought they try to convey. Even from people who agree with the sentiment that the movement is trying to convey. I think it's hard to name a counter movement (that term might have a different meaning though... I mean a movement that aims to address an imbalance) without that name making people disagree with you, even though you find similar things important. "I'm for equality, which isn't here, so let's promote the side that needs help", -"Boooh, you say you want equality, but in stead you're glorifying one side". Maybe we should just number the movement so that people are forced to look up what they are supposed to stand for, in stead of giving cognitive bias time to react to the name.

The problem with numbering it is that then it can get really hard to remember all the specific numbers and what they correspond to, but as you said the problem with names is that it means people make up their mind about you before you even speak. It also has to do with the fact that the larger a group is, the more the ideals will vary within that group.

Thanks for this video. However reading comments is disheartening - I should stop. It's funny how when soldiers experience atrocities in war zones, we can understand how they attain post traumatic stress disorder. We empathize. We can still see their humanity. But take a black child, raise them in underrepresented communities with lack of fair education, food and housing. Condition them to feel inferior because no positive imagery on the media looks like him. Arrest his father, uncles, and brothers for minor drug offenses. He, through no fault of his own lives his entire life in a concrete jungle. Police raid his home and instill fear in him. Stop him, frisk him, just for being in a brown skin suit. He's sent school malnourished on carbs and sugar -labeled ADHD. Kicked out -arrested on petty crimes - police quotas. How can we not empathize with this little boy? How can we explain Track Palin's crimes on PTSD, & ignore what black communities trauma & reaction to it?

I feel like the most racist people here are the people in BLM or any racial group that blindly assign race to certain issues. If you want to solve problems stop bringing up race and trying to fix it. It all comes down to who you are as a person. We should examine and try to fix what's wrong with the people in certain communities instead of just shouting racism as the problem. And yes I understand not all people do this, but if we won't to end racism we need to stop identifying race as a factor and look at the what these people are actually doing.

I wish it were so...but its not. There is a "second religion" in the United States called racism. Its chief tenet is that there are things called "races" and that one is the correct one to be and the rest are just not correct. Its usually, though not always, color coded. Its a mythology that has dogged the history of this country and assigned an idea that is unjust - that those not born white are convicted from birth, and it does not matter what they do, they are convicts. If at any time horrible things are done to them by the law, that is only justice. How do I know this? My father was black. His mother was white. I got the white, and became one of the privaleged. At first I lived in Mexico where my father had moved to in his youth. In Mexico its different. your color is just a descriptive of you. But then we came to the U S when I was 10 years old and I found things very different. We moved back in 1957, when Jim Crow was still king. After many years SOME things got better, but the myth of the convicted colors remained. I had rights and privelages that my parents and my brothers never had. I was given the benefit of the doubt just because my skin was what the U S myth said was correct. I hope some day this ends, because my children and grandchildren are brown and black (white, it seems does not seem to last very long as a genetic trait) and I want them in Country where it does not matter.

Thanks for being willing to share your thoughts and opinions. Everyone is needed in this conversation, if we want things to get better. I have to point out that your argument, to ignore the root cause of a problem, would be equivalent to a doctor ignoring the root cause of a sickness. Treating symptoms might offer some relief, but it does not solve the problem. Not talking about racism might make you feel more comfortable, and give you the false apperance that everything is okay, but it will not make things better. Many of the issues we want to tackle cannot be fixed without addressing racism. Racism is a valid issue for today. Some people look at racism and visualize someone from slavery or civil rights, who is being hateful and discriminatory. However, we see less of that racism today, so people have assumed it is no longer a real problem. However, racism runs deeper than that. It affects people's implicit bias and this affects a person's jugements and actions. This means that good people, who don't considered themselves racist, can still say and do racist things. It is a complicated issue and it can not be ignored, so I ask you to please reconsider your thoughts and have compassion and empathy for those struggling. An injustice to one of us, is an injustice to all of us; we are all connected, so we all have to be part of the solution.

A really great book that deals with this a lot is "Between the World and Me" by Ta-Nehisi Coates. He talks about what it was like growing up in a black body in Baltimore. Always used that diction. It wasn't that he was black. He just had a black body. Something that really stuck with me was when he said that "race is the child of racism, not the father." And I think that really speaks to one of the big problems with this overcoming racism. Even movements fashioned to get rid of racism such as 'Black Lives Matter' are really only perpetuating the myth of race. Really interesting to think about.
@MmmKayHuuNay
@MmmKayHuuNay 8 лет назад
We cannot claim race doesn't exist because it absolutely does and people are being killed for it and besides that it alters and plays a role in every single humans life a BIG one. If everyone was blind then sure race wouldn't exist but that's not the case dear. Sadly people see, categorize and stereotype each other based on their race. It's an issue and we have to do something about it, not pretend it doesn't exist. Sorry mate! Perhaps in another universe.
@CarverBain
@CarverBain 8 лет назад
+Captain Ford you're argument sort of proves my point. Race only exists because we've constructed our societies in that way. Sure, there are physically distinct groups of people, but we happen to treat certain groups in different ways. There isn't any biological reason we should separate people with dark skin into one huge group that society treats differently when we don't do that with people who have black hair. You say that if everyone were blind race wouldn't exist, and that's exactly what I'm saying. Race isn't anything more than something we assign people. What Ta-Nehisi Coates is saying is that because we have these predispositions about how to treat people, something we call racism, people interpret that difference in an easily identifiable way. Race. Point is, to get rid of racism, we need to get rid of race. I'm not saying race doesn't exist, just that it only exists inside of our heads.
@CarverBain
@CarverBain 8 лет назад
+Callie Sullivan absolutely. I don't think racism will disappears over night, and race certainly won't. But if we start spreading the idea that race is a myth, it may be as little as one lifetime before we start to see changes. Look at the strides gay rights have made in just 20 years.

I saw this and grabbed "Boy, Snow, Bird" by Helen Oyeyemi, “... it's not whiteness itself that sets Them against Us, but the worship of whiteness. Same goes if you swap whiteness out for other things-- fancy possessions for sure, pedigree, maybe youth too... we beat Them (and spare ourselves a lot of tedium and terror) by declining to worship.” I think it is much the same sentiment in different words; race exists as a product of an arbitrary cultural value system rather than as a fact of nature. Now it makes sense intellectually, but getting people to see it and recondition themselves to behave accordingly, that is a whole different ball game.

Nope, just pointing out how skewed your language choice seemed to me. Also your response doesn't exactly fit the scenario, if I remember correctly Mike Brown was unarmed.

+Amy L Yes, he was unarmed. However, he assaulted the officer including attempting to get his gun. Mike charged at the officer, the officer fired done shots off of center-mass, and was left choosing between his own life or Mike's life. tl;dr- Darren Wilson did what he had to in order to save his life from a known criminal and people should stop praising a false martyr.

Why should I accept being treated like trash by a system that is supposed to protect me ? Why do others get so angry that I want the same sense of security that they feel . How does me asking for a respect, protection and equality hurt them. Just because my skin may be darker than yours is no reason to act like I'm undeserving of common human decency. Legitimate question: when he says the "black people are more likely to..." And all of that, but how does that prove any form of racism..? How can it be proved that these people did not do something to deserve it? I'm just curious. Thank you.

You might want to check out the description for the video. But also, I think you might be trying to grasp at institutionalized/systemic racism, as opposed to individual racism--and that's what a lot of people are starting to talk about right now. The incidents of individual racism inform and influence the larger, bigger picture of societal racism as a whole, and that larger picture is what Hank is getting at--and the thing that most of the country is trying to discuss/change. Hope that helps. Best wishes.

My conservative 70 year old grandma had up till recently held the very common perspective among most middle class white Americans (at least most of the people I know in my small town in Kansas) seem to hold: that racism doesn't really exist anymore, and that Black Lives Matter is just an over-reaction, and a result of liberal politics and manipulation. She's not a bigot or a racist, she's a kind, generous woman, who is just mislead, misinformed and a little afraid. Yesterday I shared this video to Facebook, with a caption basically begging my white conservative friends family members to try and understand and empathize with black lives the way they had empathized with police officers after the Dallas and Kansas City shootings. Last night, with tears welling up in her eyes, she said to me "You're never too old to learn something new. Thank you for sharing that. I now see that black people have experienced things I don't understand, and I need to be more open minded and willing to listen." Hank, thank you so much for presenting this in such a concise, true, and compassionate way, that has allowed good people like my grandma to learn new things and approach things with more compassion. I am immensely thankful.

I have to say thank you so much for this video. For a long time I have been a nerdfighter and I love this community. I love John in his books and wisdom. Hank is amazing and hilarious with his pop punk band and I honestly think your two are amazing. This video makes me feel great. I feel heard and like you are trying to understand. I have to say that this is something that I really needed to see. Because you have such a HUGE platform and majority of people who part of the community are white people. And they may not be completely understanding of it. So I just want to say thank you so much. Thank you Hank for this. Thank you John. Thank you for this whole community and this place that I can come here to listen. I hope that a lot of nerdfighters take the time to listen to what you are saying in this video. Thank you so much.

This video to me, is a beautiful way of doing something. The truth is that allies have to lead other allies because explaining everything can get really exhausting when you're already living it. Sometimes it is hard to have an open mind when you have a strong opinion. This video, which I had considered clicking off of because I thought I understood what is happening and don't want to think about it, allowed me to experience both sides of the spectrum. Hank did not say anything biased, he said everything very open. Thank you for going into both dangerous careers (from being a police officer to being a performer) and about African-American lives because I don't think I would have listened any other way 💜

I love the fact that you emphasized "In this country". I'm not going to say discrimination only exists in the USA, but too many discussions of the topic implicitly assume the issue is the same all over the world, and most people online are for some reason still assumed to be american until proven innocent. So often I'm internally shouting at my screen that the problems and solutions discussed in videos only apply to america, and that children (and people of other ages, but less so) in the rest of the world, many of which get most of their information from youtube and similar websites, will get skewed ideas of the issues at hand, not realising that the maker of the video they are watching is only speaking about the situation in the USA.

I think a lot of times people from a different background just have a hard time understanding struggles that they've never seen, and therefore can't even imagine. I see white people dis-valuing the black movement, men dis-valuing feminist struggles, wealthy people dis-valuing the hardship of poverty, and a lot more. All humans are good, but it's just so hard for us to accept other people's word for it and realize that we don't understand everything - maybe BECAUSE we're hungry for truth, for evidence we can see and touch.
@LucaMasters

True. Other people's experiences will never be as salient to us as our own are. Combine that with the Just-world fallacy and you get a world of people assuming well-off people earned it and suffering people deserve it.

Everytime I hear of another terrorist attack or case where a minority is hurt or killed by a police officer or bigot, I don't even feel fear anymore. All I feel is dread, despair at the creeping certainty that one day I'll be among the unavenged deceased. That no matter how i live my life, just for living it my life is forfeit to the fear and hate of others. And my death will become just another talking point over which nothing will be done. So thank you for trying to understand. And I am sorry you had to.

In conversations like this one I often think of a quote from Howard Zinn that states "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you don't listen to it, you will never know what justice is". I've noticed that there is a lot of debate in the comments surrounding the statistics of the situation, but no matter what side the statistics point to, you cannot discredit the voices of a whole group of people who are saying that they feel scared and oppressed. Whether or not they are right, you cannot discredit the fact that they feel these things because you are not them, and cannot experience the world in the way they do. If the black community in America says that this racism is real, and it is something that they have to deal with, and it is something that scares them, what authority do others have to tell them that they don't see or feel these things?

A large portion of my family has a stereotypically deep south, conservative, "All Lives Matter" view on life. I love them, and they're not unconscionable people or at all unintelligent. They're uninformed, and confront minimal challenges to their opinions. Because of them I grew up with many biases I wholeheartedly reject today. Please, Hank, keep creating videos like this, whether the subject is BLM, LGBTQ+ advocacy, Women's Rights, climate change, openmindedness, or anything else that divides us, because slowly but surely you, John, and many others have influenced the way I form my opinions, have made me a more openminded, understanding person, and given me the strength to change my mind. It's not that I disagree with what's being said, but I think it's important to ask what it means in terms of action. People have been saying that racism is wrong for a long enough time that simply saying it again lacks purpose. This video--along with most of its counterparts in social media--have a certain emotional resonance but nothing actionable. Give me a specific unjust law you want overturned, or a particular malpractice you want to raise awareness for and I'm all ears. But taking precious time and energy to repeatedly connect emotionally to a large, vague problem I already know about? I don't know, guys. I DO want to be a good person and make the world a better place, but I don't see how re-acknowledging a general prejudice in society every other day effectively does that. That, in a nutshell, is why a number of movements in this vein rub me the wrong way. I suppose there's nothing wrong with people getting emotional energy from having these repeated emotional connections. Maybe it works for others, but from an outside perspective it seems almost like an addiction. It feels like many are more interested in that emotional high than they are in actually trying to solve parts of these problems, which is far more difficult.

Sometimes just bringing it up to light for others is enough for them to realize it is going on as not everyone is aware of the privilege they hold because of their race/gender/sexuality etc. I completely agree that action needs to be taken instead of us just stating the problem with some emotional connection, but for the time being, it's a little difficult to mention laws that have to be overturned or things that need to be changed when it comes to prejudice. In reality, it's PEOPLE and not the laws themselves that cause these problems, as they are used to the mindset of: "this is how it has always been". I'm not disagreeing with you, just pointing out that speaking up about these kinds of issues are the only solace people have, as they only have their voice to do so. Standing up any other way could potentially cost them their lives, as we have seen countless times over in history. Not just for the black lives matter movement, but in general.
@PanicProvisions

I'm black and sooo glad that I live in Germany, where I don't have to deal with all these issues myself. I am never afraid for my live when I leave the door and my biggest concern for my safety is traffic usually, with the police being the least of my worries. I'm not saying that to show off or anything weird like that. I just think it might contribute to showcase how diverse all our experiences can be. I feel for the people of colour in the U.S., especially in the poor urban areas where the problem seem to be at their highest.

On your statistics, I was wondering on the first one where you say a black person is more likely to be pepper sprayed, is the amount of people that actively resist arrest factored in?

And as well for the statistic about harsher prison sentences, are repeat offenses factored into the statistics. And about Brock Turner, I think the issue there is that he was rich and a possible Olympian, change Brock's skin color and nothing else, I think that he has a very big chance of getting the exact same sentence. There could be racism in the justice department, but I just want to be through.

My mom had gone into a T-Mobile the other day to return a charger. I stayed in the car as I have health issues, and I felt like my body was going to explode. It took her a while to come back. When she finally did, she told me about an experience she had just encountered. An older black woman had stopped my mom to say that she loved her. My mom had never met her before, but in that moment two human beings stopped and expressed love and hugged. Why? Because so many people will judge due to the color of your skin, and to that woman and my mom, all it was was skin. It is just the outer covering of another human. The woman told my mom that she couldn't handle the hate in this world. She had made it her mission to tell every Caucasian she saw that she loved them. That is powerful. That is the definition of humanity. I cried. We need more love in this world.
