Day 4 of the 30 Day Challenge and one of our lambs has scours! Not necessarily a big problem but troubling for the new shepherds.

Hey hey! Just came over from the Justin Rhode's channel. Love what you guys are doing! Can't wait to watch the rest of your videos! And I love just sitting around watching my animals as well! Way better than television any day! ;)

Hi Andrew! Thanks for checking out our videos. I'm glad you found us (via Justin). What kind of animals do you have?

+The Grass-fed Homestead My wife and I are actually in transition right now but next month we're hopefully starting a flock of 30ish laying hens and maybe a few goats soon after. :)

That's great! We want to have 30 hens also but we're starting a little smaller and will work up to it.

+The Grass-fed Homestead we have 6 chickens and 2 ducks now but where we're moving to we'll have a lot more land to use so the possibilities have really opened up! I haven't watched your chicken videos yet but I'm excited to watch your process and see what decisions you all made concerning your flock!

Great entertainment! We sit on our back porch while watching the Mason bee's fly in and out of their nesting tubes lol

I miss being able to do that. The weather has been so lousy lately.

That's what we did every evening, except with our chickens. We sat and watched them and my son hooked up his phone and played chicken voices. They just stared and stared at it. Also, they loved to listen to music. He said we should get wireless speakers and set them up, but we haven't done that yet.

Let me know if you try that with the music. That is neat

ah watched this one...somehow I missed it. Wow those boys were little when you first got them. Fun to see this & how they took to you later on so you didn't have to run after them o.- cute video.

Yes, they were small. After having them a couple months I thought they hadn't grown much. I went back a watched these older videos and realized they had indeed grown...a lot!

I know! In the evening, the lambs get playful and put on quite a show, running and jumping etc.

New to sheep keeping and one of ours has scours which I’m guessing is from the new lush grass they were introduced to for a couple of hours yesterday. What did you do afterwards? Is it better to keep them on the new grass to get their bodies adapting to it or is it better to return them to what they know and then reintroduce? Thank you so much for your videos, they really do help :)

Stress can also cause it. I kept mine on the same grass and it cleared up. If it is only one having the issue, you can leave them on the lush grass and treat the one with some OTC diarrhea medicine.

@@TheGrassfedHomestead Thank you! Really appreciate your response! We kept them on the usual paddock and she seems to be already returning to normal. I'm going to limit the amount of time they go out there tomorrow and make sure they've eaten a good deal of hay beforehand to see if that discourages them from wolfing down the grass so much! Thanks again for your response!

Is their droppings good for fertilizing gardens?

Well that's fantastic then! There are some sheep and goats in the field next to my parents yard (my mom keeps an eye on the animals for the owner), and I told them I was going to come collect up some of the mess to take over to my garden area this fall... sounds like I might have a good plan! :) They have several goats, 1 sheep - at this time, and 2 donkeys for protectors. By the way, I'm really glad Justin mentioned you on his vlogs. I've really enjoyed watching all of your video, and should be up to date on them today or tomorrow (I'm watching while at work! LOL). I feel like I'm on an adventure with your family, and with Justin's. :)

Awesome Julie! I'm glad you're on the adventure with us! Though, don't get fired because you're watching our videos ;) We're also really grateful for the mention by Justin. Him and his family are inspirational. Just a caution with bringing in the manure - try to find out if the owners used any chemical wormers on the animals. If you collect manure from animals who had recently been given a chemical wormer, the chemical passes on into the garden when you spread it around there. I've heard/read anecdotal stories of where the chemicals also killed the good worms in the soil. Obviously not good for your garden.

Good point! I know that the grass in the field is untreated/sprayed, but I didn't think about meds. I'll ask about that! I think I'm pretty safe here at work. I have a boss who is very understanding about my time once I've done what needs to be done. :DI love seeing your story from your homestead beginning, and your family is every bit as inspiring to me as Justin is. I'm so glad to be in a time when all of your information and trials are accessible. I'm learning so much, and it's all thanks to families who are willing to be honest examples. :) Thank you again for all your time, effort, and huge amount of cuteness from your son! :)
