Lions and other wild mammals only mate for reproduction reasons. well, except for baboons, dolphins and chimpanzees. lionesses are receptive to mating for three or four days within a widely variable reproductive cycle.
During this time a pair generally mates every 20-30 minutes, with up to 70 or more times per day. The female usually invites the male to have intercourse by assuming a position known as lordosis. and at the end of copulation, the male may gently bite the back of her neck. During copulation and the female may purr loudly.
