@Big Al Property prices in HK are at an all time high, and many younger people can't see themselves being able to afford their own home in their lifetime. There's quite a large gap between the haves and have-nots in Hong Kong. Yes, it's been very prosperous for many over the decades, but for many more it's been increasingly hard.

I don't think property prices are going to stay high after the protests. So they might have actually caused a positive side effect from all this.

@Big Al I generally agree with what you're saying. Tourism is (up until now!) huge business in HK and is funded not only by foreign countries, but by mainland Chinese. A lot of manufacturing has moved to China in the last 25 years, whereas a lot was done in HK in the 60s, 70s and 80s. However, HK companies rely on China for a manufacturing base, so money still flows back into HK that way. Having said that, if average workers are finding it harder and harder to afford to buy property, no amount of tourism and industry is going to help this. Yes, people need to look at building their marketable skillsets in any situation, and stop blaming external influences unless there is a very clear cause. The riots are only hurting HK economically. Tourism is dropping from both the mainland and other countries, local businesses are shutting early to avoid being destroyed by rioters, people are being stopped from travelling by blockades and protests. None of this is helping anything, apart from giving fodder to outside countries to censure China.

China tried to make a lot of bills and laws that make HK less independent. HK was an independent “territory” after Britain gave it to China. They tried to add new laws like a HK resident can be extradited to China for court and the reason they started protesting again is because China tried to add a new bill on HK saying anyone that boos the national anthem can be arrested and imprisoned for up to 3 years. Some of the people from HK are from the mainland and so a lot of them know how bad it is in mainland China with the communist party so they really don’t want HK to end up like them. And now HK wants to be a democracy also.
