In this video I go over how to add rotopax mounts to your spare tire so you can carry extra fuel on those long trips off the beat and path. Up until I headed to the Georgia traverse, fuel was never really an issue on any of our trips, being so far away from a gas station got me to thinking about how to carry extra fuel and of course rotopax came to mind. With the rockslide engineering spare tire mounting system it makes it real easy to mount a couple rotopax 2 gallon fuel cans.

Easy install. I did the same for my spare on the Bronco. I also have the 3rd brake light ring inside the spare. Great setup. 4gls is great to have. Used them once on an 8 day trip. I'm also exploring getting that rack that goes on the spare tire (like Justin B. McBride's Bronco) probably put the tailgate reinforcement bracket on along with it when I do it. Great video - two thumbs up!

Awesome and thank you, having that extra fuel really gives peace of mind and makes a difference, i have had to use ours several times on long trips off the highway, and better yet i have been able to help others who had run out on the trail paying it forward if you will. Hope you are enjoying the bronco, thanks for checking out the channel!

Awesome, thanks for the comment and it is a great setup and while you may not think you need the fuel, when you do, you do!!! Sounds simple but when your in the middle of nowhere and the gas light comes on, its a huge relief to be able to have it

Maybe I missed it, but is there some way of locking the ratchet strap? Seems like a waste to have locking rotopacks mounted on an unsecured strap.
@FischerJeepAdventures
@FischerJeepAdventures 3 месяца назад
You didnt there is not a way to lock the ratchet straps, plus they can be cut with a knife if people are determined, the lock on the rotopax is cheap insurance to make it difficult to take them, sure they can try and undo the straps and then get the assembly off and try and runaway with the entire mess, but i am going to make it hard, the harder things are to take the less likely the opportunistic criminal will act. So to your point yes they can still be taken but like I said I am gonna make it difficult to do so
@CoreyBrass

I use a similar system... but with the much cheaper Long Haul cans from China. I put a lock on my strap but like he said, anyone can cut the strap or just siphon the gas. Siphoning the gas is how I'd prefer it to be stolen if it happens because that is the cheapest and easiest thing to replace. When it comes to this stuff, my thoughts are just to make it so some impulsive kid walking by can't take my shit. Anyone who comes to my jeep with a plan, I have very little defense from. I'm a believer that most of these crimes are targets of opportunity, and even a simple heavy-duty ziptie on the strap handle can make a kid walk away. If he can cut the tie, he can cut the strap. 🤷‍♂️

Thinking of shipping a Pajero Mini from Japan to where I am in Utah. It would be a blast to take it on some trails. Those little things only have a 7 gallon tank, so strapping 4 gallons onto the spare tire is quite a lot! I might get one of these if I get one of those little rigs.

@FischerJeepAdventures Год назад
The ratchet strap does not lock from a security standpoint just in the form of the ratchet mechanism that secures the mounts to the spare tire. The locks are on the rotopax assembly itself, the handles for each rotopax have a lock in them, you can get them without locks but i opted for the locks just for deterrence, i also run a cable lock through the tray and box system and spare tire mount to just secure it to the vehicle.

Studies have shown that the smell of petrol in your car, is no where near as offensive as the smell of an incinerated body after being rear ended, spraying flammable liquid over the entire vehicle, pending an ensuing inferno.
@FischerJeepAdventures
@FischerJeepAdventures 2 месяца назад
Well thats certainly a perspective that is yours, one thing you forget is the persistent exposure to the vapor that comes from gasoline is toxic to your lungs, cause a myriad of cancers, gets infused into every cloth surface, contaminates anything edible inside your vehicle, and last but not least creates when containing inside a closed vehicle a potential explosive environment as the vapor is extremely flammable, while yea if you are rear ended by tractor trailer or large enough suv to break the rotopax gas will leak but at that point its the least of your worries as the damage done to your vehicle most likely has a far greater effect on your life and i would much rather have gas spilling on the outside than on the inside not to mention the thousands of miles you exposed yourself and everything you own to the gas vapor you put in your vehicle
@danwinters3948
@danwinters3948 Год назад
why lock it when you can un do the strap or cut it ?
@FischerJeepAdventures
@FischerJeepAdventures Год назад
Great question, like with most things locks only deter they dont prevent, The way i run the straps the ratchet is u der the tire and when the tailgate is closed its would nearly impossible to release them, they could cut the straps but the rotopax are still locked to the plates and that would be a super awkward thing to try and run away with and the tray is cable locked to the tire. So all in all you are correct some one could try and steal the entire set up, but I am not going to make it easy, thanks for checking out the channel!
@joesheffield9144
@joesheffield9144 2 года назад
What is preventing from someone stealing all of the parts from the tire? Couldn’t someone easily and quickly take all the parts off the tire? Are you using or is there anything that locks the straps?
@FischerJeepAdventures
@FischerJeepAdventures 2 года назад
Joe, great question, i use a locking cable that locks the tire tray and roam box that i built to the spare tire, the straps that hold the rotopax run through the trays base so essentially yes someone could undue the ratchet or cut the strap and take the assemblies but since i used locking mounts even if they got them off its probably not worth the effort all for a 80.00 gas can that only holds 2 gallons, the reality is if someone intends to take something they will, but i think i have made it difficult enough that most folks would not mess with it or atleast i hope so

What if you need to use the spare tire ? Will the Rotopax mount back onto a flat tire?
@FischerJeepAdventures
@FischerJeepAdventures 2 года назад
Eriq thats a great question, I never really thought about that, i think that given the size of the plates that it would, but if that happened i would use my tire repair kit and plug the leak so i could reinflate the tire if at all possible. Great question!!

@FischerJeepAdventures
@FischerJeepAdventures 10 месяцев назад
I wish people would just keep there hands to themselves, i am not aware of a locking ratchet, I guess you could try and take a long shank padlock and run it through both parts of the ratchet system to keep it from opening, i will have to look but i think the ones i bought are big enough to do that, thats all i can think of

Rich, i am with you, with the system i have set up and the locking mounts it would be really difficult and really not worth it to steal anything, i only have the setup when i am on the trail on a trip and since i camp, i am really never leaving my jeep anywhere for any extended amount of time un attended. I have done everything i can to make theft not easy or opportunistic and hopefully that is enough of a deterrent. I just dont think the juice is worth the squeeze for what a would be thief would get vrs the risk
