On this “On the Hunt” episode despite trying to cut back, I still can’t stay away from exploring old iron. This time I’m back at the local auction yard to look at potential future projects. I would really like to add a long hood 379 Pete to my collection someday. Found a nice one that needed work but sold for a little more than I could afford at this time with my three other active projects. While walking the yard I also found an old General Military truck and an early 70’s Hayes Clipper (rare truck indeed) with an old Cummins that needed a little convincing to start. Hope you enjoy following me around…
Subscribe for notifications for future episodes that I do my best to upload new videos weekly on Thursdays and enjoy watching the progress of my #ProjectSnowman 1979 Kenworth W900A Smokey and the Bandit project, the ongoing #LittleByLittle Peterbilt 359 restoration and the upcoming #IronDuke Kenworth K100 cabover I’m planning to build up like the one used in the 70’s trucking movie High Ballin’ with Jerry Reed and Peter Fonda.

When I was traveling for a living back in the late 80’s though the early 2000’’s I used to see a fair number of “Bull Haulers” in the southwest with a wing on the hood and enough chicken lights that they could be seen from the ISS (International Space Station) along with every piece of chrome and stainless that could be found at a truck-stop. It is my understanding that with few exceptions all US military vehicles have been required to have auto-tranny’s in them since the early 1980’s because the military wanted vehicles that AISWH (Any Idiot Steering Wheel Holder) can drive because of the number of enlisted motor pool personnel suffering from chronic cases AUWTDA (Ate Up With The Dumb Ass) making it damn near impossible for them to be taught how to drive vehicles with manual transmissions.

PACCAR owns Kenworth and Peterbilt, something everybody knows. They also own DAF trucks from the Netherlands. So those little Peterbilt cabovers are DAF trucks as well as the "new" PACCAR motor that has been in service in Europe for years.

@@struedel25 I wonder why KW does that. What's funny is in the older A models, with a 3408 or KT Cum-apart, you had to order the long hood. With a 359, you could get either in a short hood. And KW never offered either engine (or 92 Series) in the B model - just the 3406, L10, and BC engines.

Love the old Clipper! Drove a couple on the Island (Vanc Island, that is) -- including a cab over. It had instruments mounted above the windshield like an old plane! The last one i drove was hauling Vancouver City garbage in 1995, up the Fraser Canyon to Cache Creek. It was a blue straight truck like this one, but the canny owner let it out to all the equipment companies to put their experimental stuff in it -- was the first truck i ever drove that was digital and we had to download through a big greasy curly cord at the fuel pumps at the end of our ten hour shift. That thing had a 600 Cat, tridem drive, special Toyo Tires and i can't remember what else. A tridem B set with, if i remember right, 147000 lb rating. Garbage up, chips back. Thing was, by then trucks had gotten pretty smooth (drove a KW anteater before that for Esso and it was like a BMW!). Because of the extra power (for those days) and load, this was old school rough -- brought back a lot of memories. As did seeing this one! tnx.

The red/white cabover isn’t European. The only Paccar brand sold in Europe is DAF. And this definitely isn’t a current DAF model or one sold in the last 40 years. Maybe that the chassis is similar to a DAF but the cab sure isn’t.

Hey man allthough i love the look and culture surrounding US style trucks, you cant deny that they are huuugely inneficient with the narrow cabs and the LEAF SPRINGS??!. Also the dash design is one of the most outdated things ever. I also have to ask what the point of US custom trucks having about 3 meters of empty frame ? Wouldnt that make the frame weaker and the load possibbilities limited? Not to mention the factr that you have a ton of blindspots and are alot less maneuverable. But i think the sleepers usually look so much better, man if people could have that here in europe...

the way I see it, as an owner operator, or a trucking company with multiple trucks, (and yes I was an owner operator, but I had a box truck and let me tell you, my driving style changed when it was my money going into the tank) per a quick google search, a driver is expected to drive anywhere from 285 to 430 miles a day, so call it 300 miles a day and a driver could expect to be on the road upwards of 300 days out of a year for an over the road driver so with my crappy math skills that comes out to around 90,000 miles a year. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but over the course of 90,000 miles in a year, that 1 gallon extra mile would come out to $10,000 per truck assuming fuel prices of 3 dollars a gallon for diesel. (assuming 5 miles per gallon for the "square nose" and six miles per gallon for the aerodynamic cabs.) again, my math skills suck and I ran out of fingers and toes when I was trying to figure this out so I could be wrong. so, that one extra gallon fuel conservation per gallon of gas ads up, especially if you are running multiple trucks

That's stupid to me cause it such a waste of materials for something just for show. If your gonna put it on make it functional. That peterbilt you looked at was probably blocked off inside if it was the factory stacks.

All those old Generals are automatic- but not like you think. It uses an air shift where you select the gear and it shift with an air ram for you. Kind of an auto-manual hybrid. They are also 6x6 and the front wheels drive too. And I think I saw the controls for the tire air pressure system on the dash, so it's probably disconnected but it has the ability to drop the air in the tires to 8-10 lbs for mud and sand then air them up again from inside the cab. I saw one being used to drag trailers up to silvertip mine in the yukon and it was absolutely insane what they could drag a trailer up at 5-10kph, mud, 10-11% grades and shale roads rutted out 8" deep from the rock trucks using the same road to carry down tailings

Yeah someone with ath Blue truck crammed with parts that was a restore job either had spent enough couldn't finish it for whatever reason or the wife said me or the truck and the truck went to auction....lol I am sure someone that wanted a project took a chance in it and had a look at what was there and got an idea of what it would take to finish it. The old army truck good shape for it age and the rubber on those tires was like next to new and if the mileage was correct that didnt get alot of use, but someone bought it for a little fun you can bet, hey why not if you have a few dollars kicking around, might be a back breaker to go for a long haul in but doubt that is what someone has in mind especially with that suspension but someone will get a kick out of it. I love waiting for automatic transmissions, the Trump stating “no”. Making me laugh. Thanks for making great videos.

I'm pretty shure the paccar is smaller so it can fit in the aerodynamic paccar trucks.

Only the day cab trucks have the fake stack. I'm pretty sure the day cab Pete has a fake stack too.

Love the Hayes. I don't think the price was very high considering there are so few of them left. They were built by Hayes, then by Mack I think and finally a Peterbuilt version. I may be wrong. I'm old and my mind doesn't work very well.

Signal Company, parent firm of Mack Trucks, aquired controlling share in Hayes Manufacturing in 1969 and renamed the company Hayes Trucks. Then in 1975 Signal sold it all to PACCAR who then decided to shutdown all the Hayes plants 😖

@@TwinStix They should open back up and start building the COE's again. Right now cabovers are all the rage. I guess that fad will continue until the guys all get bad shoulders from pulling themselves up in the cabs and bad backs from beat-in and bang-in up and down the highways.
