I worked for two decades in the radio/TV/interview business. Tommy is an absolute dream to work with. All I'd have to do is say "Hello" and then shut up.
I was blessed to see Tommy perform two nights ago at the Sheldon here in St. Louis. It was the best concert of my life... and I've seen many. Bonus... I met Tommy at a meet & greet before the show-- a birthday gift from my wife. He is kind. Generous. Thoughtful. Shows genuine interest in everyone, their questions, their presence. So impressed. The performance was unlike anything I've ever experienced that touched on every emotion. You will be astonished. You'll laugh (he is hilarious when he wants to be). You'll cry (happy tears). You will be happy--Tommy's goal. As he says, he is in the happy business. It's 48 hours after the show and I'm still feeling the love... and definitely feeling the happy. Thank you, Tommy for the inspiration and the happy. I can't wait to experience your show again!! 😎🎸👍
I grew up listening to Tommy and his brother Phil playing small gigs in Australia in the 80s. He was brilliant then , the envy of the local guitarists , and such a humble down to earth guy . In the intervening 40+ years he has only gotten better .
Just watched this again and one thing I think is kind of missed ... under-appreciated, maybe...? Is the amount of work and sacrifice that Tommy has clocked to get to where he is. Consider how long he has been a professional touring musician, his amazing back catalogue, his session work back here in Australia... doing 320-odd shows a year to build that following... this is barely touching the surface. He is a phenomenal performer and still absolutely loves what he does. Blows me away. I wish someone would do a doco about his life, that would be awesome. 💜
@@CodyJungGuitar Thank you. I generally listen to things like this while doing other tasks. As I listened to this interview it occured to me that I had stopped doing everything but listening. What a splendid teaching on self-growth, motivation and personal well-being. It! was! awesome!
This is was a wonderful interview. Tommy opened himself completely . If you keep watching it at least 4 times and you'll see that Tommy was actually mentoring us. I' so happy to have run into this super interview. What a wonderful and Tommy is. I hope some day I'll get to meet him.
Going to see Tommy on June 11th. I bought VIP meet and greet tickets and am hoping I can get him to sign my favorite guitar. Never been more excited in my life! Started playing guitar 5 months ago and my life has been better ever since. Finding Tommy Emmanuel on youtube has been my biggest inspiration and am truly thankful for all he does.
That’s so great! You’re going to have the time of your life! Very few musical events compare to seeing Tommy in concert. He’s amazing. Then, couple that with the meet and greet? You’re going to have a blast. Also, Tommy definitely signs guitars - you should be good to go on that. The only time I’ve seen him hesitate is when it’s a vintage or otherwise super collectible guitar.
Tommy is a great Australian ambassador no doubt about it. For people that don’t really know much about Australia and Australian’s Tommy is a perfect example of a “typical” Aussie, straight talking, generous, a cheeky sense of humour and most importantly down to earth honesty . We value realness and honesty in our exchanges the most. Love ya Tommy
This is why Tom is the greatest performing guitar player on earth. He’s such an amazing dude! He’s played at the pub down the road from my house in Essendon Victoria when he was a young man in Australia!
That’s a great interview Cody. Tommy is such a true to the audience, hard working and humble entertainer. An entertainer that never forgets his fan base. And his talent is out of this world.
Thank you so much! Tommy is absolutely all about his fans, you’re right. He has the utmost respect for the audience and what he is there to do - perform and entertain.
TE is such a good and decent humble human being. We can all take heed from him. I'm so glad I've spent years learning his music. Its an anti depressant :}
I've watched Tommy on RU-vid over the last few years, but just saw him live last week. I was so enthused and inspired by his concert, that I went home, put new strings on one of my guitars, and am playing more than I have for years!
Tommy you are a total inspiration to my guitar journey, I was lucky enough to catch a gig in Brisbane 30 years ago and was blown away! but your life experience and advice on success in the Happiness business was amazing! keep going strong mate! You legend!
Thank you for doing this interview with TE. Nice surprise to see you two jam at the end too. I had to lol when he referred to his guitar "its just a hunk of wood" looking forward to part Ii.
Bruce Dickinson does hype himself up for a show though 💁♂️😄 Love Tommy, such a genuine and inspiring human being. Insane player, thanks for everything!
Tommy really is the consummate professional of all guitar players. Over half a century of public performances and no resting on his laurels. A true artist.
This is probably the best interview ever of Tommy! This is part of what makes Tommy have a following - he’s very much in touch with human nature and being centered and our place in the world. He’s never lost the central piece of what it is to be human, a great musician and all the in between. THIS is why we all love Tommy! He’s the best guitar player I’ve ever seen in person on stage twice, but he’s very in touch with why he’s there, who got him there and in touch with those who want to see him. We all know why. We love this guys music but what and how he presents the best of one’s self. Kudos, Cody! Kudos, Tommy!!
Great job, your interview style is very calm and quiet engaging. Very nice . Seen tommy a million times and have hung with him often . Amazing guy and you did the right thing and just let him go off. That’s Tommy . Well done sir
As others have already noted, Tommys the real thing, he's genuine, an enormous passion for what he does, no surprise really, he's an Aussie :) A great interview.
Thank you! Yeah, he is most definitely the real thing. It struck me just how passionate he still is for all things guitar and music. The fact that he mentioned that on his days off at home, he still will just swing by the local guitar stores (Gruhn's and Carter's) just for fun really hit home, haha.
One day I’d love to see Tommy perform….he’s one of THE guitarists…a natural. But just listen to this interview! Not only is he a brilliant player he is also humble and straight speaking. I couldn’t disagree with anything he said. He has my respect as well as admiration 👍🍷.
What an influencial man he is.... I can keep listening to him forever... God bless you TE.... Thanx for taking us through your journey off the road and on the road... .Thank you Mr Cody for bringing him on your show..... Love from Nepal 🌹🌹🌹🌹🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵
What I found the most amazing in this beautiful interview is Tommy, or should I say Mister Emmanuel, does not seem to quite realize how much he is a heroe to us, how much inspiring and truly exemplary. Thanks a million for being yourself as beautifully and truly as you are.
Tommy is such a gem of a human being, He's also monster guitar player, on a high level... And I'm very luck to have seen him live multiple times, and met him at meet and greets, he is a gentleman, and sincere as they come...
Well, this is really great interview. Thank you! It was so nice to hear that Tommy appreciated the support that people in Russia, Ukraine and Poland provided to him. I am Ukrainian and I attended his shows twice, including meet & greet session in Poland. Look forward to meeting him again!
Great interview, thanks for sharing 👍 He´s a great artist with both legs on solid ground. Another reason except from his exceptional skills why people respect him so much. If only our politicians approached their job with just 10% of his enthusiasm, the world would be a much better place 😊
It is so wonderful to hear the truth of hard work, persistence, and self reliance. Nothing replaces it for getting the results you want in life. Great interview.
Great interview, what a lovely man tommy really is, he deserves every accolade that comes his way, for all the hard work beautiful songs, and performances he has given across the years. for everyone.Thank you so much tommy for sharing your talent with everyone. Andy. Scotland.
Thank you! There’s no way I could pass up the opportunity to pick with Tommy. Haha. It’s just a matter of hanging on tight and doing the best you can once you start!
Best Tommy interview ever. I have been waiting for insight on all of the things discussed for so long. Most interviews cover the same old stock questions....this was amazing.
Thank you so much! I certainly hope we can do a part two with Tommy at some point. If so, is there anything you would like to know that you haven’t heard him asked before?
Tommy's singing and playing and Stage performance is unmatched! What a talented and yes the word talented is an understatement but what I talented humble human being!
He's definitely right about the fact that having few guitars already tuned differently as a professional is the best way of playing and optimizing your live performance, but not all of us are endorsed by brands, not all of us can afford multiple 3000 euros Maton Guitars to play ! I play between 30 to 50 shows a year but I do not have the 10 000 euros for 3 amazing guitars, I can afford just one unfortunately, and I already feel blessed because some people cannot afford any at all
This was such a very well crafted interview, well done. I love how Tommy approaches interviews with the same positive energy and enthusiasm as he does playing the guitar, and is so generous sharing his knowledge. I really hope you were serious about a Part 2... 💜
@@CodyJungGuitar I agree with a comment below - I think this is probably Tommy's finest interview, especially for fans who have seen him interviewed many times before. You asked very precise questions and Tommy responded so openly - giving very detailed, personal answers about aspects i've never seen him mention before. I've met Tommy myself, a couple of times - and he's just as you expect him to be - friendly, generous, straight-talking and humorous. The hardest working man in showbusiness - force of nature.
Thank you!! That’s always the challenge with interviewing someone like Tommy (people who have been interviewed a lot) - trying to come up with questions that haven’t been asked and answered a bunch of times before. So, getting a compliment like that means a lot, thank you again! Also, yes, Tommy is a very hard working, but also kind and generous person. Couldn’t have said it better myself!
Thank you!! Yeah, he is incredibly down to earth. Just the fact that he was even willing to do this interview - he did not need to do this, ya know? At the level that he’s at, he could have easily said no, and not lost anything. However, his willingness to be part of the guitar community really shows just how down to earth he is (not to mention just how passionate he is about guitar!).
This is great information for the performing, musician. Tommy shares the overall methodology & discipline that has assisted him in his success. What a great presentation. Check out the end when they both play! Thank you both. 🌄👍
Cody, I look forward to your interview's. You ask all the questions that a musician wants the answers to. I learned a lot from this interview that will help me with my music career & the CD I am in the studio recording. Tks again! Vince James (Ajello)
One of the best Tommy Emmanuel interviews I've seen....There is a lot inside Tommy...It's a pleasure to see it come out....Very informative interview, very interesting.
Thank you so much! When Tommy and I sat down to do this, you could tel how passionate he was about wanting to pass on as much information as possible. I still feel like we just scratched the surface though, so hopefully we can do a Part 2!
Thank you, and thank you so much for following the channel! I have one more interview coming out in the next couple weeks, then it's back on the hunt for more!
I couldn`t agree more with Tom on learning the guitar, it couldn`t be more easier now. When I was growing 40 years ago it was work it out in your head by listening to a record or go hire a guitar teacher !!
@@CodyJungGuitar and I just finished. He's my idol. Everything he said was words to live by. Thank you for doing this, it's one of the most profound musician interviews I've heard.
Great job Cody!! You really have a way of getting these great artist to open up and feel comfortable with you. As a person Tommy reminds me of Gilmore 😆 I love his actions.
Thank you! I’ve never made the Gilmore connection myself (I admittedly have not spent a lot of time studying Pink Floyd stuff), but I’m sure Tommy would take that as a compliment! Haha.
@@CodyJungGuitar I love the chapter markers, it’s very helpful to come back and rewatch the video. Also allows you take a break and watch the video in smaller chunks throughout the day. That way you don’t necessarily have to dedicate a whole continuous hour to watch the video start to finish, and even if you do, it really helps to go back and rewatch key parts that spoke to you. Thanks for all your hard work!
Thank you for saying that! The markers are a new thing I’m trying, and it’s awesome to get feedback like this. I’m trying to figure all of this out as I go, so this type of stuff really helps me know what I should do for future videos!
@@CodyJungGuitar my pleasure. The little things and attention to detail really make a huge difference. All that extra detailed effort on top of your contributions I'm sure are an extra pain, so thanks for all your hard work for the community!
i think he was talking about tim henson from polyphia. hes a phenomenal guitar player and song writer. and i love how real tommy is. and how he realizes that opinions dont matter and they only effect you if you let them.
I was super curious about who he was trying to remember as well! Also, yes, I could not agree more with Tommy’s view of other people’s opinions. It was so fantastic hearing him say that.
Oh, Tommy. You are probably the most unsung musical export Australia has ever produced. You go through the interview espousing toughness, tenacity and a supreme work ethic that got you to where you are now. You encourage others to do the same, whether in this field or any other field. You say to learn from the best and to allow their ideas to stimulate your creative juices moving forward. All advice about how to do a better job with a great work ethic that can showcase ones talent with all human beings around the world. And then you say this 44:27 - 44:57 For crying out loud, take credit for your hard earned 60+ years of blood sweat and tears. You and you alone (along with the help of the people you mention in this interview) are the one/s who deserve all the prosperity and accolades that have come your/their way. Do not sell yourself short in any way shape or form. It saddened me to hear this part of the interview from a man who takes nothing for granted and stands tall in his chosen field of excellence. And then at 45:40 - 46:30 you speak like a true Aussie and take no sh*t. Love it. You are still the GOAT though Tommy.😊
