"On the Sunny Side of the Street" is a 1930 song composed by Jimmy McHugh, with lyrics by Dorothy Fields. Having become a jazz standard, it was played (usually as an instrumental) by such greats as Dave Brubeck, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Errol Garner, Dizzy Gillespie, and Count Basie.
Frankie Laine had a hit with his recording, and the song also was recorded by other leading vocalists, including Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra. Arguably the best known arrangement is found in the 1945 record by Tommy Dorsey and the Sentimentaists. The children's group Sharon Lois and Bram recorded a version for their Sing A to Z recording. Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt recorded their well-known version on their Sonny Side Up album.
On The Sunny Side Of The Street
(Fields/McHugh)
Grab your coat and get your hat
Leave your worries on the doorstep
Just direct your feet
On the sunny side of the street
Don't you hear that pitter-pat
You know that happy tune is your step
Life could be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street
I used to walk in the shade with my blues on parade
Now you know I'm not afraid... I guess this rover done crossed over
If I never have a cent
I'd be rich as Rockefeller
Gold dust at my feet
On the sunny side of the street

The music from this time period is fabulous and nostalgic. The musicians were excellent and very talented. I wish music like this was still written and performed. It was a fantastic time period in music and history.

Thank you. My granny sang this because she was so happy when I rented a luxurious Airbnb for her and I to stay in. 85 year old woman singing and dancing because of the joy that she felt. I remembered a few words of what she sang, and wanted to play it for her when I have her relive that experience at my first house this week coming up. I can't wait to see her face!!

I know there are lots of versions of this and many great ones- but i think this version by Ted Lewis captures the nostalgia of the period for me- he sings it like a guy whose seen tough times during the depression- which is what this song is all about. The Rockefellers had the money but Ted knew where the real riches were- don't you think in the current debacle millions could use some uplifting tunes like this was then? all they get now is the shaft. So sad -Bill (on the sunny side)

Wow! Never heard this arrangment before. It gives a completely different take on the lyrics. I've heard the upbeat dance version a million times as it was part of my mom's song list when she played dances.

It's a shame ratings are disabled, as I wanted to give it a thumbs up. I recall visiting the Ted Lewis Museum in Circleville, Ohio, when I was working there about 25 years ago. It was operated by 90-year-old women at the time, who probably remembered him from their youth. I see the museum is still there, though.

I'm a Circleville resident. I came here because I was watching Cheers on Netflix and the beginning of one episode featured this song. I'd never heard it so I googled the lyrics, found the song, and this was the first recommended video. I say all that to say the museum is still here and still open to the public. Ted Lewis' legacy is still very much alive here in Round Town.

This gives me hope in a world that at times shows hopeless when I get really down I'm so glad that I'm not like my parents and was born during the Great Depression even though we are in a pandemic the Great Depression had to be worse. At least that's what people tell you that are still alive better going through this pandemic and also went to the depression.

Great version--I remembe this so well..watching a particular series of cartoon..where a collection of alley cats would sing this and other great tunes from the '20s and '30s... I do not know the name of the series (wish I did)--but they were absolutely fantastic. Many of them had the cats singing at early hours of the a.m. and harassing a porky pig type who trying to sleep.. The rivalry continued on w/ other cartoons and the mischievous cats contijually harassing him -WISH I COULD FIND THEM

I'm 22 as well, this genre of music is my absolute favorite, but I think it's sad if you don't know a Rockefeller reference, no matter your age. I think it's just plain ignorance. To me, it's like not knowing Carnegie, JP Morgan, or the Vanderbilts. They are not exactly just throw-away names, they were/are institutions. That aside, this is a LOVELY rendition of this song, though Peggy Lee's will always be my favorite. Thanks for this though! :)

This reached #2 on the hit parade in April-May 1930 for Ted Lewis (Columbia 2144). The song is from the Broadway musical "International Revue." Remember that the stock market had crashed only six months before, plunging nearly everyone into a deep, deep depression -- hence the appeal of the musical message here. Sad to think that today, the way so many folks in Washington are hellbent on spending, spending spending, ruining the economy, that this song may bome back as relevant any time now!

Recorded on February 28, 1930; Ted's vocal style often wrung all the pathos (and joy) out of a song's lyrics- to the point of sounding like "pure corn"- whenever possible...
