I have two Hamilton Khaki automatics already, a Field and an Action. There's plenty of their watches I'd not mind having, but aside the Khaki Navy Frogman H774450, I probably won't buy another Hamilton. However, I have this Baltany, their Trench Watch, and their A11 all on my 'to buy' list, and a fair number of others that I'm also considering. Their specs and finishing and price simply make it far more palatable and possible to build a collection with, than with Hamilton. I really like Hamilton, I appreciate their history, and they are solid watches. But they didn't invent the field watch language, and there's plenty of other companies that manufactured the same style watches (that established much of Hamilton's legacy language) for the same applications as Hamilton, and plenty of Hamilton contemporary watches that are near homages of other manufacturer's field and pilot watches. Like my Hamilton H70415133, a nearly dead-on clone of the IWC Spitfire. Or whatever, whoever, whenever. Hamilton hardly owns the design language, even if it IS a "direct" homage of a style that Hamilton also happens to... homage?
I like field watches and own a 38mm KFA. I'll definitely will be purchasing this Baltany. The case thickness is ok and likely similar to my Seiko srph27k1.
I like how the Baltany outdoes the Hamilton for like 1/10th the price. Amazing! Strange they go BGW9. I'd have thought the greenish C3 would be more appropriate for field watches, but I like the blue so whatever. I'm looking forward to getting the blue sunburst dial one in a few days. I also love the dark chocolate brown the black dial goes in bright light.
AliExpress watches will kill the lower end for Hamilton , Certina ,Tissot and Seiko. Similar Hamilton watches are now £700 and these newer companies like Baltany and San Martin often have better finish, better lume, and better AR . Granted the Eta movement Swatch group use are better but also they can’t be repaired or replaced so easily. I now see any watch under £500 as basically disposable when watch stops
Yeah, too thick for my taste! Also, one thing I wish they hadn't copied so accurately is the extra large crown. I wish Hamilton would reduce its size a little bit. They've done it considerably on the new titanium khaki 38mm and it looks much more balanced IMO. More AR, smaller crown, and better lume and I'd snap up the khaki 38mm tomorrow!
"Your move Hamilton..." The thing about being a legendary brand in some field (pun intended) or other, is that your name is enough to outdo competition from brands like Baltany, however good the watches are. Hamilton would probably reply to "Your move.." by saying "Ok, we've put Hamilton on the dial of our latest watch. Your move, nobodies"
I bought a Hamilton Murph a few months ago, and to be honest, I feel a bit ripped off at the $800 price. It's just a Khaki with a prettier dial and a significantly downgraded movement. There's little or no advantage to the new ETA movements in Hamiltons and Tissots; they're modified to be cheaper to produce, with plastic parts and no adjustability. They try to cover that up by talking about the 80 hour power reserve, but all they did was slow the movement down so it runs longer. The ETA "Powermatics" are just Swatch's answer to Seiko's using cheaper ($25) 4R movements in $600 watches. Baltany and San Martin are growing and expanding. When they start producing original designs, they will eat Seiko and Swatch's lunch.
Its seems Baltany San Martin and other chinese brands are where Japanese watch used to be.Affordable with good specs. Nowadays you can even get a decent movement japanese watch without sapphire crystal. Seiko pressage with crystal dial at $300 + Chinese Micro Bands are now insane value for money.
This is a Hamilton Khaki Automatic homage, not a "field watch" homage. The dial and hands are almost identical. I don't see why you danced around it so much.
It's because the formula for field watches is so broad. For me it's more about not implying that Hamilton solely invented or owns this common aesthetic.
Because Hamilton don't own that design,nor did they invent it,it's literally a generic field watch face....ergo it's not an "homage",it's literally just a field watch.
