On this day, 47 years ago, Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips talked about their engagement for the first time in the garden of Buckingham Palace, a day after it was officially announced.
They first met at a party for horse lovers in 1968, and both joined Britain’s Olympic equestrian team.
Captain Phillips proposed with a sapphire and diamond engagement ring, designed by Garrard Jewellers.
The royal couple got married that same year, on 14 November 1973, at Westminster Abbey in London. The ceremony was watched by 500 million television viewers around the world.
