Hope the historical society purchased the property to restore the area back to the civil war hospital. Being a Gettysburg resident, we don't need anymore winery stores and souvernier shops.

I hope this area is preserved. It’s sad that most of it is under a parking lot

Just think how many may have lived if penicillin had been available at that time!

under contract... why did i not hear from American Battlefield Trust on this? Camp Letterman would have been a good thing to preserve.

The open tents may have beeb for patients with pneumonia. It was common for all hospitals, even civilian ones, to have "pneumonia tents" set up when needed.

Noticed the marker for Camp Letterman when I was taking a walk when staying at Hilton Garden Inn a few years ago. I think it is horrible that such an important spot is not being preserved, even a small chunk of it. On one hand I'm glad Gettysburg seems to be a successful thriving town, on the other hand there is so much commercialism it is ridiculous. I visited the town/battlefield several times in the 70s and early 80s (usually as a reenactor) and while it had some silly attractions - Ft. "somethingorother" (don't recall the name), Fantasyland, Streets of 63, etc. etc. - I guess the Historical importance of the place isn't enough to attract people other than us History nuts if you don't have to have things for the kiddies and a bunch of shops/boutiques...but I guess that's just a continuation of the history of the commercialization of Gettysburg. I have the CC on for some reason and 7:49 - "..unsung heroes herman hop.." Should actually be Herman Haupt - an amazing human being. The panoramic view of Camp Letterman is amazing! Really needs to be reproduced and sold.

Thank you for mentioning the nurses and explaining why, with so much work to do, they only sang songs and wiped fevered brows. As a nurse, I know better. If they stayed, they worked hard, even if they didn't write about it.

Fascinating. This is what war really means to those who are unlucky enough to get wounded.
