Here's how to replace the fuel filter on an Onan Quiet Diesel RV generator. We show you how we change our RV Onan 7.5kW Quiet Diesel Generator's fuel filter, but the process is similar for many Onan RV Generators (especially the 8kW QD RV generator).
Our previous Onan RV generator maintenance videos covered annual and bi-annual servicing. You can watch them here:

Thank you for the excellent how to video! I'll add that the tools needed to do the job for this specific generator are: 1/2" socket, socket wrench, 7/16" wrench, 9/16" wrench, and 5/8" wrench.

Jerry M That's why we made this video, Jerry! We were dreading doing this project because of all that we'd heard about it being a mess. But actually doing it proved that it wasn't a big deal. We hope other people will feel more confident tackling this now that they can see for themselves that it's not very hard.

We are indeed lucky. We know how badly some manufacturers can bury the genny.

Thanks guys! I sure are lucky with how similar our RV's are. We have the same genset so this will make my servicing next week seem like I've already done it before.

We have indeed found that there is an advantage of our having such a popular genset. That Onan 7.5k is all over the place. Good luck with your maintenance, and happy to hear we could help a bit.

Haha, just saw my comment, I'll try to speak English next time! Yes this is a huge help and I watched all of your videos on the generator, great job and thanks for your hard work making them! Safe Travels

Love your videos. One suggestion might be for you to always mention the sizes of the various wrenches/sockets needed for the projects you're presenting. The video did show an 11/16" wrench for the fixed nut on the fuel filter, but how about the other wrench and the socket size? Knowing these in advance would help us DIYers lay out tools before starting the project. Thanks.
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 5 лет назад
Thanks for the tip, Robert. We've done that in a few videos, but will try to do that more often. One challenge is that different rigs use different size equipment, and a smaller generator or water heater, etc, might use different hardware. Point well taken though!

Your how to videos are great. I can only hope your next RV has an Onan 12.5k. Can’t seem to find much in the way of maintenance videos on them.

I have this exact generator on my motorhome, I'm actually looking to see how to replace the fuel pump I believe my fuel pump went out. Unfortunately my generator does not slide out I wonder if I can change it without dropping the generator. First I have to find out where my fuel pump is 😳 Wait a minute I have to edit this comment I believe I can see the fuel pump in this video right next to the fuel filter lol.
@RVgeeks

Sorry we're not sure if that's the fuel filter or not, but good luck, and be sure to let us know how you make out!

@@RVgeeks Hi I left the comment about 2 months ago I wanted to give you the update I found out that on the filter that metal tubing that has a slight Bend goes directly to the fuel pump. I'm going to change it out but unfortunately as I mentioned before mine is not a slide out and my support beams that holds my generator in place covers the two nuts that I have to get to to remove my fuel pump, thanks a lot Holiday Rambler 😠. I'm just going to shave the beam just a little to get to the nuts for the pump. But I wanted to ask you, I have the exact same generator as you is this the fuel filter you installed for your fuel filter generator? www.amazon.com/Cummins-Onan-149-2513-Fuel-Filter/dp/B003ZOLAH0/ref=asc_df_B003ZOLAH0/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312373636797&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14432779085493609858&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031442&hvtargid=pla-448854365230&psc=1 I took my filter out and I'm not getting the same numbers as the link above but that the only number that appear for my generator on Google search. All mine said is model 50 21631 on the fuel filter. Thanks

Helpfull The lines seem to be very tight. Any advice as to how to loosen them without too much torque? Also what are the wrench sizes?
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 3 года назад
Hi Scott. If I recall correctly, you’ll need an 11/16 and a 3/8 wrench on one fitting and a 7/16 and a 9/16 on the other fitting. As far as amount of torque needed you need to apply as much pressure as required to break the nuts loose.

Nice video. However, one thing he doesn't mention. Is that the diesel never stops running. The solid line did not drip. The flexible line dripped a full gallon before I managed to get the new fuel filter onto the fittings. Drenched in diesel.... Question: which line comes directly from the tank and which goes to the fuel pump? My dripping was from the flexible line. If that one goes to the tank, is there any way to shut it off?
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 4 года назад
Hi Sailor! Ours doesn’t leak like that.... just a minor dribble and then it stops.... so ours must be a bit different than yours. Sorry you had a problem.
@sailork3506
@sailork3506 4 года назад
@@RVgeeks No problem. I like diesel baths. I can't think why it would happen. If the flexible line goes to the fuel rail, as I suspect, it may be a siphon effect. My fuel tank is totally full right now and the return line may be below the level of diesel in tank. A little farfetched, but that's all I can think of.

I have the same generator I changed fuel pump and fuel filter and for some reason the fuel filter keeps leaking I put the o rings in and wrapped the threads with Teflon tape but it still has drops of gas I believe it is from the center where you screw on the bolt that holds on the filter to the bracket? Could it be it's just a cheap fuel filter possibly it looks just like yours I bought it off Amazon. I've even bought another fuel filter and put it on and still the same thing I made sure not to strip anything and I feel that I've done it perfect but for some reason I still get drips of gas leaking

Hi Marie. So sorry to hear you’re having trouble. You’ve already done exactly what we would have tried, which is to get a second fuel filter to see if the first one was defective. We’re not sure what else to recommend. Sorry we can’t be of more help.

@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 6 лет назад
Hi Savannah. We haven't actually heard of such a light. Is it possible that you're referring to a "water in fuel" warning light? We did some Googling, but can't find the answer to this one. We'd suggest either calling a Winnebago service department and asking a tech there, or asking your question on the iRV2 Winnebago owners forum: www.irv2.com/forums/f101/ Sorry we're not more help on this one.

RVgeeks Thank you for trying! The most likely suggestions have been: it can be cleared with an OBD scanner with a win/rv adapter, and the other was that it could he a sensor that triggers the message and may still need to be cleaned or have air in the lines. I am actually asking for a friend who is technologically challenged. I have no clue about RVS. I am just trying to help him with the internet. 😀 Thanks for the informative videos.

@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 4 года назад
Oh wow, R.S!! That doesn't sound good! We've never encountered that specific issue, but some quick Googling makes us think that the float needle in your carb may be stuck (which allows the fuel to overflow out through the air filter)... either on its own, or because some dirty fuel clogged it. Try searching on your Generator Model # and "clogged float needle"... should lead you in the right direction.
