Some stories are told in just *6 minutes and 57 seconds*. This one is an example. Watch the amazing record lap of the new 918 Spyder in *full length*. More information on www.porsche.com/918 *Fuel consumption (combined according to EU5): 3.3-3.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions (combined) 79-70 g/km. Electricity consumption 13.0-12.5 kWh/100 km
Digital Car Addict I was thinking the same thing while watching this video. Also it looks to be mounted so the mounting hardware probably adds another .001 lolol It's either that or the driver doesn't have breakfast and/or lunch before the run lol sacrifices had to be made so after the runs the driver probably had a sandwich in hand.
I don't mean to argue, but calling the TheFerrari & P1 'more powerful' than the 918 is debatable. The McLaren P1 is has a marginal 16 hp advantage over the Porsche, but gives up an enormous 276 lb/ft of torque. The TheFerrari generates 76 more hp over the Porsche (an 8% advantage), but also falls behind by 276 lb/ft of torque. People are impressed by the horsepower, but forget that engines also produce torque. Porsche has a huge torque advantage.
do you know the feeling when a racing in a video game feels unrealistic because it seems to be to fast? watching this just gave me the same feeling. wow
seriously this guy has balls, the car is quite heavy, and to be moving at that speed in such a substantial hunk of machine is quite terrifying I imagine.
Tremendous feat of engineering. The 918 is fully loaded with luxuries yet can still break speed records. I feel this cars like this and the Veyron are greater achievements than something like the P1 which is very stripped down and focused on track performance.
@Porsche Very nice!!! it did beat the LP 750-4's record By the way, the driver pushes the 918 very hard, I admire him very much, I want him to teach me driving 'v' Nice job Porsche
I'm assuming it's the driver: who is he? Cause is it just me or did scumbag Porsche not mention his name anywhere in this? Edit: I just saw helmet, but still
Dumb question. From 7:25-7:50 the speedometer doesn't go over 280km/hr. We all know the 918 can go way faster. So how come on such a long straight, Lieb didn't push it?
ROFLcopter when I went around the ring for the first time I can remember being absolutely blown away at how much more bumpy the track seems as opposed to a video game, so with it being a pretty low car, it catching the bumps along Antoniusbuche etc restricts it from accelerating even faster, the fastest cars around the ring tent to be either higher up or incredibly light to cure that problem, or have softer tyres.
ROFLcopter Had it not run out of "boost" by that section? You can see him change something on the steering wheel. I'm thinking he may have used up all the battery boost by that section? It did seem to get up to that speed in other sections much more quickly.
By any stretch of the imagination that was HUGELY impressive. Oceans of power and grip - and the handling looked sublime - and yes, hats-off to the driver too. Balls of steel....!!!!
This car is just sick. I don't think La Ferrari or the P1 can touch it, maybe just maybe the Pagani will give it go but honestly I think the 918 is in a class by itself.
This is the smoothest driver/car on this crazy circuit. There is almost no tire chirp/spin/slide. He is making it look so easy - compare that to the LFA. Add a top time and this is raised to "art".
3700lbs with insane power and torque, able to maintain control and stability on the most messed up track is unreal. Meanwhile the rivals are laying low after declaring super fast fake lap times.
+smsuperman nissan GTR is 150lbs more of weight, 300 horsepower less and 800 000$ less expensive yet the difference between these two is only 11 seconds in the nurburgring.
The Nordschleife is a 21km Porsche-Laboratory and the 918 finished countless laps during the past years of development. On this track an experienced package can be much faster than a more powerfull car ! Now Ferrari is in a rush to test over there, but from now on the weather is also getting more and more unsteady, and this is another significant factor on the Nordschleife. Ferrari is only unbeatable at Fiorano, but Fiorano lap times wont make people excited ...
2 years later, a non-racing pedigree, not as advanced brand like Lamborghini brings out a heavier, not as advanced, half the price and only one engined car to the Nurburgring and manages to be within 2 seconds of the 918. Don't get me wrong, the 918's lap time is impressive, but the Aventador SV's time was more impressive IMHO (In My Honest Opinion).
Unglaublich!
Hide yo wife, hide yo kids, 'cause war is brewing up in the Nurburgring! Three nations battle it out for the fastest lap on the green hell; Britain, Italy, and of course, Germany! O: It's definitely going to be exciting!
Not just you. S2000 revs to 9K and I think the 918 revs slightly higher than that. 918's V8 has a flat plane crankshaft (like all ferraris) which effectively means you have 2 4 cylinder engines sitting side by side. Like an S2000 times 2. Thus the similar sound.
I don't think the 918 was pushed to its limits. This car redlines at 9000rpm. Didn't sound like it was redlining that high. If I'm right, that's scary. Great car. I love seeing new records being set.
Freman Paez I know this is super late, but apparently the designer purposely cut around 17-20 percent of the engine's power in the event that a rival beat the time. You can confirm by the straightaway at the end. 918 does not top out at 280 KMH. Plus, the engineers told the driver not to push the car too hard in the corners. Not a 6:57 run more like a 6:52 run.
Thank god I'm not the only one who thinks he could have pushed more! To be honest, I think he could have dropped like 6/8 sec... For me the driver wasn't "consistent", as he doesn't top out the 280Kmh you are talking about at the end but take a look at 2:14! He gets to 300Kmh and there is a lot harder to hit the 300 (few production cars hit 300 there)... There are also some turns he could have pushed more with the AWD system and that monstrous grip... I honestly don't understand if it's either the car's, driver's or engineer's fault. Nonetheless, it's a great car and a nice driver.
it would be superb to watch the race between different Porsches, like it was done by Mercedes: F1 - CLK DTM - SL55 AMG - C-Class for example, 919 Hybrid against 918, 911 Turbo S, Boxster! it would collect millions of views! thumbs up!
Merry Christmas (to those who celebrate it) Woke up this morning and thought, I should stop drinking coffee. Turned on the laptop, went to RU-vid and decided to watch this video. I have now thrown away all my coffee.
Well, tell those manufacturers to go back in time and get the foresight that Porsche had to develop a hybrid power plant and design a car to take advantage of it.
i mean everyone always did look at electric motors and cars. Even american companies started it earlier back in early 2000s (and probably even earlier had the idea and rough developments) than most, but ended up scraping it due to dropping gas prices etc at the moment and then they terribly regreted it a few years later.
Probably not the fastest of the 3 hybrid super cars but it's perhaps going to be the most reliable of the 3. Those Germans now how to over engineer cars and i mean that in a good way.
Brilliant video, car and driving, but a little weird watching it now having also seen the Lambo Aventador SV come very close to this performance...surely this is a golden age for super/hyper/mega cars...? And now the One:1 is just beginning to show what it can do, though it will be interesting to see if and by how much it can break this record...
i think the LaFerrari faster but im sure the P1 is faster much lighter than the porsche. Anyway still unbeliveable what the 918 done. 887 bhp with 1600 kg without driver against Zonda R wich has 750 bhp and weight is 1070 kg more than half ton different and the 918 is street legal.
still way off from where the 956 and 962 rothmans cars were. Derek Bell could lap in 6:36, and Jacky Ickx did it in about 6:25. video here oh youtube in car with Derek Bell Icks fly's by Bell as he is on his qualifying lap where Bell is not.
Well Lamborghini beat this record with Huracan Performante 06.52... We are waiting for your answer dear Porsche. Where is the 991 GT2 RS, or 918 with a higher power??
OMG!!! just for fun and verification I noted down the actual time of this video lap (starting and finishing the clock when the 918 crosses the white line as done in the Zonda R's video lap) and I was amased that it clocked 7-02 insted of 6-57...moreover, I compared it with the 599XX's video lap (6-58) and the Porsche was still slower...but then I got the cause - Porsche used a shorter course: 20600 m istead of 20832 m...smart move to get a 918 under 7 minutes
1 sec faster than the track only Ferrari 599 FXX! Oh boy, that's fast.... Road cars have become insanely fast, but still a pure racing car is another beast... The 12C GT3 did the Nurburgring in 6:28 for the old circuit. 30 sec faster! A DTM did this in 6:02 for qualifying... here's a guy causally chatting with a passenger as he does a 6:14 -- roadandtrack.com/motorsports/videos/a31269/watch-this-bmw-dtm-car-set-an-insanely-fast-nurburgring-lap-time/
I saw that too. he hit a switch off and back on seemingly. I doubt he'd run out as the gas engine charges the e boost. maybe he was adjusting the amount of boost for the straight away turning it up to use all of it he could. But the engine definitely sounded less lively that I expected on the straight. I think you may be right
Next time do it the other way round. All the good battery flesh wasted in the early cornery bits due to the need of braking that often and in the end you should have kept some battery capacity for the long straits, where the heavy investment in the electric engines and batteries could have paid off better.
My favorite cars (by country): Germany: Porsche 918 Italy: Lamborghini Aventador Japan: Nissan GTR I was baffled when I found out how close together their lap times were.
Even now 918 not the fastest car at nurburgring ,but it is still the best hyper ever, because it 30~33 km/l ,and under 7 minutes finished nurburgring ,it is incredible ,even p1, laferarri, one 1 ,zonda r ,huracan,911 gt2 rs ....can't do this,so in my eyes,918 is the real perfect hyper in this generation
amazing car. truly. i don't usually like Porsches, and that was the case with this too at first sight, but looking long enough, it's a beauty. you just have to understand. the performance is amazing. and it's not as barefeet as the P1, although that is a brilliant race machine. Porsche found balance. P1 is pure performance.
I eould love to see you put the time on the screen while he was doing it so we can see the time while he is doing the lap like lambo didsome people say they dont believe the lambo time but they believe time but yet lambo showed the time while the lap was being done and there is no time being shown while he is doing it in this video I would def say the lambo time was legit and I believe porsche also just saying there were alot of na sayers out there about the lambo and yet they actually showed the time when porsche did not makes no sense
So much more sophisticated and refined than the P1. I am sure any lay-driver could easily do a faster time in this than P1 although any lay driver would probably be in the armco in the P1 too. Would buy in standard spec tomorrow if funds permitted. The best car currently available...
I'm watching this video and thinking, how a guy did a lap in 6:11 in this awesome track 33 years ago? Because this video is fucking fast but imagine 6:11... holy crap !!!
Seems to have quite a bit of understeer. Very fast lap, but could have improved in a few places. The 918 seems to have quite a low ratio steering rack - I am surprised!
