At approximately 0:55 is where Gilles Villeneuve crested the hill and saw Jochen Mass going much slower in front of him. Jochen Mass saw him closing fast in his mirrors and moved over to the right to allow Gilles to pass him on the racing line, but Gilles had already committed to the right and at approximately 0:58 on the time counter he touched wheels with Mass. He ended-up roughly at the end of where the red-and-white striped padding is today on the left before the chicane was subsequently installed, and it was a standard double-right-handed turn with only a catch fence on the outside.
The double right hander as it was, was taken in one continues line (apex inner-outer) and then to the left hand kink . It could have done with a bit more run off on the outside. It was my favorite part of the track. Loved to do it on my TZ750.
