I wanna meet all the people in this comment section! Its good to know that there are people in the world who can deeply appreciate how awesome, amazing and sentimental this is!
When I first watched this movie, I remember this scene got me to actually pay attention. We were in class and I really just wanted to sleep so I was resting my head and then this scene came on and I looked up and just felt all the emotions one could possibly feel. I watched the rest of the movie in awe, but this particular scene just blew me away. I wish there could be more artists in the world that could produce an ounce of this guys emotions on their songs. That would be splendid.
@@gerollopy do you have video references I know he kills it everytime but for me the emotion here has been the best that Ihave seen, maybe I'm missing his best preformance.
Her clapping after he finished the song REALLY made me appreciate the talented buskers 2:36 . I almost always give them a penny and try to have a little chat to know their story. I still remember running to ATM to get some cash for a little girl, who played violin in Vienna.
I've figured it out. It's official! This is my favorite movie. THE favorite movie. The one I could watch over and over again and never get bored. Even the title is perfect: they were just people, from everyday walks of life, who came together and celebrated what they could make together, singing in beautiful harmony. Dear lord I loved this movie!!
The shot composition for this scene is just such beautiful imagery. The camera starts far back, fading in from black on just another street performer nestled between two mid-scale clothing shops and playing literally next to two dumpsters, backlit by a dingy alleyway. We start pulled back from the performance, but just as the music begins to swell, it slowly draws us in. Then we begin to see the true nature of the performer, the man. His guitar, worn clear thru on the body from the harshness of his strumming, his clothes, humble and practical, his breath steaming from the cold and the ferocity of the lyrics that escape him. As he plays, it feels like he could burst into tears at any moment, truly harnessing his pain for his art. And then the beautiful pull back at the end, showing us he has a single listener who pulls us and him back into reality. Phenomenal.
His voice, while not technical perfect, is full of raw emotion and power. I only wish him and Marketa happiness, I was genuinely saddened when they split romantically--I only hope they keep making amazing music.
I remember working at a theater and a worker told me he'd go to every showing of Once just to stand in the back to see this opening every time because of how good it is. I understand
Fun fact, they filmed this scene in Dublin city centre on Grafton Street, one of Dublins most popular shopping and tourist areas.Which is the same street U2 were discovered on. They filmed at 3am because Glen was a then sort of famous musician with the band The Frames and they didn't want a crowd gathering to watch
Was skipping through the channels one night, Heard this guys voice at this scene, And just because of this one scene, I watched the whole film, What a song!!!
This is my favorite song off the soundtrack and the one that pulled me into the movie. Before this song I was just letting the movie play in the background while cooking and thought it was just some weird foreign comedy movie cause of that first scene. Then I overheard this song and thought "man that sounded pretty good, let me see what this is about". It turned out to be one of the best movies I'd ever seen.
+3ternal I was the same except I was in a cinema after the film I wanted to see was sold out. A VERY nice surprise. Basically we had the same reaction as the sound engineer had later on.
Everyone's talking about the artist (who is amazing) but I think this scene would have been much less impactful had the director decided to do multiple shots for the song part. During the long take when the camera moves forward with that shaky, uncontrolled motion, it adds a whole new layer of texture to the scene. Such a well executed scene
Well, i met and spoke to Glen for like 2 hours not long ago, and i asked him lots of things, including stuff about the movie... I can tell you what he told me. He said he had to do like 13 takes to this particular scene, and in the last few his voice was already crashing (?? dont know the correct term).. sooo yeah.. fun fact for you :) Btw this is my favourite movie ever, i tottaly fell in love with him and his work as soon as i saw/heard it :)
I remember listening to this song and crying my eyes out nearly a decade ago when I lost my woman. The most beautiful woman I ever had the opportunity to love... RIP my love... You will always be my first love...
I′m scratching at the surface now And I′m trying hard to work it out So much has gone misunderstood This mystery only leads to doubt And I didn′t understand When you reached out to take my hand And if you have something to say You′d better say it now ** Cause this is what you′ve waited for Your Chance to even up the score And as these shadows fall on me now I will somehow Cause i′m picking up a message Lord And i′m closer than I′ve ever been before So if you have something to say Say it to me now Say it to me now Say it to me now
@@peterthirdandthebridges "I will somehow" is supposed to be "I'll win somehow" and "And i′m closer than I′ve ever been before" should be "That I'm closer than I′ve ever been before".
even to this day.... you can tell from the raw emotions in his voice that he's pissed off... angry... brokenhearted...that's what this song is entirely about... his relationship with his girlfriend starting to crack and fall apart.....fantastic film.... that's my hometown of dublin ireland... he's playing near the top of grafton street.
Wow. RU-vid has reminded me that I’ve commented on this clip multiple times throughout the years…. Well I’ll comment again: I just recently rewatched the movie & goddamn, what an opening scene. The raw emotion from him then juxtaposed with her lightly clapping & smiling at him was such a great way to introduce these characters. Plus the song itself is such a beautiful blend of tenderness & anger; hope & frustration.
When I first heard about this film, people had said it was pretty great. When I sat down to watch and this song began, and the credits started and this song progressed, well...my jaw just dropped, wide open. The way Hansard sings and the emotion he puts into it is absolutely mind blowing. I consider this one of the greatest opening scenes of any film I have ever seen. And then, it only gets better.
I have been a busker for 5 years now, full time, in MI. It's funny. What it's going well, there's no better feeling in the world. When it's not..... you feel like you must suck. You can't really predict which days will be good either. All you can do is grind it out every day and hope people dig what you do. If you are a musician though, you need to try it.
They are, aren't they. It's amazing how many superb musicians the tiny island of Ireland gave us - G. Hansard, U2, the Kelly Family and so many others.
After getting rejected by the only woman I loved I saw this movies and this song stuck in my mind I felt a great need to hear it again after a while and when listened to it again I start crying like crazy, this never happened to me before I think this song moved something deep inside me, all my respect to you Glen.
Each time i come back here and look at it, i smile like a dumb and cry in the same time... Glen thank you for everything... A big fun of yours since my childhood and forever...
In college students would book out the lecture theatre and play movies. The movie they wanted to watch wasn't working, so someone just put this one on. I love the film, but it feels like the rest of the film doesn't have a moment like this one again. But i couldn't look away the entire time. Half the people that showed up left because, i guess it was either Pulp Fiction or nothing, but they missed out.
Wow... August 2020 and this song still feels as emotional as it did on the first watch of this movie. I traveled to Ireland in September 2018 specifically to see Glen and the band under the big top in Ballintubbert. What a magical two nights that was!
Isn't it interesting, how a song that is only 2 mins long can be so beloved. I have loved this movie for a long time... Funny thing is I don't think the message hit me until quite recently. This movie is unique. Well worth the watch. 🌹
Say It To Me Now by Glen Hansard. Once(2006) I'm scratching at the surface now 이제 조금 알 것 같아 And I'm trying hard to work it out 이해하는데/ 오랜 시간이 걸렸어 So much has gone misunderstood 수많은 오해가 겹겹이 쌓이고 This mystery only leads to doubt 풀리지 않는 수수께끼는 아픔만 남겼지 And I didn't understand 난 이해하지 못했어 When you reached out to take my hand 네가 왜 내 손을 잡으려 했는지 And if you have something to say 내게 할 말이 있다면 You'd better say it now 지금 말해줘 Cause this is what you've waited for 지금이 바로 네가 기다려온 순간 Your chance to even up the score 지금이 바로 네가 솔직해질 시간 And as these shadows fall on me now 이 어둠이 날 휘감으면 너의 기회는 사라질 거야 I will somehow Cause I'm picking up a message Lord 난 어떤 계시라도 받은 듯 And I'm closer than I've ever been before 그 어느 때보다 너를 가까이 느껴 Cause this is what you've waited for 지금이 바로 네가 기다려온 순간 Your chance to even up the score 지금이 바로 네가 솔직해질 시간 And as these shadows fall on me now 이 어둠이 날 휘감으면 너의 기회는 사라질 거야 I will somehow So if you have something to say 그러니 할 말이 있다면 Say it to me now 바로 지금 말해줘 Say it to me now 바로 지금 말해줘 Say it to me now 바로 지금 말해줘
This takes me back to a very specific place in my life. Call it the "honeymoon phase" of heroin addiction. Where there was no pain. Only wave after wave of blissful euphoria. And in that one chord, you all know the one, I can for a split second, everything I felt. October 2013, after the sun went down over the colored leaves leaving the streets bleached with that golden light from the streetlights. A crisp breeze in through the cracked window bringing with it the scents of memories long passed. Sitting with my girlfriend on her bed watching this after we just used. The way she would just look at me was a high in and of itself. Both of us oblivious to the horror that was right around the corner waiting to drive us permanently apart.
Funnily enough, I knew the stage adaptation before the actual movie because of Cristin Milioti, as far as adding "Falling Slowly" in my Spotify playlist because frankly, it is just a great song. Only recently did I finally have the mood to watch the movie. I wouldn't be ashamed to say that as a huge guy with a rock as a heart, I have never cried so much for a movie. But it is not a cry of sadness. It's hopeful, sorrow, happy,.. Truly a beautiful, honest movie.
It is absolutely so raw. I am beyond enamored with this song. Absolutely such a well done movie. The music is everything. Thank you so much for creating it. It means so much more to me than you'll ever truly know.
This movie so impacted every emotion I have! I saw its once and was hooked on the soundtrack. The music is just so incredibly emotional. I lost a pet and these songs caused waves of tears,
I recorded him once. Just a single boom mic, and as here I came in closer as the camera moved in closer. He has a very powerful voice, and it is likely that they recorded it very simply at a quiet time to day.
