I thought this Malawi Eyebiter (Dimidiochromis compressiceps) would be that one rare exception that would change and become mellow after being a relentless jerk fish. I was wrong! Goodbye to this beautiful jerk fish!

I told myself id bet money that the eyebiter would revert back to bullying when you re-introduced him back into the 300g tank... good call getting him out for rehoming... I really enjoy my Redhead Geo's, you should too... cheers

The jerks always seem to be very beautiful, never just dull and a fish that you are not that bothered about losing.

This situation is why I got out of peacocks and haps. I had a big 10” moorii tank boss for a year and a half, and after he passed it was game on. Removed an eyebiter, taking half the tank, then it was a Livingstonii, then it was a VC10, and so on.. never ending. No matter who I removed or how long I waited. After 2 years of hoping for the hierarchy to resettle with a “nice” tank boss, I gave up.

I have an Electric Blue Ahli that started torpedo attacking some of the other fish in the tank. I ended up putting him in stir (a 10 gal tank) for three or four weeks, and he chilled out when I reintroduced him back into the tank with the other guys. It looks like I lucked out with him.

Anecdote from my personal experience: I have an OB which is absolutely stunning popping colors BUT a jerk fish, probably killed 3 of my fish (when I only had about 12 fish in my 125g tank, early start up), I finally isolated him in a 10 gallon for about 7 months. In the meantime, I built my fish stock and got to about 40 Africans mostly malawis in the large display tank which established a rigid hierarchy, and about half of them larger than the OB, I then reintroduced only him in the large tank so adding 1 fish to a fully hierarchized tank of 40 African cichlids and he had a hard time in the first week, they let him know he wasn't gonna push his nasty business in here. Then a week later he's settled in and not causing any problems (it's been months now), I still think he's a jerk fish but he just knows he can't lay out the law against the whole crew half of which are bigger than him. I'm pretty convinced that if I had introduced him again in a tank that isn't overstocked with say only 15 fish and smaller or same size he would have gone on a killing spree again. So I think he's still a "jerk fish" in nature but he is coexisting because he weighs the cons of trying to act up and knows he'll be defeated. But hey maybe his nature changed, but I doubt it. Either way, that's my experience with keeping a stunning jerk fish!

You just highlighted the reason I DO NOT have aggressive fish like this. The other fish always suffer. Not fair for your captive creatures

You have a point. I'm a hypocrite though as I have a tank filled with Mbuna.

Ben, You did the right thing if a fish can’t play nice and wants to corral everyone to one side and be mean they have to go. I had a red devil female do that after she laid eggs every three weeks or so. She became really mean and she would beat anyone up. My green severum took a beating from her. I turned her into my local fish store because of her aggressive nature.

May be you should brand it as Ben Ochart's Eye Biter to sell it off at a higher price. Happy to watch it in a 4K. Continue making videos in 4K Ben :)

Hi Ben i commented earlier you can see it when i was commenting the Spilorinchius had all my fish at one end i must say he was not injuring them but going in fast torpedo like he did this for about an hour or so now im watching them they are all swimming around together relaxed like they are best friends im not bothered because he's letting the tank mates I'm large and in charge i used to do what you did and re home them i don't do it anymore because another one will eventually take over and do the same thing

I have got a Chamsorchomis Spilorinchis that does the exact same thing I just leave it in there after a short time like 30 minutes or so it all goes back to normal after keeping these fish for over 25 years it's part of the deal as long as they are not injuring or killing I leave them in as what I've found they are all jerks given the chance I sit back relax and watch the show

It’s a shame that a beautiful African cichlid turns into a jerk fish. That’s all part of the hobby, never mind there’s also a lot of good ones also.
