I know the verses aren't in time, I don't know what happened. I actually prefer this version to the original because, well, russian is a beautiful language and I think it fits better with the movie because it's about the Romanov family.
A beautiful language... Its a shame when I hear it I get angry and sad at the same time... Hello from Hungary, the country which been torn apart by fascists and communists... :(

actually anastasia was assassinated along with her family in 1918 in Yekaterinburg, Russiaby members of the Cheka, the Bolshevik secret police. So in reality the movie isnt at all real historically,on the night of the deaths the family was awakened and told to dress. They were told they were being moved to a new location to ensure their safety in anticipation of the violence that might ensue when the White Army reached Yekaterinburg. Once dressed, the family and the small circle of servants who had remained with them were herded into a small room in the house's sub-basement and told to wait. Alexandra and Alexei sat in chairs provided by guards at the Empress's request. After several minutes, the guards entered the room, led by Yurovsky. Yurovsky quickly informed the Tsar and his family that they were to be executed. The Tsar had time to say only "What?" and turn to his family before he was killed by several bullets to the chest (not, as is commonly stated, to the head; his skull, recovered in 1991, bears no bullet wounds). The Tsaritsa and her daughter Olga tried to make the sign of the cross, but were killed in the initial volley of bullets fired by the executioners. The rest of the Imperial retinue were shot in short order, with the exception of Anna Demidova, Alexandra's maid. Demidova survived the initial onslaught, but was quickly murdered against the back wall of the basement, stabbed to death while trying to defend herself with a small pillow she had carried into the sub-basement that was filled with precious gems and jewels.once the thick smoke that had filled the room from so many weapons being fired in such close proximity cleared, it was discovered that the executioners' bullets had ricocheted off the corsets of two or three of the Grand Duchesses. The executioners later came to find out that this was because the family's crown jewels and diamonds had been sewn inside the linings of the corsets to hide them from their captors. The corsets thus served as a form of "armor" against the bullets. Anastasia and Maria were said to have crouched up against a wall, covering their heads in terror, until they were shot down by bullets,However, another guard, Peter Ermakov, told his wife that Anastasia had been finished off with bayonets. As the bodies were carried out, one or more of the girls cried out, and were clubbed on the back of the head.
Also it should be in other languages so people who don't know or understand Russian, like a lot of the world's population, can listen to it and learn it and sing it with it being in a language they understand.
Except you know...the real Anastasia (along with the rest of her family) died in 1918 shortly after the Russian Revolution of 1917.......and this movie was made in the late 1990s.....
+lilly xiong Anastasia died in 1917 she was murdered but before she died she saw her WHOLE family father, mother, baby brother, sisters killed by the gun like a bunch of cattle then she was shot what a tragic story truly sad :( 😭😭😭
As a bulgarian speaking english, it's impressive that they nailed the melody and harmony. It does sound russian like it was composed in Russia. Somebody did their homework.
If I had the time to learn all the languages I want to learn....... And fluently. Not just learning them to only be able to understand through listening and reading.
hey you know what's fucked up.. at school learning this stuff, we don't really care. we do by asking questions and saying "aw man that's fucked" then move on. but here...we love and care about it. it's so gut wrenching to us knowing what happened and how the family died
its really is gut wrenching to know how they died and me being Russian and wanting to know more about Russian history, decided to read the book i started to cry just a lil bit in alot of the story because there is so many sad parts of it
Gamer Reactor It is really sad. I remember watching the movie on them and I cried a bit because my great grandparents are Romanuiks and they had to escape that massacre.
No disrespect but yea right. The family was all killed. And I guess the only ones that were family were close friends. But your not related but blood are you
I don't care if this movie isn't 100% factual (quite a few things about it aren't, but I will not get into that) It makes you see the Romanovs in another light, and it worked.
@Ganime Ozcay Aye, it's a really good film. It's a legend, a myth. Like folk tales from olden time, it doesn't have to be historically accurate. But know as an adult when I saw this movie again in netflix all I could think of how Anastasia, had she lived, would have been used as a puppet by the white army, provoking yet another civil war where thousands more would probably die from. Now that I think about it, who knows where the myth of Anastasia surviving really originates from? The commoners talking about what could have been? Or a propaganda attempt by the royalists. Since if people believe Anastasia live, that's all the justification they'd want. A look alike can be found from anywhere, afterall.
I speak russian and I sang the whole song in front of my mom and at first she didn't know what song it was until the chorus. her reaction was hilarious.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who can't help but breaking into tears everytime I hear this song. I've seen the movie and heard the song for the first time today and I felt a big emptiness in my chest. Damn
Me too! It gets me every time no matter how many years has passed since the first time watching this film. The fact that this song has some historical background makes it even sadder. Not some fairy tale characters but the real people who had had to go through this. Though Anastasia never survived
I actulally know this version better over the english one. I have Russian family and my babushka used to sing this to my brother when we stayed with her.
@@AzizSTL um just cuz the woman is older doesn’t mean she didn’t watch the movie, especially if the plot centers around Russia. It’s very rare for us slavs to be shown in a good light, so we’re opsessed when the west interprets our culture. Well, at least that’s how I feel

Do you understand russian? I always try to find transliteration to songs i like in russian one of the mistakes i often find is "a" pronouced "o" can you explain why if you understand russian?
I love this version better than the English. Does anyone have a link to the Russian version of the Anastasia (20th Century Fox) movie)? If so, I will be so grateful.
Hope the Anthro Unicorn I know it makes me sad that they bring up anime, this song actually has a very deep meaning (i am so sorry if I don't make any sense my English is awful)
@@melanievoppichler6038 Hetalia....does not have to do with it m8.....even though Russia is in the anime it doesn't cover this is the show or manga I believe....
This version is so much deeper than the american one, though i like how Liz sang it better!Btw im from Serbia and I culd understand quite a bit of the text in Russian...
Wow, first time hearing this in russian, and I absolutely agree, in russian it is even better. They should have taken this version of the song for the movie.
hearing this beautiful song Once upon a December in Russian is absolutely beautiful, it is so interesting to hear it in the language it originates from as we all know Anastasia was Russian and the Romanov family, I feel this is a wonderful tribute to all of them, when you hear a song sung in the same language the movie originates from it has a completely different meaning. This is a wonderful version. thank you for sharing.

Enough with the Yuri!!! On Ice! This is about the horrible tragic deaths that broke Russia. This isn't a song for yaoi fan girls to twist and disturb to fit their twisted little fantasies! This is a song of Russia! A song filled with pain and guilt! A song that haunts the soul with its enchanting melody, and opens ones heart to the devastation of this time in the history of Mother Russia. No more dishonoring this song with your fantasies! This song is a tragic wish from a broken heart. It is *NOT* for people to disrespect and destroy. Using this song for yaoi or any other anime, fandom, otp, or ship related thing is *NOT* acceptable! This is a song reflecting the pain and agony of a country that murdered its own royalty, a family, a mother, a father, and their children. Enough with the inconceivable disrespect. This is Russia's song, it does not belong to you.
+Otaku Hime well I'm sorry since I came here from an anime fanfic. I never meant to disrespect anyone or anything. But I have to say it is a beautiful song, yet sad, but still so so beautiful.
ok. you need to calm down my good friend. It's not to be disrespectful that they say what they do. However a few of the characters from the anime are Russian and they simply think that it would be amazing and beautiful (as all the other skating programs in the anime are) if he skated to this song in competition in the anime. It's not twisting anything. yes its a sad song expressing an even sadder reality but it would make sense to use it if the theme for their programs were tragedy or something along that line. I am sure they mean no disrespect in saying what they did there is no reason to get upset and go on a rant over something as simple as wanting to see how this song would would be expressed on the ice... and might i add i have spent quite a bit of time going through the comments and i hardly ever found anything about yuri on ice. most of it was about how this version is better than the English

Honestly I feel like it would be a so much better experience if I understood Russian. I have a pretty good understanding of 5 languages, and translations almost always suck. This one is good though, so I can only imagine what it would be like in Russian. Though I'll probably never experience that. Russian is too difficult 😂😂
@@katongoukakyuunojutsu2164 yeah maybe true but I am struggling with my mediocre at best French, Korean and Chinese. If I ever manage to learn all of those till C1/2 level, Japanese and Russian are next on my list :D But honestly, Russian pronunciation is next level. And a Russian friend always tells me Russian is the most difficult language in the world and that he has never met a foreigner who could speak Russian very well haha
