Trailer for the Extended Director's Cut Restoration of Mafia Gangster Epic "Once Upon A Time In America" provided by Warner Home Video.
Sergio Leone’s original vision comes to life in this fully restored Extended Director’s Cut. Twenty-two minutes of never-before-seen footage have been returned to this chronicle of brutal and passionate underworld history, deepening the characters and enlarging the work of its astonishing cast. Robert De Niro and James Woods play lifelong pals whose rise as crime kingpins unravels in death and corruption. Tuesday Weld, Joe Pesci, Jennifer Connelly, Elizabeth McGovern, Treat Williams and Louise Fletcher (the latter three showcased in recovered scenes) also star. The newly added 22 minutes of extended scenes bring us closer to Leone’s original vision of the film, but due to the limited availability of 35mm work prints, the new inserts could not be restored to the same quality as the rest of the film.

Due to some confusion in the comment section, I would like to clarify the many different versions of Once Upon a Time in America which have been released over the years: 1. The infamous 139 min. American theatrical cut. It fortunately does not seem to be in circulation anymore besides some rare to find VHS copies. 2. The 229 min. European theatrical cut. This is the most widely available cut today and is the main version you receive when you rent on Prime, Vudu, or watch on Netflix. 3. The 251 min. Extended Director's Cut which was restored in 2012 and is available in 4K. The trailer above is for this version. 4. The 269 min. Cannes "original" cut. It received a standing ovation in 1984. Since then, 19 minutes of footage have dissapeared due to copyright issues, and this cut is no longer available. 5. Sergio Leone's original 6 hour cut that he wanted to release as two separate movies. Never publicly screened, and most likely long gone, never to be screened again.

For example, theres a guy who owns a rare copy of an English dub of Federico Fellini's 8 1/2 right here on RU-vid who could make it available to the public right now if he wanted to but he's just sitting on it (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GcdyCMOoRsM.html). I've seen repeatedly people discussing this movie invoke the idea that Sergio Leone is a director who is misogynistic and treats his femal characters poorly. I think it is because of this reason that Sergio Leone hasn't gotten the recognition for his masterpiece Once Upon a Time in America as other directors like Coppola (Godfather) and Scorsese (Goodfellas)
@someguy1098
@someguy1098 3 года назад
No, wrong. The reason for that OUATIA has not got the recognition is because it was brutally cut down with hours of screen-time by the producers for the american release. Not just that, the film (again, in the american release) was put into chronological order which made the film not make sense. The discussion that you are talking about is quite silly, since his movies ironically were a CRITIQUE on the usual Western-movies who treated women as ”symbols” instead of actual people. Have a great day, not trying to be rude or anything, but just wanted to explain your errors
@someguy1098
@someguy1098 3 года назад
@@Hnchmchl85 No, not really. I just explained why the movie has not got the recognition. The film, that was seen in its original form (the good version) in European countries got praised and got a 15 minutes standing ovation at the Cannes festival.

@@Hnchmchl85 okay then, you don’t like this movie and we like this movie. You finished? You’re gonna be a loser about it? Because that’s exactly what you do. You go around in its videos just because you want to hate on it. Can you go more silly than that? I don’t think so. So if you really don’t like anything about this movie (even though the score, cinematogrophy, the filmmaking style and the rawfulness shown in the gangster are one of the greatest ever, in my and many others opinion), which is your right, why won’t you leave and quit hating about it, because no one gives a damn about you wanting attention.

This movie treats rape as no big deal. One rape victim seems to have enjoyed the experience while the other was just a bit inconvenienced. The rapist is fairly nonchalant about it all.
@AdamMetwally
@AdamMetwally 3 года назад
Hi Unappreciated Treehouse, you're right that the rapist is nonchalant about his actions. Even the driver ignores Deborah's screams of pain and keeps driving until its way too late. Why does he wait so long to stop the car? I dont know. Maybe its a comment about how the Mafia were tolerated during the prohibition era and that's why they got away with so much nasty stuff? I dont know, but I want to try to defend the film: I dont think Leone made this movie to dismiss rape incidents. I think he is interested in portraying gunslingers as not romantic, and interested in offering insight on how criminals try to justify sexual violence. Two pieces of reasoning make me come to this conclusion: A) - Carol is heavily implied to have some masochistic tendencies. She's not a self-respecting woman like Deborah, and during the robbery she actively demands Noodles to hit her and "make it look real". There's a thrill to it for her. On the other hand, you have Deborah, who has completely rejected Noodles by the time of the dinner date. She's got aspirations to succeed and to make a good name for herself in America. She wants the American dream, and that means not getting involved with Noodles because he is a petty criminal who was sentenced to jail for 10 years. When Noodles rapes Deborah, she never forgives him and tries to enact revenge on him by fucking his best friend Max and giving birth to a son. Despite the incident which she hasnt forgotten, Deborah still manages to succeed in life. In the end she's won and has the career she wanted, meanwhile Noodles is some nobody smoking opium in some Chinese den. B)- All of Noodles' sexual experiences at this point have amounted to sex with Peggy for money and sex with Carol by force. But he always wanted Deborah. So Noodles having failed to buy sex with her by extravagantly spending money on a lavish dinner date for her, does the only other thing that has worked for him up to this point. He uses force. You then realize where Sergio Leone has taken you. The first rape explains the second. This is how a criminal has to justify his evil actions. Once Upon a Time in America is kind of like the bookend to the classic American gangster movies. We dont get anymore Godfathers, Bonnie and Clydes, or Untouchables after it. That naive cheeseball romanticism dies out of Hollywood and from then on its super cynical and Scorsese-like with bloodbaths and massacres.

@@AdamMetwally The portrayal of rape in this film as delightful for Carol or just a slight bother for Deborah is so far from plausible that it's beyond any rationalization you may offer. No over analyzation of the film can transform the plot from pointless to believable. The films clumsy attempt to convey a meaningful message fails from June 1, 1984 to the present.
@AdamMetwally
@AdamMetwally 2 года назад
@@unappreciatedtreehouse821 I'm not going to do any further over-analyzation or rationalization. It's just that you said Carol's rape was "so far from plausible" that it became unbelievable for you. Would you still call it implausible in light of the four points below? A) The 1930s were not a pretty time for women or for gender rights B) Sex workers have historically suffered a high incidence of sexual assault C) Carol's character is a masochistic prostitute, and she's directly the one who suggests the bank theft D) Of those who report their rape, around 5% also describe experiencing sexual arousal or pleasure Suspense of disbelief is not shared to the same degree in everyone, but can you see why some might have no trouble believing the events that take place in the film?
@unappreciatedtreehouse821
@unappreciatedtreehouse821 2 года назад
@@AdamMetwally I thought you weren't going to do any further over-analyzation or rationalization? I'm terribly sorry to disappoint you but my opinion hasn't changed. The plot, especially the treatment of rape is implausible, not believable and fails to convey a meaningful message. All of which render the movie pointless.
@bubabubu5395
@bubabubu5395 Год назад
@@unappreciatedtreehouse821 rape is portrait glamorously and Deborahs rape is romanticised. Sergio Leone said that noodles actions was from despair,love and respect. Their "love story" continues and we see noodles on the train station, then he is depressed,35 years later still in love with tears. Deborahs greets him, cares for him "oh noodles dont go in the evil Max's Party" 😅 Deborahs rape was romantic act for Sergio Leone and he was badly criticized and he hated it and never spoke about this scene ever again. Good for critics! Have a nice day

It's an epic in every sense of a word, and by the end, you wish it did not end. It's a tragic tale and the one that made me fall in love with cinema. Today, finally, I am seeing a 255-minute version (Extended Director's Cut version) in all its glory, excited to say the least.
