I would love to see the 6 hour version of this movie. It has been my favourite film since the very first time I saw it, probably in 1995, and I know it will always be my favourite film. Thank you for uploading.
The first version was more than 6 hours long (never released). The original Leone version was 4.5 hours long (also never released). The European version was about 3.5 hours long. And the US cinema version was something like 1.5 hours and a disaster (damn those producers to hell). Leone's daughters have been working for years to restore the 4.5 hours version, which premiered last year - yet, there are still 24 minutes missing due to problems with rights and ownership. Martin Scorcese has been supporting the process and is continuing to do so.
Actually, they had something like 8 to 10 hours of footage when they finished filming, and edited that down to about 6 hours and were thinking of cutting that into two 3 hour parts... But the production studio refused because of the failure of "1900" which failed commercially mainly due to the fact that it was in two parts, so they settled on one 4.5 hour long film which was sadly cut down to just short of 4 hours long for its showing at the Cannes film festival in 1984, where it was widely acclaimed. This 3.9 hour cut was Leone's decision, which was done to better appease the distributers. The movie became a disaster when these distributers had it cut at 2 hours and 19 minutes for theatres! Leone's children tried to screen a remastered version of the film at Cannes in its original run time (4.5 hours), but due to some legal complications only managed to show a 256 minute version, missing about 13 minutes, but is still the closest it has ever been to the original runtime that Leone wanted.
Well, 10 hours was the entire material, as I understand it. A bit much, maybe. I watched all the "deleted" scenes there are on youtube and they would not have made it into a better movie - I think. Some of the relations between the characters would have maybe been more obvious sooner, true, but I always liked the fact that there was a mystery about much of what was going on for much of the film. The "original" European version is a masterpiece which never ceases to amaze me. Best film ever.
Just saw the restored edition at the New York Film Festival. Amazing! I can't believe there's still another 14 minutes tied up due to rights issues. What are in THOSE scenes??
Me too. I adore this film but always thought there was something missing between the time of Noodles going away. I hated them using Yesterday song, spoiled the later part of the film for me because of that.
This scene was not cut out of the original movie. Sadly, Louise Fletcher passed away 12 weeks ago . . . But don’t worry, she was in the original and she did not wind up on the cutting room floor. . .
@@johnhallam4714 La scena del frisbee è sicuramente legata a qualcosa d'altro. E dovete sapere che non abbiamo il taglio di 6 ore voluto da Leone. Speriamo di non vederlo mai perche sarebbe un montaggio finto!
Leone was years ahead of his time. Imagine if Leone pitched this to Netflix and they said "you have free reign to edit and keep whichever content you like." An undisturbed 6 hour epic. However, would Netflix done this as a miniseries?
They would’ve demanded that it be in 4K and suitable for home TV viewing. I don’t think Lenoe would’ve ever picked up an offer from Netflix. So far none of the true Masters have
That's exactly what I'm thinking. I have seen Peter Jackson's They Shall not grow old, and there are some wonderful artists out there who can restore ancient footage in 4K, with colours and artificial frames. Just go to Denis Shiryaev's channel. So I think that in the hands of a skilled artist it shouldn't be rocket science to properly restore this film. And if the studio's aren't willing to do this, why don't fans reach out to some of these guys?
@Brendan Milburn WW1 footage in better condition? I highly doubt it. If you watch the behind the scenes of that documentary you can see to what extend they had to restore the footage, to the point that they had to create artificial frames. In the case of Once Upon a Time in America it's a matter of restoring the colours. We have set photo's and also different scenes from the film as reference material. Sure I'm not a huge fan of tampering with art. But if the movie was meant to be seen in full colour, you might as well try to replicate what it was like originally. It will most likely not be perfect, but it can be much better than what we have now. Sergio Leone didn't mean for the film to be seen in such a bad state. This may have been expensive in the past. But nowadays there is open source software, and some really talented non profit artists who can add colour to a black and white pucture. So I don't see a reason not to try. I'd do it myself if I had the time and skills to do so.
I love this movie....always have. This scene should have been included as it helps to explain some things making it a little easier to follow. What they should have done with this masterpiece is to make it a mini series and have every scene included.
I understand Scorsese and his team are trying to improve the quality of the restored scenes, to be inserted into the film...as you can see the quality of the restored scenes shown at Cannes last year is not that great...if the full restoration happens, there will almost certainly be a new Blu-ray and DVD release...like you, I'm waiting!
@@iampedro101 Thanks man. wanna hear the dumbest review In the world. This infuriates me ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7IJSALui1-g.html
what a fucking movie. nothing comes close to this masterpiece and i will be forever grateful that this movies was made and it reached me. shame that there arent others like this.
What a shame these editors did to this film! Not only did they cut important scenes that help the flow of the film but they cut out a scene with Louise Fletcher! After her passing this year, it feels more disrespectful because she truly was a great actress.
I really hope the full 4h 29m can be seen one day, not only that, I hope that Leone’s intended two part six hour film can be seen one day, if it exists.
Louise Fletcher? W.T.F.? they really butchered this movie! I got the DVD and I don't remember this scene at all! sucks how they cut up such a classic film.
in 84 or 85 I saw the movie in the theater. I remembered the killing of his two best friends in the Jewish restaurant it was a very bloody scene and crude finale. did anyone remember that or is only me? I bought the movie but it does not show you that part. they say that there is a 269 minutes movie in the store, I will try to buy it to have a complete version of this great movie. thanks
Experience Once Upon a Time In America the way Sergio Leone intended - The fully restored Extended Director’s Cut featuring 22 minutes of never-before-seen footage is available on Blu-ray™ & DVD September 30th 2014
@Mary Ann Lanzon it's on the extended cut which was released in 2014. It's definitely on eBay, also on sale for 10.99 grab a copy now before they go back upto 30-40$
Just watched the 250-minute extended version on DVD tonight. As a fan and admirer of Leone and his work, it was a real treat. When I first saw the film, it was with commercials and none of these extra scenes were included. When I first saw the film, I also wondered about the Frisbee and the garbage truck. Now, after watching the director's cut, I'm wondering about the car in the cemetery, and why they decided to leave that part out of the 230-minute cut.
Ok. I’m officially pissed. This scene is NOT in the version I just saw from Netflix. Any other scene I have missed? The heck I’m missing??? Yet the Netflix version is 3hrs and 50 mins. Almost 4 hours.
It's sad that America got a shitty version of it, and the were probably thinking that a 3 hour film would be too long for us Americans, like seriously, we watched The Godfather Part II, bro even though it was 3 hours, it was still a great movie, like why not give Once Upon A Time In America a chance.
I think the problem was how to make money and encourage people going to watch the movie... a 4 hours movie maybe could have dissuade people from going to see it, and furthermore it there would have been less showing due to the duration of the movie... thus means less money.. and money is everything (unfortunately).. sorry for my english
It would be nice if they processed the new footage properly so it doesn't suddenly (in the Extended Version) feel like going back to your old TV in the 1980s.
@@JaxenRossisback You're correct they don't have the correct footage (legally, I believe they have it but are fighting over rights). However, I was referring to the obvious quality difference with the inserted Extended parts. The colors are paler and it looks like DVD vs Blu Ray quality.
These scenes were cut from the original piece so it could be in an R rating (mostly a few rape scenes) and reduce the length of it by a bit (the 229 minute version used to be longer due to these restored scenes). In 2012 these scenes were restored and put on the movie so people could see the original piece without any major cutting. This version with the restored scenes aired at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
We saw it on video VHS rental UK circa 1989. Highly recommended by the local newsagent in Epsom. We were mesmorised by it. I'm a big film fan and can honestly say that it's my favourite film of all time. The music is sublime. Ennio Morricone's score is o beautiful.
what's going on around the 1:14 minute mark, I see DiNero walking towards her, his head jerks and he walks backwards, like something out of the Excorist?? Please help.......
I just saw the close to 4 hour version and I want a 6 hour version because this scene was not in the 4 hour version. I can understand cutting a film to get rid of the fat but maybe the 6 hour version was fat free and whatever we have gotten so far is just pieces of a far better film.
Once Upon a Time in America is one of my favorite movies. Although I'm quite pleased to have the opportunity to watch this deleted scene, I don't think it would have actually enhanced the plot. I think Sergio Leone's mistakes on this film were over-explaining certain parts of the plot and allowing things that should have been subtle nuances to become overly obvious. Although the US theatrical cuts were a travesty, a SLIGHTLY trimmed version of the film would have made it more modern and mysterious.
They have done a further restoration of the movie how leone intended it adding this scene and many others..Scorsese is behind the restoration they had a screening at last hers cannes film festival with deniro and the cast but I believe they decided to withdraw it as it needs more work.
do you know if they have restored the whole film yet,i know scorsese was working on it,if they have finished it will this new bluray be released in england?
Only if opium gives you prophetic insights into future technology. Cars, television etc. You could call a parable of sorts, but with hell of a lot of suspension of disbelief.
I don't know if it's true though, I only found the info of a 6 hour cut in the The Lost Media Archive section in the Fandom website, I don't if it's true though, you're gonna have to read it yourself.
I was uses to the European cut and just watched the 4 hour cut. You can clearly see the "restored" scenes. Ecause the color etc is completely off and it's like the contrast is set super high with super low gamma and high black levels. Anyway. I remember wat his movie years ago (it was already decades old by then) and it was one of my favorite movies ever. Just rewatched it (been years forgot so much) and it was sorta disappointing tbh. Some parts haven't aged well. Other than that it's a good movie. Just not as great as I remember. Also I Love long movies. Always hate thst mcoies are so short and believe movies should be around 4 hours as a standard. But by the end I started to get sorta bored (tbf I haven't slept well so I'm super tired)
I don't remember this in the film I saw ,,,is that nurse rachet or whatever she was called...men's films shouldn't have hussies in them, me ma used to say.. once the kissing starts,,,,,it's over,,,🤣🤣 good story, dead...
