My dad played me this song over 5 years ago without telling me its name n never once had it disappeared from my memory. Finally after all this time I found it.
'The main theme 'Once Upon a Time In America' is my favourite piece of music overall but the rendition in the middle of this piece is absolutely the best version, brings up the hairs on the back of my neck and a tear to the eye every time. Nobody composes music better than Morricone for me.
A few years ago, I was lucky enough to act in a short film, a western, and we filmed in Almeria, where many, many spaghetti westerns were filmed, including some of Leone's. We had some down time on the last day, and I was chilling in one of the studios. They had spent all the time not filming blasting Morricone music throughout the studio. At one point, I was just sitting on a wooden chair outside the main saloon, and this masterpiece came on. I sat there, thinking about the amazing experience I had just had, and that it was coming to an end, and I broke down. I was blessed to see the Maestro live three times. The first time, the orchestra played this, and I broke down again. I've broken down every time since.
Watched it from 11 pm to 4am what an unforgettable piece of music. Truly one that will be implanted in my memory. It reminds me of Sergio's western films even the 4 hour long film felt like a proper send off to one of cinemas most under appreciated directors working during their time... What an impactful filmmaker!
when I hear this music, it makes me sad because Sergio Leone needed to be recognized at the Oscars for this wonderful movie. Even Ennio Morricone should have been nominated for best score.

Not too many composes DARE to use a pan flute in a film. Not because the composer is standing on some kind of principal, but because they're only a handful of pan flute players in the world as good as the player in this film! I believe this is Zamfir!
You're right, Vic ! The Pan flute part of the "Once Upon a Time in America" soundtrack is performed by the greatest ever Pan flute Maestro, the Romanian Gheorghe Zamfir. Many years ago, in a TV interview, Zamfir told how he was asked by Ennio Morricone to perform the pieces "Childhood Memories" and "Cockeye's Song" (as parts of the movie soundtrack) which were purposely composed to be performed by him. However, Zamfir's first appearance as soloist interpreter in a movie soundtrack was in the 1972 French movie "Le grand blond avec une chaussure noire" (The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe), whose soundtrack became a worldwide hit and, respectively, its 1974 sequel "Le Retour du Grand Blond" (The Return of the Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe). Zamfir's Pan flute music was also successfully used to similar effect in Peter Weir's 1975 Australian movie "Picnic at Hanging Rock", in the Morrocan films "La guerre du pétrole n'aura pas lieu" (1975) and "Bodas de Sangre" (1977), in the 1979 Australian miniseries "Golden Soak" ("The Lonely Shepherd" was used as the theme), in the film "The Karate Kid" (1984), in the Japanese animation film "Only Yesterday" (1991) and in Quentin Tarantino's film "Kill Bill: Volume 1" (2003).
It is incredible how there are people so good at what they do, this song accompanies us throughout the film, for me it marks the moments of change in the characters and the plot, there are very talented people in the world, cinema is a of the most beautiful things that exist, I have discovered things and felt things that I have never imagined, I am just a simple spectator...
ennio's a fuckin class. this movie's OST is my all time fav OST from Ennio the greatest. although its not easy to choose. so many great compositions from the greatest composer
