I actually think the idea that the Dark One's all had the same look was an add on. I don't think Zoso had that look as the Dark One when we first saw him. They added that later when they brought him back. I'd have to go back and check to be sure though. I always assumed that the Dark Ones appearance was based on not only the darkness growing in them(Rumple didn't look like that at first) but also their OWN perception of that darkness. That is until they brought Zoso back. It still remains my head cannon however because I never liked that they went the direction of them all looking the same. Especially because I thought Zoso's make-up looked less subtle and leagues worse than Rumple's. Meanwhile I liked that Emma's looked was unique to her. This also neatly explains Zelena turning green if powerful magic beings can subconsciously change their own appearance based on how they FEEL about themselves. Whatever comes in the future or not on the topic I won't touch with a ten foot pole because spoilers.

@@xkindredxsoulsxxx4195 Hmm... I think Zoso was scaly when Rumple killed him? Yeah, I checked, he was. You can look it up here. He got stabbed, he fell, his face showed and there was a small moment where his face and eyes changed, he became normal and said his last words. They just didn't waste money and time on makeup for a few seconds and did CGI.

@@xkindredxsoulsxxx4195 He's greyish there, with sparkles or is that like scales? and yellow eyes. Looks pretty much like Rumple in the same episode.

@@nadiadare7226 Yeah, I went back and rewatched that scene myself too. It's there but barely and briefly. They didn't even bother using it in the shots where you see his face, but not clearly. I can see why I missed/forgot about it. It's not a great affect either, but it's brief and possibly a better match for Rumple. When they bring him back it's a better affect, but I feel like less of a match for Rumple although they are clearly going for that. More importantly it is not nearly as nuanced or nice an affect as Rumple's is. I'm sure that if they use that affect again it will likely not be any better. If they were going to use the same look for all the Dark One's it should have had some varience and nuance to the individual while still being the same general look. Unfortunately that takes time and artistry they may not be willing to devote to someone we will barely see. Personally I would still prefer if they had not even tried to match the Dark One's look, especially as they don't seem to with Emma. One could argue that she is also the Savior and therefore a special case I suppose, but it still feels inconsistent. Giving them their own look would have been a bit more work, but not too difficult had they kept it subtle and avoided the appearance of inconsistency. It would also fit nicely with my head cannon that they are doing it to themselves. I know it's my own head cannon, but I refuse to give up on it as I'm stubborn and again it nicely explains Zelena going green when that doesn't seem to happen to anyone else.

@@nadiadare7226 As for your point of the make up emphasizing how sad and boring Emma's face gets over time I can't say you're wrong. What I can say is that I think it's what they were going for because of what is going on with her character at the time and as such it doesn't bother me. In fact her becoming more severe and cold and sad looking actually fits with my whole they're doing it to themselves because of how they feel inside thing. I can't go into much detail in this video because it's early for that, but I think it's clear that she is feeling pretty cold and disconnected right now. She sort of comes off here even as empty of emotions that aren't anger and maybe if you look close sadness. It seems to fit for me. I would even argue that the acting is changing her face more than the make up.

Yea I agree it's annoying
