This single 2x4 board saved me $400! I was able to turn this 2x4 into a woodworking project that sells for nearly $400 on Etsy! 🤯 This is a great beginner woodworking project.

My wife saw a product on Etsy for plants using pipes and wood for floating shelves. They wanted 150 each. She says can you build this? 89 bucks later I built 4 shelves. Never did it before but I looked at the pictures and figured it out. My point is, save money and do it yourself, if you can. Love your build content as well as all your other content, Matt!

I was wondering if you could make a video showing how you power all your tools. Like how many 240v outlets you have, any extension cords you use and how they are organized out of the way, or any tools that are basically permanent due to cord length, etc. I can't seem to find much demonstration on this. Yes I know each situation is different but it would be nice to see how other people run power to their tools for inspiration. Thank you for all that you provide the community. Your videos have helped me out a lot and I appreciate it.

Nice build! I had gotten some 2X red oak, real cheap. My wife saw these on social media and asked if I could make these. I made two towel holders and one smaller (using 1X) one for wash cloths. I was patting myself on the back after completion and upper management loved them.

Couple tips: My favorite method of splitting a 2x4 to get the same width as the 1.5" thickness is to first set the fence to split it exactly in half, then set the fence to 1.5" (often using the thickness of the board to set it), put the cut edge to the fence and cut off whatever of the rounded edge. There might be a slight bend at the edge, but this is usually hidden by my sanding to ease the edge, so it works out. The second tip is to not use a 2x4 to get 2x2s, but instead use wider stock like a 2x8. There's not as many knot holes, and it's not as wonky with twisting and warping, because it has to be cut from a thicker (and therefore more stable) tree, or at least not at close to the edge of a larger tree. The cost isn't that much greater, and you end up with much straighter towel bars -- especially if you're gonna be charging a couple hundred bucks for them! :)
@garrybray7173
@garrybray7173 Месяц назад
I agree with you but I must say, the 2x4's in his area look better than the ones in my area. I think his is yellow pine. My area has twisted up clearer pine.

The cat that pretty much lives upstairs in me and the wife's bedroom loves laying on towels. Sadly our bathroom upstairs, we remodeled the extra space in our upstairs so our bedroom is the whole top floor of our house, is the size of a spare bathroom so we use a shelf for our towels. I soon as I check 10-42 in the morning I'm heading home, changing, going to Lowe's and making a few of these for our bathroom. The wife will finally stop having to yell at the cat for laying on her fresh towels lol.

My building started when the wife said "I really like this $2000 entry way table" that was at a local shop. I smarted off and said I can build something better than that if you let me buy a few tools. My first woodworking project started with an entry table built out of Walnut with a live edge top. I spent about $600 on materials (and had leftover walnut). I bought a Dewalt 735X planer, a track saw (yea...could have done without but hey I had a $2k budget), a doweling jig, some pipe clamps, a few other tools (already had a table saw) and a bunch of labor hours and it was all done. I came in right under $2K excluding labor. but I learned a lot and had fun too so I don't really count the labor hours. LOL. The wife loves the table and has tons of photos on her phone to prove it. Moral of the story, that $600 in material saved me enough to buy a bunch of tools. 🙂

My problem is when I think like a customer I ask myself "what would I do before buying this item from someone else?" So I go search online and find these items on amazon/ebay etc for $20-$30 or people on fb market place fighting each other in price until it's literally pointless to even make it for myself, much less to try and sell.

Yes, as I have often heard since my childhood: Money focuses the mind! I've tinkered in my wee workshop for years, and I've had the same issues with material cost versus end product price. I have to admit, it took me a while to graduate from 'busy fool' to someone who values their own time and skill set. I was recently quoted £5,600 to have the exterior of my house painted. Well, like your good self, I decided to make the time to do it myself. I just loaded an Audible book and set to it. Not really in my comfort zone at the top of a ladder, but with the aid of an extension pole, was able to get the job done over the course of a couple of weekends. Whilst it cost considerably more than eight dollars, I can safely report that I was able to shave a zero off the price with ease.

I would like to offer that it's okay to flip that cut if it helps to achieve a fit up. So maybe you ripped a board and match it again - sometimes it works great. Sometimes it flexes like crazy after the cut. Sometimes that opposing flex is a good thing once it's glued and fastened. Depends on what you're doing or trying to achieve!

Howdy Mr. 731... It's been awhile since I've commented. I've switched to watching YT channels from my phone to a TV that I've got in my shop and well, I'm not gonna sit there using the remote and scroll around letter by letter to comment. BUT...after watching this video, I just HAD HAD HAD to load it up on my phone to make a comment, LOL. That comment..... I started laughing HARD and loud when you told the Mrs...."Just order a few on Etsy". Then she comes back..."Are you sure? They're $200 each"?? """UMMM, NO...I'll go build you some right now"!!!!! That was FREAKING hilarious!!!! 😅😅 I think we all are like that. I can build it BETTER and CHEAPER...........Eventually 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Might take me a week but us Woodworkers.....Man o Man.....We cannot STAND paying "Woodworkers" prices on things we KNOW we can do ourselves. It's almost a SIN to do so. And if we do buy something....We critique the ever living POOP out of it. This is crap, that's done wrong. Here's a blemish, there's a crack. This edge is loose. SEND IT BACK!!!! We'll actually lose sleep over it. That's why your comment was soooo funny. Cause it's true. $200 for a Towel Rack....I don't Freakin think so. Loved the Video Mr. Buttons 😊

I’m gonna build a bunch of these and sell them for $150 each on Etsy. Undercutting ftw

Another thing that may cause us to under price our items is what seems to be too much competition to do otherwise. It happens to me. However, we need to keep in mind that while the competition may number in the thousands, populations can number in the millions and we live in an age when most everyone has access to the global market. You don't need, nor would you probably want, all of the business. You just need your niche.

cost of materials, tools, blades, bits, sandpaper, finish, time ect

The other part about pricing is besides skills, the tools required to do such work. Yes the material is a few dollars and a few hours time so $195 seem excessive. But you need to take into account the tools required to make it if the consumer has none. On some of my turnings yes I have only $5 of material and a few hours of work in it. Why do I sell it for $100+. To make this you need a lathe, turning tools, turning accessories, etc. For a mere $1000.00 in tools later you can make your own and "save" that $100 cost. Your work is not typically marketed to other makers, but rather those that do not have the skills or tools to make the item that they need/want.

In addition, when you are selling, you need to pay a commission to the platform (Etsy), collect sales tax, and pay for shipping, account for possible returns. It all adds up, but may be not up to 200 bucks

I know you are a professional and can do these projects faster than we mere mortals, but how many hours did you have it those two pieces? I would assume if you can do it in 4, I need to allow myself 8 before I get frustrated and I will probably have it done in 6..

Do some of the plans you offer go through Spring as a selling point?

Some do go through Spring because it connects to the channel, but it's best just to buy them through my website because I have all of them there. On spring there's only a limited amount.
