While I love the idea of universal adapters, in my experience, the electrical sockets in a lot of older European hotels are loose and won't support the weight of a universal adapter. When I've used them in the past, I'd often have to place something underneath the adapter to hold up and stabilize the adapter. I usually don't have that issue with a small, region specific adapter.

100% agree. Personally I use the Road Warrior adaptor. It’s very lightweight compared to typical offerings, and covers any conceivable plug configuration. It’s not a converter, but all my travel gear is dual voltage anyway. The BIGGEST tip I have is to bring a short 3 foot extension cord as well. Your single outlet converter just became a three outlet US plug, it makes using those inconveniently placed plugs easier, and it places the bulk of the weight of items away from the plug itself so no worries about the plug wiggling loose. I’m a big hiker, so this is a game changer given access to free plugs at campgrounds, hostels, etc are already hard enough to find.

I have the donut ring adapter. 3ft. cord 3 plug outlets and 3 USB. I power medical device and charge all electronics. Especially good for Hostels and ships where outlets are at a premium.

THANK YOU for all your tips and tricks. Had an amazing time...and enough of everything!!!

Over the years I have developed a "list". I use it to pack, put it in the bag and use it as an inventory when I pack to come home. Since I started using it I haven't forgotten anything (like meds) that could put a kink in the trip, except that trip my spouse forgot to put my bag in the trunk😅.

Packable day pack is a must. The right ones weigh basically nothing, pack down tiny, and let you leave your travel pack on the hotel while you explore town. I always try to dress like locals when I foreign travel (only works on Europe lol) and being able to leave my travel pack when I’m out on the town in my experience means you don’t get treated like a tourist. Just returned from a 18 day Euro trip and I had MUCH more pleasant interactions than my friends who were dressed like typical Americans, ie ball caps, sneakers, and blue jeans

I really like the Brita insulated filter water bottle. it has all the features as the Owala that you recommend plus the water filter. The Brita filters the water and removes the chlorine, taste and odor of the water. In some countries and states in the US the water can have rather odd tasting water. I used this bottle to travel all through Scotland, recently. It is wonderful and I highly recommend.

Skip the packing cubes! I buy different size “vacuum” bags that do not need a vacuum to use. There are roll-up kinds that reduce your contents volume significantly. I traveled with a Rick Steve’s back pack for 2 weeks in Europe a few times & this works best. A rubber braided “rope” to hang laundry to dry is also a must. i wash in the room sink shirts, socks, etc.. Buy zero cotton shirts & they dry fast with minimal wrinkles.

The Montbell Versalite is the best ultralight rain shell on the market hands down. 6.4 oz in men’s US size medium. Packs down to a roughly 8”x2” size. Has armpit zips, crucial to avoid the sauna effect. Plus it’s made of actual gore-tex which outperforms EVERY other waterproof membrane in my experience. Pair it with a lightweight down puffer jacket and the two together will easily keep you comfortable down to freezing with any degree of physical activity
@WisGuy4
@WisGuy4 11 месяцев назад
I have found that Gore-Tex breathes about as well as a plastic garbage bag. Additionally, they have had such predatory marketing schemes to try to coerce manufacturers into using their products exclusively that it’s not a company I want to support.
@blakew5672
@blakew5672 11 месяцев назад
@@WisGuy4 Was unaware about them pressuring companies, seems like a standard business practice though, but every waterproofing membrane I’ve tried breathes like a plastic bag. Goretex is the one offering that’s I’ve found consistently performs as far as waterproofing is concerned. Heat build up is a wash between all the major offerings and not something I consider. Not to mention Goretex has a lifetime guarantee on any product that uses their membrane.

@@bradavon just came from a trip using compression packing cubes. I'll stick to vacuum seal plastic bags for clothes - they compress way better. The compression packing cubes didn't really save much space for me. They were better for compartmentalising other things like food and medicine - in gist, as packing cubes rather than compression packing cubes. The good thing is that since they were "compression", I had slight control over the size ie. whether to expand or zip down the cubes. I do wonder if a stretchable cube / bag might be as effective.

Great content as always. I have never seen the value of a water bottle. I'm a fan of the Minaal Daily 3.0, which ditched an external water bottle pocket. I tried lugging a water bottle for 3 weeks in Asia with an Osprey Sojourn 45L carry on roller backpack and a backpack that fit under the airplane seat, and resolved the water bottle's cost in volume, mass, and inconvenience outweighed any benefit in utility. To each his own. I know there are different styles of travel. The water bottle's an easy omission for me. Many things can take its place.

Love the one bag travel concept - but I will say this: When I packed with the compression cubes recommended (Tripped) - my clothes were wrinkled, badly! It's a great theory, and it explains why you bring wrinkle releaser. In our case, our condo had a washer & dryer (add wet wash cloth to clothes in dryer and voila! No wrinkles!). Great advice, but watch those compression cubes! I try to OBT all the time, but unfortunately my wife doesn't share the same initiative. Every single bag we own will be packed. *sigh* Good luck out there! Safe travels!

Do you roll or fold your clothes? I use packing cubes, but not the compression version. Compression cubes make precious little difference, and only smash down the outer edges, they realistically don’t save that much space. My personal experience, if you tightly roll the clothes, smoothing out wrinkles as you do they tend to come out mostly wrinkle free. Any wrinkles are quickly fixed by hanging them in the bathroom as you take a hot shower in the hotel
@TheRudymentryGuide
@TheRudymentryGuide 11 месяцев назад
@@blakew5672 Great question! I rolled my clothes in one compression cube, and folded in another - both looked crazy wrinkled. NOW, that said, I used packing cubes for my trip to Colombia in February, and rolled my clothes - came out great, but I cheated - I used tech material for my polos. I did order 2 more sets of compression cubes (linked from @awaytogether) so I could use them in my other duties. I agree with the hotel (and have done that a few times in my professional travels). It works so well. I'm just not as impressed with the compression cubes. Concept seems great, but delivery... not so much. Especially for "People of size" - I'll say it, I like ice cream and I can't deny it. So anyway, back to the drawing board, and hopefully between the compression cubes and a new carry on, maybe I can get a travel solution. Looking at a Nanuk 935 for a carry on. I know, something different!

But *WHY* do I need a water bottle if bottled water is _readily_ available along my route and at my destination? Hiking through the countryside? No arguments; bring that bottle! But...NYC? Dude, any street corner that doesn’t have a bodega will have a Starbucks or a fast food restaurant. _Something_ will be available.

I travel internationally for 2-3 months at a time. I use the same carry on suitcase and smallish back pack.What do you do about 2 month worth of contact solution, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, toothpaste, etc? I can limit my clothes and shoes easily by getting a washer in each place. This time the first month is on a cruise so can’t buy these essentials there! Then after a month in Buenos Aires! I usually can do it in one suitcase but wanted some input about what you do? I have to check the carry on suitcase because of the size of these bottles!

I thought I read where contact lens solutions were considered medical and therefore not part of the quart size liquids bag but need to be declared at security as medical. Double check this with TSA

Shampoo, conditioner and shaving cream can be purchased in bar form instead of liquid. Toothpaste comes in tablet form instead of paste. Not sure about contact solution but if it's 'medical' as stated above, problem solved.

While I’ve used merino wool shirts and recognize their antibacterial properties, IMHO I’ve found them just too thin and fragile for extensive travel. I just find them overrated. For the high price point I expect better durability. .
