One of my neighbours come into the workshop a little while ago and asked if I would be able to make them a wooden birdbath for their front yard. I’d never made a birdbath before so thought this would be an interesting challenge. I picked a piece of Australian Ironbark to make it from. It’s hard and durable and somewhat resistant to termites. The wood I used is very heavy, this piece must have weighed at least 20 kilos. I had to trim it a few times to get it to fit on the lathe. There were also a few big cracks that I have filled with oakfieldclear.com new product “Resin Next”. This is also what I have used to seal the bottom of the birdbath.
My neighbour left the design up to me. I went for a rustic look, keeping some of the natural shape of the timber and leaving a rim around the bath for the birds to sit on. During the turning, as you will have seen I had a bad catch with my round nosed scraper. This catch has snapped the handle and broke the tool. I wasn’t injured when this happened, it just scared the crap out of me.
Enjoy the video.
It will be available through my website sdfwoodworks.com.au
